Analysis Of The Growth Dynamics In Turkish Commercial Shipbuilding Sector And Its Prospects

This thesis aims to analyze the growth dynamics of the Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry between 1992 and 2008. It tests the hypotheses whether each of the 14 variables identified in the literature are valid in explaining the growth of Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry between 1992 and 2008 and if there is a dierence in the importance of these variables through utilizing secondary data as well as the results of the semi structured interviews made with 16 experts and managers representing all stakeholders in public institutions, NGOs, academicians and shipyards. It argues that clustering in Tuzla, growth of world GDP and trade and specialization in chemical tankers and container ships, and three-pillar outsourcing were the major reasons for the growth of Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry for the period between 1992 and 2008 and change in dollar exchange rate is a minor reason.

Bahamian ship graffiti

The Bahamian archipelago covers over 5,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean at the northwestern edge of the Caribbean Sea. In the Age of Sail, from the late 15th to early 20th centuries, these islands were on major sailing routes between the Caribbean, Central America, and Europe. Bahamians developed life-ways using their islands’ location to their advantage. Archaeological evidence of the significance of shipping activity is quite lacking. This research aimed to help fill the void by documenting examples of ship graffiti throughout the Bahamas. Examples of ship graffiti were documented with photographs and tracings. The Bahamian examples all date to the 19th and 20th centuries, 100 years later than other examples from the Caribbean and North America. They are also unique in being incised into the stone surfaces of building walls, caves, stones on a hillside, even on a slate fragment. It is possible that ship graffiti were also engraved on wooden surfaces but these have not survived in the archaeological record. Images depict locally-built vessels such as sloops and schooners as well as larger, ocean-going vessels. Ship graffiti are at sites associated mainly with people of African heritage, another possible social grouping being persons of lower economic status. Graffiti details consistently indicate that the artists were familiar with ship construction and rigging. This analysis of ship graffiti gives some understanding of the significance of ships and shipping in the Bahamian economy.

The Correlation Analysis between Fishing Vessels Noise and Night Satellite Image in Northern South China Sea

The distance of sound propagation in water is inversely proportional to the frequency; there for the low frequency noise generated by distance shipping contribute most to the low frequency components of the ocean ambient noise. In order to improve the performance of sonar application, understanding and predication shipping noise is important. In this study, noise data was collected by vertical line array (VLA), in South China Sea of Asian Seas International Acoustics Experiment (ASIEX) in 2001. Due to the limited access to the satellite imagery, and based on the assumption that fishing vessels in South China Sea has similar operational pattern and lighting in recent years, the night time satellite image data was acquired by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program DMSP - Operational Linescan System(DMSP-OLS) of 2005. Linear regression was analyzed between fishing light pixel distribution and low frequency noise level variation, fishing light was expressed in terms of total pixel number and total light intensity, and distance from fishing vessel to VLA was assumed by spherical and cylindrical spread. The results show high correlation between total light intensity and noise level, and cylindrical spreading is better assumption in shallow water on the continental shelf at low frequency. As a conclusion, this study successfully prove that by using the night satellite image, the low frequency fishing vessel noise can be predicted with reasonable accuracy.

Flow around a dredge spoil island in a shallow estuary during peak tidal currents

A vessel-mounted ADCP study focusing on channel-scale flow patterns in Galveston Bay near the Houston Shipping Channel and Mid-Bay Island is described. Winds of 5-7 m/s at 215-230◦ from N were present during data collection. For both peak ebb and flood conditions, the tidal circulation forced flow in a direction opposing the wind, perhaps due to a large-scale flow divergence forced by Mid-Bay Island. The strongest such currents were measured closest the island. During peak flood flow, the shape of the along-channel velocity profile for the open water upwind of the channel at Mid-Bay Island indicated uniform flow, and the salinity profile indicated a well-mixed water column. The near-island along- channel velocity profile showed a near-linear trend, and the salinity profile indicated a stratified water column. This suggested that the stratification had some effect the velocity profile shape, but further research is needed to better quantify this effect. During peak ebb flow, the near-island along-channel velocities were highly variable with respect to the mean velocity, indicating an area of active turbulence. Salinity profiles collected in the open water and near-island both showed stratification, something that was not seen during flood conditions. Differences in observations between flood and ebb flows can possibly be attributed to the survey location with respect to the chain of dredge spoil islands. During flood flows Mid-Bay Island is the first of the islands, and the flows surrounding the island may part of a developing horizontal boundary layer. During ebb flows the island is last in the chain relative to the direction of flow, and therefore the surrounding flows are well back from the leading edge of a horizontal boundary layer. / text

The impact of the diversity of cultures upon the implementation of the international management code for the safe operation of ships and for pollution prevention

Shipping is a fragmented, global industry operating in a culturally diverse environment. As a result of rising maritime accident rates and pollution incidents in the 1970s and 1980s, the International Maritime Organisation introduced two conventions that entered fully into force in 2002: the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and Pollution Prevention (ISM Code), and the 1995 revision of the 1978 Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Code). Introduction of the conventions served to focus the attention of the international maritime community on the need to raise industry-wide safety standards, but questions were raised about whether it was possible to develop a safety culture in a fragmented, global industry and what effects the diversity of cultures might have upon implementation of the ISM Code. This study explores those questions. Subsequent to a review of the literature, a model of the working of the ISM Code is developed and used to identify the constraints and pressures, particularly those that might be influenced by cultural values and attitudes, that impact upon the development and implementation of a Safety Management System in individual shipping organisations, which is the essence of the ISM Code. A comparative case study methodology is adopted for the empirical research and a number of investigative techniques are used to test the ISM Code model and obtain both qualitative and quantitative data to determine whether the impact of culturally influenced constraints and pressures would be best addressed by stricter enforcement of existing regulatory provisions or greater emphasis on education and training. From analysis of the data collected, the study concluded that: • Professional, vocational and safety training correctly utilised are effective in harmonising culturally influenced safety perspectives, thus improving safety performance; and • Culturally influenced constraints and pressures can be dealt with by the application of standard management techniques which, in a multi-cultural environment requires good cross-cultural management skills. The most common method of determining how effective a company has been in dealing with the various constraints and pressures affecting safety performance is to evaluate the efficacy of the organisation's Safety Management System by analysis of accident records, lost time incidents and hazardous occurrences (ACNSI, 1993). These data, reported under the provisions of Clause 9 of the ISM Code, are therefore analysed and compared with an industry sector benchmark. The study however, goes beyond such a purely quantitative approach and establishes the relative safety climate of the case study companies by means of perceptual audit of salient, safety-related factors. This qualitative technique draws together all the main research elements of the study and a Safety Climate Comparator is developed that provides a useful indicator of the relative status of those culturally influenced factors that ultimately affect a company's safety performance. By extension, the technique may be used to provide a Relative Safety Culture Maturity Model to measure the safety climate of other shipping companies relative to a benchmark standard.
