Coding in P-12 Education from the Beginning to the End

Nivens, Ryan Andrew 02 June 2017 (has links)
Our focus is the value of computer coding knowledge as a new literacy in the information economy. Examples of differences between “scripting” and “computer programming” will be illustrated. Our goal is that all middle and high school students would have some experience with coding before graduation. We see the mathematics class as a natural fit for learning this new literacy. Using Raspberry Pi computing devices, participants will try some hands-on coding with data sets that are familiar and relevant. We will conclude with a summary of the efforts made by ETSU to increase the coding literacy in Northeast Tennessee.

Electricity and Integers Meet One-Step Equations

Reis, Lisa, Nivens, Ryan Andrew 24 October 2017 (has links)
Participants will engage with a STEM lesson plan on Electricity. The mathematical focus will be on adding and subtracting integers using electric forces, as well as one-step equations using scientific formulas including Ohm's Law and calculating electric power.

Mathematics Outreach via the ETSU STEM Center

Bodbole, Anant, Nivens, Ryan Andrew 26 July 2017 (has links)
I will describe a variety of summer initiatives housed at the ETSU Center of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education. These include the Eastman MathElites Program; the Niswonger Mathletes Program; Improving Teacher Quality Projects; the Tennessee Governor’s School; and State MSP Projects. Most importantly, though, I will describe efforts, via Battelle and State funding, to enable HS students to incorporate open source coding into their math classes.

3 Act in Math Tasks

Nivens, Ryan Andrew, Price, Jamie, Davis, Ginger 31 May 2018 (has links)
Storytelling gives us a framework for certain mathematical tasks that is both prescriptive enough to be useful and flexible enough to be usable. Many stories divide into three acts, each of which maps neatly onto these mathematical tasks.
