Exporting progress: os norte-americanos e o planejamento do campus no Brasil. / Exporting progress: the Americans and campus planning in BrazilFúlvio Teixeira de Barros Pereira 27 June 2017 (has links)
The cultural transference of ideas from United States to Brazil is dealt here and this is based on US technical assistance to campus planning in the country during its most intense period: from 1961, creation of USAID and Alliance for Progress, to 1975, the departure of the greatest advisor in activity in Brazil: Rudolph Atcon. Such technical assistance was fixed on selective action which established a precise frame of reference to be transferred is the initial hypothesis, taking into account the cultural differences between the two countries and the political-ideological interests involved in this assistance. Therefore the selectivity of the US technical assistance to campus planning in Brazil is analyzed under three axes of research: characterize the tensions and cultural resistances in the technical assistance process, point out the economical rationality directed to the campus and identify the political and disciplinary demands in campus planning. The speeches established by the US advisors then active in Brazil in their reports, presentation in seminaries and published books, in addition to the general evaluation reports of the technical assistance program, are used as documentary source. The ideas transferred to Brazil about campus planning were selective and more conditioned by political and economic issues with a view to the depoliticization and the instrumentation of the university to economic development is the conclusion reached. A campus ideology centered in economy, order and discipline of physical space, largely based on writings of Atcon, especially his 1961 essay, was promoted.

This paper investigates the influence of the American consultant Rudolph Atcon on the review process of higher education in Brazil in the 1960s. Atcon was born in Greece and became an American citizen, a country where he had a thorough education, coursing civil engineering (1943) and liberal arts (1951), and completing a graduate's course in philosophy of science and symbolic logic. He developed several studies in Brazil since 1951. In this context, his activities in the field of higher education stand out, which began in the early years of the CAPES (Campaign for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) and, subsequently, in the 1960s, in the context of agreements between the Brazilian Department of Education (MEC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The goal of these agreements was to establish arrangements to stimulate Brazilian education through technical and financial assistance, revising the existing system. In this period, he encouraged the creation of the CRUB (Council of Deans of Brazilian Universities) in 1966, where he served as secretary and drafted an important text on the planning of university spaces, the Manual Sobre o Planejamento Integral do Campus Universitário (Manual On the Integral Planning of the University Campus, 1970). This book had a wide reach in Brazilian universities precisely at the time of their physical expansion. In addition to Brazil and the United States, he also provided services to many universities in Latin American countries, such as Venezuela, Chile, Honduras and Colombia; and in Central America: Santo Domingo and Mexico. The objective of this study is to understand Atcon's thoughts on the university structure, both in a physical and educational sense, in addition to their impact on the planning of some Brazilian universities. As such, two types of university cities were analyzed. the first type included the campuses that the consultant himself highlighted as physical models of his recommendations: Ufes and UFPA; the second selection sought out a university on which he didn’t work directly, but that was established at the same time as the others, in order to understand how the ideas advocated by the consultant circulated across the country. For this analysis the campus of Unicamp was selected. For the development of this study primary sources were given priority, such as the publications in Brazil by Rudolph Atcon himself, including letters obtained from UNESCO's Documentation Center and the Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil (Research and Documentation Center of Contemporary History in Brazil, CPDOC); as well as documents pertaining to the founding of the selected universities. For a broader understanding of the period under study, secondary sources including texts that describe and evaluate his performance in Brazil were also used.

Revivifying the Ur-text : a reconstruction of sword-&-sorcery as a literary formEmery, Philip January 2018 (has links)
From the early 1980s until the late 1990s the genre or sub-genre known as sword-&-sorcery was largely moribund. The Tolkien-derived high fantasy novel, on the other hand, flourished and mutated into six, eight, ten volume, or open-ended series. Even though the terms high fantasy and sword-&-sorcery are sometimes used interchangeably, sword-&-sorcery came to be viewed as an inferior, cruder form: rougher in style, more limited structurally, stunted in terms of character development, even morally questionable (rather than ambiguous). Revivifying the Ur-text aims to investigate if it is possible to subvert the genre, to create a work that realizes the form s potential to exist as literature . In order to do this it attempts to both analyze and re-vision the form by rendering the genre down to its pristine elements - exemplified but not monopolized by the widely-acknowledged creator of the sword-&-sorcery form, Robert E. Howard. The critical areas of the thesis thus concentrate on Howard, but extend backwards to Beowulf as proto-sword-&-sorcery and forwards to contemporary fantasy writers such as Joe Abercrombie and Steve Erikson. It begins by constructing an account of the creation of the form by Howard, hypothesizing that the conditions for its genesis are a result of the writer s internal emotional and thought processes interacting with external circumstances. This is followed by a study of a set of highly influential anthologies published in the sixties edited by Lyon Sprague de Camp, interrogating de Camp s introductions as well as his selections, sub-categorizing these into the variations on the Howardian model which evolved in the wake of his 1920/30s work, work from which other writers developed a commonly perceived genre. From this the thesis proceeds to a consideration of related forms such as epic fantasy, science fantasy, and grimdark, prefaced by a survey and analysis of what sword-&-sorcery was/is perceived to be by commentators such as de Camp, Brian Attebery and Peter Nicholls. These sections are followed and augmented by a refocusing on Robert E. Howard. A consideration of the crucial relationship between violence and the numinous in his fantasy is central to this thesis. This is done both through research into published texts, mainly fictional but also non-fictional, and is discussed both generally and through in-depth case studies of two stories, attempting to identify the particular elements of his writing which contributed to the birth and definition of sword-&-sorcery in order to establish Howard s output as an Ur-text . The creative heart of this research is my sword-&-sorcery fiction, The Shadow Cycles. Here I have attempted to write a narrative in the form which innovates narrative techniques, modifying or abandoning the generic scaffolding of situations, and methods of characterization, and developing a style of language appropriate to my aim of revisioning Howard s Ur-text for the 21st century. This is followed by a concluding afterthesis which draws on all the preceding sections to explicate the relationship between the critical and creative elements of the thesis. As with earlier critical sections, these recruit a synthesis of literary history, influence studies, genre theory, narratology, and practical criticism. By so doing they touch on conceptions of the literary such as those of Bakhtin, Eagleton, Todorov, and Katherine Hume.

Rudolph Walton : one Tlingit man’s journey through stormy seas Sitka, Alaska, 1867-1951Shales, Joyce Walton 05 1900 (has links)
The history of contact with Europeans for Native Americans and the Tlingit
people in particular has been well documented as one of extreme pain, suffering, and
injustice. It was "survival time" for the Tlingit and very difficult choices had to be made.
The life of one Tlingit man, Rudolph Walton, born in Sitka, Alaska in 1867, illuminates
this critical time in the history of the Tlingit people.
This dissertation is ah exploration of the interplay between competing cultures
and interests and it is a quest to understand who Rudolph Walton was and how his life
and the choices he made are connected to the larger historic themes and cross-cultural
issues in Alaska Native education and religious life. In addition to providing a look at
history and at cultural change through an individual's life, choices and experiences, this
dissertation is also about the connection between my ancestors' choices and the impact
those choices had on the survival of a people. It is at once a macro view and a micro
view of the impact of history on Indian people.
After the purchase of Alaska by the United States traditional Tlingit life changed
forever. The Tlingit were forced on a daily basis to balance demands and pressures
made by various Christian religious groups and the U. S. government. They also had to
contend with the prejudice of the average American citizen.
Most Native American history has been limited to the use of records written by
Europeans and Americans. Our understanding of that history is limited because the
voice of the Native American is rarely heard. This dissertation fills a gap in the history of
Southeast Alaska through an examination of the life of Rudolph Walton. The life of Mr.
Walton is important because he left us with a unique set of documents which help us to
understand the difficulties he had to face as a Tlingit man during a critical time in the
history of Southeast Alaska.
