Energy Aware Size Interval Task Based Assignment

Moore, Maxwell January 2022 (has links)
A thesis based around saving response time costs as well as respecting electrical costs of a homogenous multi-server system. / In this thesis we consider the impacts of energy costs as they relate to Size Interval Task Assignment Equally--loaded (SITA-E) systems. We find that given systems which have small and large jobs being processed (high variance systems) we could in some cases find savings in terms of energy costs and in terms of lowering the mean response times of the system. How we achieve this is by first working from SITA-E, wherein servers are always on to Electrically Aware SITA-E (EA-SITA-E) by seeing if it is beneficial to make any of our servers rotate between being on and being off as needed. When most beneficial to do so we will turn off some of the servers in question, after this is completed we reallocate some of the jobs that are on the servers that we decide will be cycling to servers that will remain on indefinitely to better use their idle time. This also lowers the mean response time below what we originally saw with SITA-E, by lowering the variance in the sizes of jobs seen by the servers with the longest jobs. These long--job servers are by far the most impacted by the variance of the sizes of the jobs, so it is very desirable to lower this variance. The algorithm contained here can provide benefits in terms of both energy costs and mean response time under some specific conditions. Later we discuss the effect of errors in our assumed knowledge of task sizes. This research contributes methodology that may be used to expand on EA-SITA-E system design and analysis in the future. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / The intention of this research is to be able to improve on existing size interval task-based assignment policies. We try to improve by turning servers off at key times to save energy costs, while not sacrificing too greatly in terms of mean response time of the servers, and in some cases even improving the mean response time through an intelligent re-balancing of the server loads.

A importância da proteína fosfatase sitA na adesão, integridade da parede celular, biofilme e virulência de Aspergillus fumigatus / The Aspergillus fumigatus sitA phosphatase homologue is important for adhesion, cell wall integrity, biofilm formation, and virulence

Bom, Vinícius Leite Pedro 12 February 2016 (has links)
Esses resultados revelam que a fosfatase SitA está envolvida na via de integridade da parede celular de A. fumigatus possivelmente modulando a atividade de PkcA/MpkA / Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus able to infect immunocompromised patients causing eventually disseminated infections that are difficult to be controlled, and lead to high mortality rates. It is important to understand how are orchestrated the signalling pathways that regulate these factors involved in virulence. Protein phosphatases are central to numerous signal transduction pathways. Here we characterize A. fumigatus protein phosphatase 2A SitA, the S. cerevisiae Sit4p homologue. The sitA gene is not an essential gene and we were able to construct an A. fumigatus null mutant. The ?sitA strain had increased MpkA phosphorylation, was more sensitive to cell wall damaging agents, had increased ??1,3?glican and chitin, and was impaired in biofilm formation. The ?sitA strain is more sensitive to several metals and ions such as MnCl2, CaCl2, and LiCl, however, it is more resistant to ZnSO4. The ?sitA strain was avirulent in a murine model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. These results stress the importance of A. fumigatus SitA as a possible modulator of PkcA/MpkA activity and its involvement in the cell wall integrity pathway

SITA IT outsourcing framework

Makhubela, Sello 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2010. / Purpose: The aim of this research is to establish an IT outsourcing framework to enable SITA to consider key IT outsourcing elements to provide the required IT outsourcing or similar services to its customers to better fulfil its mandate as outlined in the SITA Act and other related legislation. Design/methodology/approach: The information gathered from various literature sources was analysed, evaluated and assessed to determine trends, lessons learnt and pitfalls of IT outsourcing, and IT mergers and acquisitions to develop an IT outsourcing framework and approach. Findings: The IT outsourcing framework for SITA consists of customer value drivers (motivating factors), governance model, engagement and supplier management model, and business model as the key IT outsourcing elements that SITA must consider to successfully provide the required IT outsourcing or similar services to its customers to improve its credibility. Research limitations/implications: To extend this research, more work is necessary to assess each element of the framework to determine specific actions that must be taken to leverage on economies of scale, improve productivity and IT capability within Government departments. Practical implications: This framework is intended to provide SITA with guidelines and an approach that may be used to successfully respond to the customers requests respond to the IT operations of its customers or to collaborate with the customer in providing its IT outsourcing services. Originality/value: This research will contribute towards establishing the best practices for agencies like SITA to successfully provide IT outsourcing services to Government.

“A Bunch of Grapes" : a reading of Lindsey Collen’s The Rape of Sita

Gillman, Natalie B 23 October 2007 (has links)
This feminist analysis addresses Lindsey Collen’s intertextual use of myth in The Rape of Sita and how her reformation of the parodied texts becomes a resistance to patriarchy. Collen’s examination of possible counteractions against patriarchy is analysed and it is determined whether or not she posits writing, especially demythologization, as the best resistance to patriarchal discourse. Also, her assertion that transformation and a unity of the sexes are needed to bring about equality is studied. The methodology used is qualitative and inductive. The sources are examined and interpreted through close-reading strategies which reveal the complexities of the text and the way in which Collen subverts myth. Classical and Hindu myths and other texts, such as T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, are re-read and re-examined to investigate to what extent they have challenged or championed patriarchal ideology, through which it is hoped that a greater understanding of the way in which mythology contributes to attitudes to rape is gained. Three other texts dealing with rape are also studied, in order to better place Collen’s novel in context of the genre. Primarily, feminist criticism, particularly with an African feminist viewpoint, is used. However, because a conflation of post-colonial and postmodern approaches is embedded within feminism, these concepts are dealt with also. Theorists drawn upon include Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, Mircea Eliade and Margaret Atwood. / Dissertation (MA (English))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / English / MA / unrestricted
