High frequency of plagiarism in medical thesis from a peruvian public university.

Saldaña-Gastulo, J. Jhan C., Quezada-Osoria, C. Claudia, Peña-Oscuvilca, Américo, Mayta-Tristan, Percy 21 March 2014 (has links)
An observational study was conducted to describe the presence of plagiarism in medical thesis in 2008 performed at a public university in Peru. Search for plagiarism in 33 thesis introductions using a Google search algorithm, characterizes of the study type and we search in electronic form if the thesis mentor have published articles in scientific journals. We found evidence of plagiarism in 27/33 introductions, 37.3% (171/479) of all the paragraphs analyzed had some degree of plagiarism, literal plagiarism was the most frequent (20/27) and journals were the most common sources of plagiarism (19/27). The characteristics of the studies were observational (32/33), cross-sectional (30/33), descriptive (25/33) and retrospective (19/33). None of the authors had published in a scientific journal, and only nine of his tutors of them had at least one publication. No association was found between the characteristics of the thesis and the presence of plagiarism. In conclusion, we found a high frequency of plagiarism in theses analyzed. Is responsibility of medical schools take the necessary actions to detect and avoid plagiarism among their students. / Revisión por pares.

Publicar ou perecer: uma análise críticonormativa das características e dos efeitos dos modelos cientométrico e bibliométrico adotados no Brasil / Publish or perish: a critical-normative analysis of the characteristics and effects of scientométric and bibliometric models adopted in Brazil

Murilo Mariano Vilaça 18 December 2013 (has links)
First, in order to contextualize the theme, I review the literature on the commodification of education process. My goal is to demonstrate the business inclination facing the educational public policies, especially those assumed to the Graduate level. Furthermore, I select and analyze some concepts that help me to understand the theme as well a show they keep the inadequacy of the logic of market economy in order to manage the Academy and the science. In the second part of the thesis, I focus on the criteria used to determine the rank of Graduate Programs and distinguish researchers between them. The thesis to be defended is that the CAPES evaluation for Graduate level is based on a standard productivity model called periodicracy which creates a strong pressure to publish articles in academic and scientific journals, since these products are privileged in the current objectivist measurement model. Therefore produce/publish articles becomes the preeminent Academic-scientific performance. This entails the creation of an academic scientific market and a market of publications, which creates a propitious environment for the occurrence of Academic-scientific misconduct.

Mongeon, Philippe 09 1900 (has links)
Over the last few years, major cases of scientific fraud shocked the scientific community, and the number of retractions each year increased considerably. Scientific misconduct accounts for approximately more than half of those retractions. It is assumed that co-authors of retracted papers are affected by their colleagues’ misconduct, and the aim of this study is to provide empirical evidence of how researchers’ careers are affected by a retraction. We retrieved all (443) publications retracted from 1996 to 2006 from PubMed, signed by 1818 authors. Using the Web of Science (WOS), we measured the productivity, impact and collaboration of each of those authors for a period of five years before and after the retraction. Our results show that retractions affect the career of co-authors, mostly in terms of scientific output. This impact is felt more strongly in cases of fraud and for first authors.
