Theoretical Studies of Crystallisation in Hard Sphere Systems

Wild, Robert John January 2004 (has links)
The primary focus of this work is to develop an understanding of crystallisation in hard sphere systems. The thesis is presented in two parts. The first section is an investigation of the liquid/crystal interface at equilibrium using molecular dynamical simulations. The objective is to understand how the interface might bridge between the disordered and ordered states in liquid/crystal environments. Topological measures of structure are used to investigate whether any precursor structures are present in the liquid phase, close to the interface, that would allow transition from disorder to order. This differs from other work where simpler measures of structure, classifying phases into either liquid or crystal, are used. The results indicate that the liquid/crystal interface of a hard sphere system is very narrow and no readily observable structures were found that extended past the width of the equilibrium interface. The second section of the thesis is a theoretical study of growth kinetics in hard sphere systems using density functional theory. The kinetics in a fixed volume are examined with a single conserved order parameter. The work is extended incorporating both conserved particle and non-conserved structure dynamics. The kinetics of growth are examined and it is shown that the small initial crystals are quickly isolated from the higher pressure of the surrounding system through the development of a depletion zone.

Numerical Simulation of Nanoscale Flow: A Molecular Dynamics Study of Drag

Sirk, Timothy 02 June 2006 (has links)
The design of pathogen biosensors may soon incorporate beads having a nanoscale diameter, thus making the drag force on a nanoscale sphere an important engineering problem. Flows at this small of a scale begin to appear "grainy" and may not always behave as a continuous fluid. Molecular dynamics provides an approach to determine drag forces in those nanoscale flows which cannot be described with continuum (Navier-Stokes) theory. This thesis uses a molecular dynamics approach to find the drag forces acting on a sphere and a wall under several different conditions. The results are compared with approximations from a Navier-Stokes treatment and found to be within an order of magnitude despite the uncertainties involved in both the atomic interactions of the molecular dynamics simulation and the appropriate boundary conditions in the Navier-Stokes solution. / Master of Science

To invigorate civil society : the development of community radio stations in Taiwan

Ke, Shun-Chih January 2000 (has links)
This thesis examines the emergence and current situation of community radio stations in Taiwan, which have been perceived as an important part of a media public sphere for people to access and participate in. It therefore needs to consider community and community radio stations in both Western and Taiwanese contexts, and work by Habermas and others concerning the `public sphere' with reference to the current situation. In-depth interviews, content analysis and document analysis have been used in collecting research data. The factors which influence the development of community radio stations as an aspect of the public sphere in Taiwanese society are shown to be the impact of the state, in the first place, and then commercial market pressures. In addition, the development of communication technology has shown its potential effects by re-defining the meaning of `community' and `radio station'. The research goes on to examine the institution and output of the community radio stations, their interaction with society, and their relationship with their users. We find that the development of community radio stations in Taiwan is characterised by diverse formations: they are public spaces for the members of community to share and discuss public issues; they are hybridised public spheres for people to share personal emotion and talk about private affairs; they are also an expansion of the broadcasting market to further commercial interests. However, this development of community radio stations reflects the social reality of the existing and necessarily plural public spheres
