Baudelaire and the Rival of Nature: the Conflict Between Art and Nature in French Landscape Painting

Pegram, Juliette January 2012 (has links)
The rise of landscape painting as a dominant genre in nineteenth century France was closely tied to the ongoing debate between Art and Nature. This conflict permeates the writings of poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire. While Baudelaire scholarship has maintained the idea of the poet as a strict anti-naturalist and proponent of the artificial, this paper offers a revision of Baudelaire's relation to nature through a close reading across his critical and poetic texts. The Paris Salon reviews of 1845, 1846 and 1859, as well as Baudelaire's Journaux Intimes , Paradis Artificiels and two poems that deal directly with the subject of landscape, are examined. The aim of this essay is to provoke new insights into the poet's complex attitudes toward nature and the art of landscape painting in France during the middle years of the nineteenth century. / Art History

Confrontos e paralelos: O Salão Internacional de Arte Fotográfica de São Paulo (1942-1959) / Confrontation and paralels: O Salão internacional de Arte Fotográfica de São Paulo (1942-1959)

Porto, Marly Terezinha Castro 28 March 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the legacy of Salão Internacional de Arte Fotográfica de São Paulo (São Paulo International Photographic Art Salon) organized by Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante between 1942 and 1959. This period starts from the organization of the 1st Salão Paulista de Arte Fotográfica (São Paulo Photographic Art Salon), which soon after became international, and extends to the end of the 1950s, when Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante started losing the importance it had gained in the art circles. The absence of studies on photo club salons and exhibitions, as well as on Foto Cine Clube Bandeirantes importance for the onset of one of the branches of modern photography in Brazil, warrant the chosen theme. The primary sources for research used were Salão Internacional de Arte Fotográfica de São Paulos catalogs and Boletim Foto Cine (the photo clubs newsletter), which allowed for exhaustive survey of both the photographers and the photographs participating in the various editions of the Salon during the period of study. The scope of this research takes photo clubs as a cultural phenomenon, organized as a sociability network capable of fostering the sharing of information and experience amongst its members. It considers that the comparisons and parallels drawn between the photographs the salons displayed over the years were crucial for the formation of a specific visual culture, whose characteristics this study attempts to identify. In this context, Salão Internacional de Arte Fotográfica de São Paulo is understood as the main forum of Brazilian photo-club-related activities in the 1940s and 1950s

Desvages, Mathilde 23 September 2016 (has links)
This Ph. D. dissertation focuses on the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture from its creation in 1949 to the death of Denys Chevalier, its founding member, in 1978. This dissertation seeks to analyze thirty annual Salons which took place in parisian parks and gardens where artworks by nearly one thousand five hundred exhibitors were displayed. The first chapter explores the career of the art critic Denys Chevalier, the ambitions of the Salon – how to display the sculptures, how to assist the audience in their discovery of the sculptures – and the aesthetic trends of the time. While figurative art prevailed over the first fifteen years at the Salon (second chapter), the gradual entry of abstract sculpture causes most of the figurative sculptors to leave in 1964. Thus the third chapter covers the period from 1965 to 1978. The Salon de la Jeune Sculpture then leaves the gardens of the Rodin Museum, redirects its aesthetic choices and adjusts to new outdoor spaces. Through the history of the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture and its founder Denys Chevalier, this dissertation investigates the aesthetic and institutional situation of sculpture in the second half of the twentieth century, at a time when the sculptural field undergoes profound transformations related to its definition and raises the question of its autonomy.
