Native to the Soil: Twentieth-Century Agrarian Thought in the Upland South

Harrelson, Alan 09 August 2019 (has links)
Taking the lives and work of writers from the Upland South, this dissertation seeks to find out how agrarian thinkers understood the place and meaning of rural life in the twentieth century. Scholars have underscored the degree to which southern agrarians both drew upon and shaped conservative, even reactionary, intellectual currents in the region. In doing so, however, they have flattened the contours of southern agrarian ideas, leaving the mistaken impression that a single set of values defined it. This study argues that no single point of view, set of beliefs, or value system shaped agrarian thought in the South, but rather, such thinking was made up of a host of different perspectives that collectively point to the continued significance of rural life to American life. Agrarian thinking is worth studying because it reveals the significance of rural life to American identity in a way that helps us understand how ideas about rural life continued to shape the American imagination in the midst of a national decline in rural communities.

Nostalgia and identity : British hand-painted ceramic decoration 1870-1920

Talbot, Kathleen January 2010 (has links)
This thesis discusses hand-painted decoration on British ceramics in the period 1870 to 1920 in the context of changing economic and social climates and gendered employment and occupation. The original impetus for this research came from analysis of ware produced at the South Wales Pottery in Llanelli sometime in the period 1877 to 1920. As the research expanded and links with other potteries were established, it became evident that varied innovations in hand-painted ceramic decoration were influenced by national, local and gendered responses to a period of transition in Britain.

The landscape of my life

Woodfield, Linda January 2007 (has links)
The investigations surrounding the topic ‘The Landscape of My Life’ questions whether it is possible for a landscape to delineate the way in which we live our lives. For a period of thirty-two years my home has been a historic rural property comprising a dwelling and outbuildings on twenty acres of undulating countryside at Carngham. The work conveys the story of my life at this locale and pursues the motives behind the purchase of the country property, the experiences and remembrances that exist from this period of time and reflects upon the implications of a way of life over the last three decades. While considering the impact that a landscape can have on individual lives, it became important to consolidate the insights that surfaced for me with respect to my own life and works and compare it with that of other selected landscape artists. This comparison took into account personal and family backgrounds, artistic techniques, relationships with the land and the motivations that resulted in the depiction of particular landscapes. The result of these observations led to a consideration that not only can a landscape define the way in which we live our lives but, also identifies an affinity between human beings and the environment. / Master of Arts

How Love is Like Drowning

Spicer, Alyssa 01 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis contains the first two acts of a novel about a young girl named Isabeau Jones. After the mysterious drowning death of her mother, Isabeau attempts to find her place as a girl, as a student, as a preternaturally gifted baseball player and as an outsider in a rural East Texas community that does not look kindly on difference. Throughout the novel, Isabeau attempts to negotiate what it means to be female, academically ambitious, physically active and independent in a rural life that does not encourage such qualities in girls. While she navigates her tumultuous relationships with the men in her life, Isabeau also learns more and more about her mother and, eventually, she discovers for herself the kind of woman she can and wants to become.

'The Bobby Calf' - non linear and non classical narrative structures in the cinema of unease

Scrivin, Nicholas January 2008 (has links)
This document outlines the research, development and production of a creative work and accompanying exegesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Communication Studies (MCS) programme. It includes the first draft of a feature film screenplay and an exegesis that explores the research conducted, the theoretical context of the work, and analyses the screenwriting process undertaken. The Bobby Calf (2008) is the first draft of a feature film screenplay that uses a non-classical and non-linear narrative structure to tell the story of its main characters and advance the plot. A psychological drama set in rural New Zealand, The Bobby Calf (2008) was originally inspired by the Janet Frame short story The Reservoir (1963), a story based on a group of youngsters who venture forth to discover the forbidden reservoir; a place their parents had forbid them from going. Set in the outskirts of a small farming settlement, the story is a dark and gothic depiction of rural life and the harshness of reality faced by those brought up in a lifestyle they did not choose. The story focuses on the journey of ADAM (21); both as a young boy in 1988 (called JOHNNY) and as a young adult in 1997, and his mother CATH; a woman whose dreams and aspirations for her son and indeed her own life are slowly slipping away. The story centres on Adam as he grows more uncomfortable with how his life has ended up, and his discovery that the life he has been destined to fulfil is not the one he has chosen. Accompanying the screenplay is an exegesis that explores the research conducted previously on the history of non-classical/non-linear narrative structures and the rationale behind the success and limitations of this now-popular form of storytelling. These types of narrative structures are not a new phenomenon, and as many authors have attested, the basis of this form of storytelling is rooted in the history of screenwriting and film making, and borrows many techniques from theatre and literature.

New Custom for the Old Village Interpreting History through Turkish Village Web-Sites

Sabancioglu, Musemma 27 May 2011 (has links)
It is estimated that there are 35.000 villages in Turkey, and a great number of them have their own unofficial web-sites created as a result of individual efforts. The individuals who prepare these web-sites try to connect with the world via the internet, and represent their past with limited information. Pages on these web-sites that are titled "our history" or "our short history" provide some unique historical, cultural, and anthropological information about the villager's life in rural area. This thesis examines amateur historians' methods of reinterpretation in the past, and as such explore Turkish local history from a new point of view.

The present study seeks to analyze the transformation of land use and of population and the impact of this transformation on the urbanization of rural areas, considering the lack of association between rurality and agriculture. The research focuses on Campinas, in São Paulo, a particularly well-developed region, where the urban process is more advanced. The research seeks to understand the social and spatial configuration of this contemporary rurality and, at the same time, to examine the demographic profile of its population, aspects of its living conditions, as well as the domestic arrangements adopted by the families to achieve their social livelihood. The households were defined as agricultural, non-agricultural, and pluriactive, according to the main occupation of its economically active members. A diversity of arrangements was found in all situations, which were caused by a variety of factors such as family life cycle, occupation and place of work (town or country), and so on. A comparison is made between characteristics of the population resident in rural and urban areas, to verify whether the recent transformation points to a convergence of these profiles, which might suggest a homogenization of the population of Campinas. In another words, the study aims to investigate whether the changes are interfering in the profile and in the living conditions of this population, to the point of becoming indistinct. Another aspect studied is the importance of the rural territory as an alternative for development in the future. Simultaneously, considering the growing process of urbanization, the question is, Will the rural environment disappear or not in this region? According to official data, and also through empirical observation, there are limits and difficulties in the traditional classifications of rural and urban, as well as in the rural/urban dichotomy itself, as an analytical category / Doutorado / Demografia / Doutor em Demografia
