Previous issue date: 2008 / This work addresses the issue of representation of virtuous characters in the novels of the nineteenth century Europe, from the perspective of moral criticism and history of ideas. As contextualization, are considered the function of moral criticism, the discussion form versus content in literature, the concept of moral imagination, the history of the concept of virtue and the construction of virtuous characters in the novels of eighteenth century authors like Prévost, Richardson and Marquis de Sade. In a more detailed study, are presented three novels of the nineteenth century with virtuous characters that are considered problematic by criticism: Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, Honoré de Balzac’s Old Goriot, and Fedor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot. / Este trabalho aborda o problema da representação de personagens virtuosas nos romances europeus do século XIX, sob a perspectiva da crítica moral e da história das idéias.
