Tracz / This document was submitted to the Graduate School of Kansas State University as a partial requirement for the Master’s of Music Education degree. It contains the historical, theoretical, performance, and rehearsal consideration, for each of the three pieces that were performed on the Graduate Student Conducting Recital on Wednesday, March 12, 2010. Selections performed on the recital included in the document’s analysis portion include First Suite in E Flat by Gustav Holst, Japanese Overture by Ney Rosauro, and Inferno by Daniel Bukvich. The analysis format for this report is based on the Blocker/Miles Unit Study technique found in the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series, as well as the Tracz concept of macro-micro score analysis. The performances of the Kansas State University Wind Ensemble served as the basis for the technical, musical, and stylistic evaluations and analysis.

Master of Music / Department of Music / Kurt Gartner / This is a report intended for musicians and scholars who seek to enhance their understanding of any number of the following compositions: Prelúdio No. 1 Mi Menor (E Minor), op. 11 by Ney Rosauro, Prelúdio No. 2 la maior (A minor) by Ney Rosauro, Rotation IV by Eric Sammut, Water Falls for a Desert by Greg Coffey, Strands of Time by Brian Blume, Surface Tension by Dave Hollinden, bitsmoke by Casey Farina. Each work has been analyzed examined in accordance with Jan LaRue’s Guidelines For Style Analysis. For some compositions including only relative-pitch instruments, analysis of harmony has been omitted. For all compositions, the author has added notable performance considerations, essential technical and interpretive considerations in accord with LaRue’s guidelines. Therefore, the approach taken in analytical categories of this document can be exhibited as Sound, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Growth, and Performance.

La siguiente investigación consiste en un análisis musical, interpretativo y compositivo de una obra que fue interpretada por el autor en su recital de titulación de la Especialidad de Música con mención en percusión de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Se trata del Preludio Nro.3 en Do Mayor, una pieza para marimba a 4 baquetas compuesta por Ney Rosauro, un gran referente de la percusión en Latinoamérica y el mundo. Este trabajo aborda temas de análisis musical teórico, técnica e interpretación. La importancia de esta tesis se resume en el trabajo que realiza el músico al momento de estudiar, analizar y ensayar una obra para un recital. Por ese motivo, se han revisado aspectos importantes del análisis musical, de la técnica e interpretación, así como la relación que existe entre la obra y el intérprete. Este preludio nos demuestra que muchos aspectos importantes son aplicados en el aprendizaje del instrumento: el dominio del tempo, la solidez del sonido, así como las rotaciones de baquetas en intervalos cortos y amplios. Todo esto hace de la pieza una obra idónea para el análisis musical desde un punto de vista técnico e interpretativo de la marimba. El objetivo de esta tesis es contribuir a la literatura referida al análisis de este tipo de obras musicales, sobre todo para instrumentos de percusión, la cual no es muy abundante.
