Gravity studies over West Antarctica

This thesis describes the results of new analysis of gravity studies over West Antarctica. Set on the Siple Coast, an airborne geophysical survey was flown between 1994 and 1997 that covered the trunk of Bindschadler Ice Stream and the up-stream areas, including Whitmore Accommodation Zone and Byrd Subglacial Basin. The new gravity reduction methodology removed vertical and horizontal accelerations, the Eötvös effect, and the theoretical gravity; unlike previous analyses, this reduction did not level individual lines, preserving the high frequency data and avoiding introduction of new errors. This reduction provided the free-air gravity disturbance over the area, which was then leveled and registered by the more regional extensive GOCE satellite gravity. The processing and reduction of the data improved the high frequency signal over previous work on the data, giving better definition of small scale, short wavelength features, which works well with satellite gravity data that emphasizes the large scale, long wavelength features. The leveled free-air gravity was then processed with a FORTRAN 90 program that calculates the Bouguer disturbance based on the free-air gravity and the topography. The topography was gathered concurrently with the gravity with ice penetrating radar during the airborne survey. The Bouguer disturbances provide a crustal model of the area. The final Bouguer disturbance was also corrected for the ice above sea level, which was calculated with a simple Bouguer slab correction. Finally, a power spectrum analysis was run on a profile in the Bouguer gravity disturbance in order to complete a spectral analysis. The spectral analysis provides crustal density boundaries for a density anomaly near the surface, a mid-crustal anomaly, and the Moho boundary. The improved the high frequency content of the data allows spectral analysis down to 4 km. The differing crustal thickness from spectral analysis also shows the character and extent of the West Antarctic Rift System, the northern flank of which extends out from Marie Byrd Land and into the survey area. Bindschadler Ice Stream is located on the WARS rift floor and MacAyeal Ice Stream sits on the rift flank. / text

Ice-ocean interactions beneath the north-western Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Basal melting of ice shelves is causing accelerating mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet, yet the oceanographic processes which drive this are rarely observed. This thesis uses new observations from phase sensitive radar and moored oceanographic instruments to describe the processes which drive rapid basal melting of the north-western Ross Ice Shelf. Oceanographic conditions at the mooring site are strongly influenced by the neighbouring Ross Sea Polynya. High Salinity Shelf Water fills the lower water column continuously, but during summer a southward flow ventilates the cavity bringing Antarctic Surface Water (AASW) to the site. Tides account for half of the flow speed variance, and low frequency variability is influenced by local winds, and eddies associated with sea ice production in the polynya. Four years of basal melt rate observations show a mean melt rate of 1.8 m y$^{-1}$ at the mooring site and a strong seasonal cycle driven principally by water temperature variations. Radar observations show that melt rates vary rapidly and continuously in response to flow speed variability, and rapid melting occurs only when flow speeds are high. Radar observations of melt rates from 78 sites on the Ross and McMurdo ice shelves show an area-averaged annual-mean basal melt rate of 1.35 m y$^{-1}$, implying a net basal mass loss of 9.6 Gt y$^{-1}$ from the region. Melt rates are highest near the ice front where annual-mean and short-term summer rates reached 7.7 m y$^{-1}$ and 53 m y$^{-1}$, respectively. The seasonal and spatial variations in melt rate are consistent with melting driven by the summer inflow of AASW. Observations of boundary layer water temperature, flow speed and melt rates indicate that melt rates scale linearly with current speed, but sub-linearly with temperature in the outer boundary layer, possibly due to the stabilising effects of melt water input. Existing melt rate parameterisations which account for flow speed can be tuned to match the observations when thermal driving is low, but overestimate melt rates at higher temperatures, implying the need for further refinements to the models.

Les questions que se pose le glaciologue peuvent souvent être identifiées à des problèmes inverses. C'est ce qui est illustré dans ce travail à travers trois exemples: * Reconstruction des températures du passé : nous essayons de combiner l'information donnée par la composition isotopique de la glace et le profil de température mesuré à Vostok (Antarctique). Cette approche suggère que le profil de température ne permet pas de donner de meilleure estimation de la température du dernier stade glaciaire à Vostok que le thermomètre isotopique classique. * Reconstruction de la composition de l'atmosphère du passé: lors de la transformation de la neige en glace, des bulles d'air de composition voisine de celle de l'atmosphère sont emprisonnées dans la porosité de la glace. Différents processus naturels peuvent altérer la composition de la bulle et l'interprétation des mesures n'est pas immédiate. Nous proposons ici une méthode de déconvolution du signal atmosphérique prenant en compte les phénomènes de diffusion et de gravitation dans le névé polaire. Nous appliquons ensuite cette méthode à l'interprétation des mesures de méthane, CFCs et rapport isotopique du méthane dans le névé et la glace. * Reconstruction des propriétés rhéologiques de la glace à grande échelle : les iceshelves (plates-formes de glace flottantes) constituent avec les ice-streams (fleuves de glace) les éléments dynamiques de la calotte Antarctique. Leur rhéologie est un paramètre important à prendre en compte pour prédire l'évolution de la géométrie de la calotte Antarctique. Nous montrons comment retrouver ce paramètre critique à partir d'un modèle d'écoulement et de mesures de terrain, puis nous fournissons une carte de viscosité apparente du Ross Ice Shelf (Antarctique de l'Ouest). Les techniques d'inversion décrites dans ce travail sont classiques dans de nombreux domaines de la géophysique, mais elles sont peu connues en glaciologie. En les appliquant sous une forme simplifiée, nous nous sommes efforcés de montrer ce qu'elles peuvent apporter à la glaciologie et quelles sont leurs limites.

Double dating detrital zircons in till from the Ross Embayment, Antarctica

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / U/Pb and (U-Th)/He (ZHe) dating of detrital zircons from glacial till samples in the Ross Embayment, Antarctica records cooling after the Ross/Pan-African orogeny (450-625 Ma) followed by a mid-Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous heating event in the Beacon basin. Zircons were extracted from till samples from heads of major outlet glaciers in East Antarctica, one sample at the mouth of Scott Glacier, and from beneath three West Antarctic ice streams. The Ross/Pan-African U/Pb population is ubiquitous in these Antarctic tills and many Beacon Supergroup sandstones, thus 83 grains were analyzed for ZHe to subdivide this population. Two ZHe age populations are evident in East Antarctic tills, with 64% of grains 115-200 Ma and 35% between 200-650 Ma. The older population is interpreted to be associated with the Ross/Pan-African orogeny including cooling of the Granite Harbour Intrusives and/or exhumation of the older basement rocks to form the Kukri Peneplain. The lag time between zircon U/Pb, ZHe and 40Ar/39Ar ages from K-bearing minerals show cooling over 200 My. Grains in East Antarctic tills with a ZHe age of 115-200 Ma likely reflects regional heating following the breakup of Gondwana from the Ferrar dolerite intrusions, subsidence within the rift basin, and a higher geothermal gradient. Subsequent cooling and/or exhumation of the Transantarctic Mountains brought grains below the closure temperature over a span of 80 My. This population may also provide a Beacon Supergroup signature as most of the tills with this age are adjacent to nunataks mapped as Beacon Supergroup and contain an abundance of vi Beacon pebbles within the moraine. Nine zircons grains from three Beacon Supergroup sandstones collected from moraines across the Transantarctic Mountains yield ages from 125-180 Ma. West Antarctic tills contain a range of ZHe ages from 75-450 Ma reflecting the diverse provenance of basin fill from East Antarctica and Marie Byrd Land. ZHe and U/Pb ages <105 Ma appear to be distinctive of West Antarctic tills. The combination of U/Pb, ZHe and 40Ar/39Ar analyses demonstrates that these techniques can be used to better constrain the tectonic evolution and cooling of the inaccessible subglacial source terrains beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
