The overall purpose of this research was to evaluate the progress of the residents who were living in a group home for the mentally ill located in the Fulton County area of Atlanta, Georgia. The study focused on evaluating residents functioning in daily activities, the extent to which they function in the group home and perform routine assignments by the use of an Individual Progress Rating Scale. Scores were obtained from March 19, through April 15, 1990 and from December 17, 1990 through January 13, 1991. The composite scores were used for the analysis of the data. The ecological perspective addresses environmental problems and needs which can thwart functioning in group home residents. The single system research methodology was employed to evaluate how effectively residents' needs in functioning were met. The study has been to effect a heightened awareness of how intervention strategies, when appropriately employed, can help to improve functioning in group home residents according to goals and objectives of the agency. There were only three residents who remained in the group home studied for a period of nine months in satisfying the evaluation. There was a 94.5% improvement shown in residents' functioning during the December 17, 1990 to January 13, 1991 period.

This study examined the relationship between anger expression and hypertension in the African American population. Fifty African American males and females receiving services in an African American hair salon in Riverdale, Georgia were enrolled in the study. The Spielberger State Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) which provides concise measures of the experience and expression of anger was administered to each participant. The exploratory research design was utilized in this study to examine whether there was a significant relationship between anger expression and hypertension. A stratified analysis was conducted to identify and evaluate confounding and interactive factors such as gender, belief that white racism exists in today's society, whether one has experienced racial discrimination within the last six months, and whether one believes racial discrimination affects one's stress level. However, there was no evidence of interaction between any of the factors and anger expression in the African American population. The hypothesis indicated that there will be a statistically significant relationship between anger expression and hypertension. Findings indicated that there is no statistically significant relationship between anger expression and hypertension. The conclusion drawn from this study demonstrated that more research is needed to determine the relationship between emotions and health in the African American population.

<p> The purpose of this project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to provide an employment assistance program for homeless men at The Salvation Army Hospitality House in Santa Ana, California. Homelessness and the resulting health, economic, and social problems are significant public concerns and men are overrepresented among the homeless. Unemployment is one of the most cited reasons for being homeless among men residing at the host agency. The proposed program would provide these men with work/trade skills and job placement assistance and help them move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. The Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation was selected as the most appropriate funding source. If funded, the program would reduce the number of homeless men in the area. The evaluation of the program would also contribute to the knowledge base of social work by demonstrating techniques to implement strength-based, evidence-based practices.</p>

The study provided an overview of an evaluation of treatment programs for alcoholics. The history of alcoholism was discussed along with the affects that substance abuse has on various individuals. Twenty-five subjects were given a pre and post-test administration of the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors to determine the level of support received from relatives and friends.

<p> The purpose of this thesis project was to write a grant proposal to secure funding for a yoga therapy program, Yogi Paws Therapy, for young adults struggling with mental disorders at the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance&rsquo;s (OCAPICA) Well(ness)essity Mental Health Department in California. A literature review was conducted to examine topics related to mental disorders among young adults including prevalence, risk factors, co-morbidity, and consequences. The purpose of the proposed program was to provide yoga therapy and reduce their depressive and/or anxiety symptoms and improve their perceived well-being. The Weingart Foundation was selected for the proposed grant funding. The actual submission or funding of this grant proposal was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.</p>
