Previous issue date: 2011-02-25 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / The Centers for Research, Innovation and Diffusion (Cepid) of the Sao Paulo Research Foundation Centre are devoted to multidisciplinary basic research and innovation, knowledge transfer to business and public sectors, and interaction with the educational system. Hence the relevance of consistent public communication of science and technology. This masters dissertation carried out an analysis of the communication initiatives made by the Multidisciplinary Center for Development of Ceramic Materials (Sao Carlos, SP), a Cepid which became a National Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology. In the field of the science communication, the center output is vast and focuses on a research and development area in which increasing resources have been invested in Brazil. The center usually publishes online news releases and produced 68 programs of a TV series named From the classical ceramic to the nanotechnology , with 15 minute-length each, available in DVD and broadcasted on the University Channel of São Carlos. We studied such communication output with framing analysis. The results showed that aspects of great relevance to S&T communication were often absent from our sample, which indicates opportunities to advance the center performance in that field. We suggest the adoption of eight categories of information as news values in accordance with the context of the democratic model of science communication.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-24 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) / Under the approach of social studies of Science and technology (STS), tis research has analyzed issues in the current constitution of the mental health field that has taken care of children and adolescents in Brazil. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical contribution, a case study was carried out in a Centro de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPSi), in a country in the state of São Paulo, in order to analyzed the institutionalized relations by the multiprofessionals that work in this Center, which is an apparatus implemented by the National Mental Health Policy (PNSM). The methodology was elaborated on corresponding literature to the theme of this research, and the case study was carried out through semi structured interviews with some professionals from CAPSi, through direct observation of the CAPSi’s team meetings, through meetings between the constituting service network to the municipal mental health, and by analyzed the Minutes Meeting of CAPSi’s team. The analysis of the data showed evidence of the dominance of psychiatric science in the epistemological basis that build concepts and institutions mental disorders care, as well as the existence of conflicting paradigms, the psychopharmalogical trivialization, considerations about children and adolescents social leadership and about the non recognition of CAPSi as healthcare institution by the municipal services and by the
scholar and juridical fields. With the results of this research, it is expected to contribute to the STS studies and to researchers interested in the theme, intending to generate reflections and reviews about
the efficiency and effectivenss of care for children and adolescents diagnosed with mental disorders, and the social position of children and adolescents.
FAPESP: 2014/06638-0

Gathering, translating, enacting : a study of interdisciplinary research and development practices in Technology Enhanced LearningRimpiläinen, Sanna K. January 2012 (has links)
This is an ethnographic case-study of research and development practices taking place in an interdisciplinary project between education and computer sciences. The Ensemble-project, part of the Technology Enhanced Learning programme (2008-12), has studied case-based learning in a number of diverse settings in Higher Education, working to develop semantic technologies for supporting that learning. Focussing on one of the six research settings, the discipline of archaeology, the current study has had three purposes. By opening up to scrutiny the practices of research and development, it has firstly sought to understand how a shared research question is answered in practice when divergent research approaches are brought to bear upon it. Secondly, the study has followed the emergence of a piece of semantic technology through these practices. The third aim has been to assess the advantages and disadvantages of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) in studying unfolding, open-ended processes in real time. Through critical ethnographic participation, multiple ethnographic research methods, and by drawing on ANT as theoretical practice, the study has shown the precarious and unpredictable nature of research and development work, the political nature of research methods and how multiple realities can be produced using them, and the need for technology development to flexibly respond to changing circumstances. We have also seen the mutual adoption and extension of practices by the two strands of the project into each others’ domains, and how interdisciplinary tensions resolved, while they did not disappear, through pragmatic changes within the project. The study contributes to the interdisciplinary fields of Science and Technology Studies (STS) where studies on the ‘soft sciences’, such as education, are few, and a new field of Studies in Social Science and Humanities (SSH) which is emerging alongside and from within the STS. Interdisciplinary endeavours between fields pertaining largely to the natural and the social sciences respectively have not been studied commonly within either field.
