Evaluation of narrow corn (Zea mays L.) production and management in Mississippi and management of glufosinate herbicide applications on Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) control in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)Williams, John Joseph 30 April 2021 (has links)
Narrow row corn production has gained interest in the Mid-South region over the last several years. This narrow row spacing interest has been inspired by increase of soybean grain yield from narrow rows. Therefore, production practices were evaluated for proper management of narrow row corn production. Additionally, the management of glyphosate- and potentially auxin-resistant weeds place pressure on other POST chemistries. Therefore, optimizing glufosinate applications are essential for control of Palmer amaranth. The objectives of this research were four-fold: 1) evaluate the phenotypic and grain yield responses of narrow row corn production under irrigated conditions, 2) test corn hybrids for their response to increased plant population in a narrow row configuration in rainfed environments, 3) assess sidedress nitrogen fertilizer practices in narrow row corn production systems, and 4) further investigate glufosinate management for POST control of Palmer amaranth. The results of this research suggest few phenotypic changes by utilizing narrow rows in corn, but most importantly, a 0.7 Mg ha-1 increase in grain yield across all plant populations. Agronomic optimum plant populations for both irrigated and non-irrigated environments ranged from 101-120 thousand plants ha-1 with hybrids varying in their response to increased plant population. Additionally, sidedress nitrogen application methods of knife-in UAN vs. broadcasting treated urea responded similarly with respect to grain yield. Agronomic and economic optimum nitrogen rate would vary significantly by site. Regarding glufosinate management, smaller droplet sizes provided the greatest control of Palmer amaranth. In conclusion, these data suggest that narrow row corn production is a viable strategy to increase corn grain yield and seeding rates should be adjusted dependent on the corn hybrid of choice. Also, controlling Palmer amaranth in Dundee, MS with glufosinate was best utilizing smaller droplet sizes.

Systematic optimization of yield-enhancing applications in soybeansHaverkamp, Bryson January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Agronomy / Kraig Roozeboom / High soybean [Glycine max.] commodity prices in recent years have led to an increase in use of yield enhancing and protecting products. These products need to be evaluated to determine if the use of multiple inputs has a positive impact on yield and how these inputs interact with agronomic practices. The objectives of this study were to evaluate products individually and collectively in input systems, examine interactions between varieties and input systems (IS), seeding rates (SR) and IS, and row spacing (RS) and IS. Field experiments were conducted at high-yielding locations in Kansas and Minnesota in 2012 to 2014 to meet these objectives. Sixteen treatments consisting of individual inputs and inputs combined in systems were evaluated in one experiment. A second experiment evaluated the variety by IS interaction by constructing 18 treatments from a factorial combination of six glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] resistant varieties and three IS’s: untreated control (UTC), SOYA (combination of possible yield-enhancing products representative of those currently being marketed), and SOYA minus foliar fungicide (SOYA – foliar F). A third experiment evaluated the SR by IS interaction by constructing 12 treatments from a factorial arrangement of six SR’s and two IS’s: UTC and SOYA. A fourth experiment evaluated the RS by IS interaction by constructing 12 treatments from a factorial arrangement of three RS’s and four IS’s: UTC, fungicide and insecticide seed treatment plus foliar fungicide (STFF), SOYA, and SOYA – foliar F. Very few interactions between IS and agronomic practices were detected in any of the experiments. Varieties had an effect on multiple growth parameters but yield differences were marginal; linear-plateau and non-linear models found that seeding rates that maximized yield in this study were similar to University recommendations; and in general, narrow rows produced the greatest yields. The use of inputs and IS’s typically increased seed mass and yield above the UTC across all experiments. However, given current costs and soybean prices, yield response to IS’s was not great enough to cover the additional costs. Overall, it appears producers would be better served by focusing on agronomic practices rather than implementing input systems.

A field experiment was conducted from September 10 to April 10/2008 in three different environments with different height, in Goioerê, Toledo and Cascavel localized in the west of Parana State. The design utilized was of randomized blocks into subdivided parcels. The spacing were placed in the main parcel and the population density and hybrids in sub parcels in a factorial schema. Biometric variables such as plant height, height of insertion of the first spike and diameter of stem and the components of production, number of rows, number of grains per spike, mass of grains per spike, the mass spike and productivity, were evaluated. Was no effect of row spacing, obtaining the maximum grain yield with the spacing of 0.57 m between rows, regardless of location. There was positive interaction between the environmental effect of plant population. The positive response to the increase of population in the Toledo plant was directly related to the level of soil fertility. In Cascavel Goioerê and no significant difference to the increase in population from 50,000 to 80,000 plants ha-1. In all locations the hybrid AS 1570 showed higher productivity of hybrid AS 1565 and AS 1575 / Com objetivo de avaliar o efeito do espaçamento entre linhas de plantio (0,45; 0,68 e 0,90 m), sob quatro densidades populacionais (50.000, 60.000, 70.000 e 80.000 plantas ha-1), sobre a produtividade de grãos de três híbridos de milho ( Zea mays L.) em três ambientes com diferentes altitudes, foram conduzidos experimentos de campo nos municípios de Goioerê, Toledo e Cascavel, ambos no estado do Paraná na região oeste no período de 10 de setembro de 2007 a 10 de abril de 2008. IMPACT OF HIGH-INPUT PRODUCTION PRACTICES ON SOYBEAN YIELDJordan, Daniel L. 01 January 2010 (has links)
High-input management practices are often heavily marketed to producers to increase soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] yield in already high-yielding environments. Field research was conducted in three locations within 6 states (Arkansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, and Minnesota) in 2009 to determine the effect of seed treatment, inoculant, foliar fungicide, additional soil fertility beyond state recommendations, foliar fertilizer, increased population over state recommendations, and narrow row spacing on yield. The high-input system (combination of the management practices) yielded higher than standard-input system (University recommended management practices) in only 8 of the 18 locations. Narrow rows, in both the high and standard-input systems, only increased yield in 4 locations. Inoculant did not increase yield at any location. Foliar fertilizer application and seed treatment increased yield in one location each. The additional soil fertility and fungicide application increased yield in two locations each. The increased population increased yields in 3 of the 18 locations; while an additional fungicide application at R5 only increased yield in 1 location. Foliar fertilizers at rates above commercial use did not increase soybean yield in Kentucky in 2008 or 2009. High-input production practices were largely unsuccessful at increasing soybean yield in these studies.

TWIN AND NARROW ROW WIDTH EFFECTS ON CORN (ZEA MAYS L.) YIELD AND WEED MANAGEMENTMackey, Grant 01 January 2013 (has links)
Corn or maize (Zea mays L.) has been grown in North America for many centuries, and an increase in corn production will continue to be needed. Agriculture producers must meet the demands of feeding and providing for an increasing population of people. In order to meet those needs, different production practices are being investigated as a way to increase grain yield.
Field plots were conducted across the state of Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the interaction between hybrid, row width, and plant density on corn yield. The primary objectives were to test if 1) narrower rows increase grain yield, 2) higher plant densities increase yield in narrow and twin rows, and 3) the interactions among all factors. Three hybrids were evaluated in three row widths (76, 38 cm or twin) at target densities ranging from 74 000 to 124 000 plants ha-1. Interactions between hybrid, row width, and plant density occurred; however, effects on grain yield and plant physiological characteristics were small and variable across all environments. Plant density had the greatest impact on IPAR and grain yield.
Field trials were conducted near Lexington and Princeton, Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the effects of row width on different weed management treatments in corn. The objectives were to 1) evaluate five weed management methods in three row widths (76, 38 cm or twin) and 2) estimate the effect of these practices on corn yield. Herbicides used within each weed management strategy included the residual herbicide S-metholachlor + atrazine (1.4 + 1.8 kg/ha) applied preemergence (PRE) and/or glyphosate (0.86 kg/ha) postemergence (POST). Weed management treatments consisted of a PRE only, PRE followed by POST, POST only, POST + PRE, and an untreated control. Row spacing had little effect on weed suppression and control except for two cases. In general, PRE followed by POST and POST + Residual treatments controlled weeds better compared to PRE only and POST only treatments. Corn yields were higher when a herbicide was used compared to applying no herbicide application.
