Regeneration by seeds and vegetation structure in alpine plant communities, subarctic FinlandWelling, P. (Pirjo) 15 November 2002 (has links)
Abstract
The aims were to examine the importance of regeneration by seeds, the
influence of plant traits and disturbances, and the role of seed-seedling
conflicts in regeneration and in the determination of vegetation structure.
The study was carried out at in a subarctic alpine area (Kilpisjärvi
69°01'N 20°50E', Finland).
Seed bank and seedling densities were high in many plant communities
(ranges 99 -1109 viable seeds/m2 and 0.2-227
seedlings/m2, respectively). Effective seedling
recruitment is reflected in vegetation as a high proportion of plants with
poor or no vegetative reproduction ability. This development may take place
in meadows and snowbeds where herbs (e.g. Gnaphalium
supinum, Sibbaldia procumbens,
Veronica alpina and Viola
biflora) are abundant. On the other hand, the low proportion of
these plants in heath vegetation reflects ineffective seedling
recruitment.
Floristic similarities between the consecutive phases in the
regeneration pathway may be low despite effective seedling recruitment.
Clonality, large and small seed sizes and appendaged diaspores limit the
movement of species from phase to phase.
Generally, disturbances facilitate effective regeneration by seeds.
Grazing promotes species with large seed banks and is therefore one reason
for high seed bank densities. Freezing and melting processes negate a
negative influence of altitude on seed bank densities in the phase of
seedlings. However, if disturbances are severe and continuous and the soil
is compact, unstable or dry, disturbances are not beneficial. The same is
true if there is a shift in the species composition of seedlings from gaps
to closed vegetation. This phenomenon occurred in a rich meadow.
Seed-seedling conflicts limit regeneration by seeds in low-herb
snowbeds and Ranunculus glacialis-Gymnomitrion
snowbeds. Vegetative reproduction and infrequent pulses of seedling
recruitment negate an influence of short-term seedling recruitment on the
spatial structure of vegetation. Extreme conditions, such as low
temperatures, instability of the soil and late snowmelt modify the
influence of factors that are important in more moderate conditions.
To conclude, all transitions limit regeneration by seeds. However,
favourable conditions (e.g. moist conditions in a meadow) partly eliminate
the obstacles against seedling emergence. Regeneration by seeds therefore
has a major impact on the dynamics and structure of vegetation. In heath
vegetation, where bare soils are dry and the moss cover is thick, large
seed banks and seed rains do not guarantee effective seedling recruitment.
The regeneration process is reduced in the early phases, and plants that reproduce primarily by seeds have a minor role in vegetation. The accumulation of seed banks is effective in these circumstances.

In current projects of ecological restoration, the return of ecosystem functions and natural processes is an important aim. However, many areas have lost their resilience due the high damage they have been submitted to, and this makes the ecological restoration a challenging process. For the success of the proposed activities, it is essential that during the project, the ecosystem can return to its successional trajectory without necessity of strong human intervention in the future. The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the initial processes of ecological restoration in areas severally degraded by coal mining, through analyses of successional trajectories regarding: (1) growth and mortality rates of planted samplings and their relationship to functional traits; (2) seed rain, associated or not, to perches and its relationship to natural regeneration of woody species; and (3) natural regeneration of woody species and its relationship to abiotic and biotic variables. Planted saplings under limited conditions (due the high impact of mining) showed to have distinct performance and trait relationships, somewhat different to the expected for species under natural conditions. The study indicates that the limitation of seeds in areas under ecological restoration can be reduced by the use of perches, increasing especially the number of seeds of non-pioneer and zoocoric species. Nevertheless, we did not found a relation between seed rain and recruitment rate. Soil chemistry (abiotic variable) and the cover of exotic grasses (biotic variable) were the variables with the strongest negative impact on natural regeneration. We conclude that it is possible to return to successional processes in areas of riparian forest severely damaged by coal mining activities in a relatively short time, but recommend the use of realistic, intermediate restoration goals and detailed monitoring in early restoration phases.

Effects of a Wildfire on Seed Rain and Soil Seed Reserve Dynamics of a Good Condition Sagebrush-Grass Rangeland in Central UtahHassan, Mohamed Ali 01 May 1983 (has links)
The objectives of this research were to investigate the ecological importance of soil seed reserves and seed rain on regeneration of a good condition sagebrush- grass range vegetation after a wildfire and draw conclusions leading to better understanding and management of such ecosystems. Investigations were conducted for two successive years on a community where major plants were neither rhizomatous nor sprouting. In such cases soil seed reserves and seed rain have to be the main source of regeneration. In addition to monitoring soil seed reserves and seed rain, vegetation changes during the past two years and the historical conditions of the study area were examined.
Study of germinable soil seed reserve dynamics showed that fire can have a destructive effect on this portion of the community. Cheatgrass soil seed reserves were high even in good condition sagebrush-grass vegetation. Although fire reduced the Bromus tectorum seed bank by half, the cover of this grass increased to almost twice the level observed on the control (unburned) plots a year later. This shows the enormous reproductive capacity of this highly competitive weed species following a wildfire.
Even though the pre-burn vegetation contained a high proportion of native perennial plants, soil seed reserves and seed rain had very small proportions of their germinable seeds.
Timing of the fire is likely important in controlling undesirable range plants and their seeds. Had the fire occurred earlier when more seeds were attached to the culms, greater reduction in cheatgrass probably would have been obtained. Timing of the fire was just right to control sagebrush, because it occurred before their seed set and complete destruction of this species was achieved. Mormon tea was the only shrub to reestablish its cover relatively rapidly. This was related to its strong ability to sprout from root crowns.
Greater germinable soil seed reserves were found under shrub canopies than in the inter spaces. This is probably related to the semi-logarithmic dispersal of seed where seed fall is greatest closest to mother plants (Harper 1977). Since flammable fuel follows the same pattern, it was found that fire has a serious impact on soil seed reserves at "hot" points, but temperatures were apparently not hot enough to cause much damage on seed banks at "cold" points in the former interspaces.
Since soil seed reserves accumulate in significantly higher proportions in the surface 0-2 cm, fire has a more serious impact on the seeds in surface soil than those lower lower down.
Variance of the germinable seed rain was so high that none of the grand totals, life forms totals and species values were statistically significant at alpha

January 2010 (has links)
Given that bamboos are able to quickly expand in environment by either vegetative growth or massive seed production, bamboos promote significant changes in plant community structure. Thus, this work aimed at assessing the plant life cycles in bamboo (B) and non bamboo stands (NB) in an Atlantic forest area where the native bamboo Guadua tagoara occurs at high densities. The specific goals of this study were showed in chapters. For chapter 1, to know bird species associated with bamboo and non bamboo stands, identify the birds which belong to seed dispersers guild of Euterpe edulis, Sloanea guianensis and Virola bicuhyba and evaluate dispersal effectiveness and potential contribution to seed dispersal for the three plant species. For chapter 2, assess the spatial pattern of early regeneration stages of plant communities in B and NB stands. Finally, for chapter 3, quantify propagule losses as well as the probabilities of transition between each stage for all three plant species, and identify the demographic bottlenecks in recruitment that could collapse natural regeneration of the three plant species in B and NB stands. We verified that a higher number of bird species was registered in B stands than in NB. Most of registered birds in both B and NB stands were insectivorous followed by frugivorous species. The dispersal effectiveness of Euterpe, Sloanea and Virola depended on a restricted subset of effective bird dispersers. Birds which mostly contributed to the seed dispersal of Virola occurred more frequently in B. This pattern was similar for Sloanea while Euterpe exhibited a mixed pattern with some bird species contributing to the dispersal in the B stands and other species contributing in NB stands. We conclude that a substantial number of frugivorous bird species can favor borders of bamboo patches... The degradation of tropical forests affects the mutualistic interaction between plants and frugivores, with reflexes in seed rain. Due to their feeding behavior and high capacity of displacement, birds and bats are important agents in restoration process, because they carry the seeds from well-preserved sources to degraded ones. This work evaluated the zoochorous seed rain in a restoration physiognomic mosaic of Atlantic Forest in São Paulo state, considering the birds and bats contribution, as well the influence of environmental factors on the seed rain. Seeds were analyzed according to their dispersal system (dispersed by birds or bats), successional group (pioneer and non-pioneer) and origin (planted and colonizing species). The seed rain between physiognomies is also compared. The abundance and richness of seeds were higher in the rainy season, which points to a high resource availability to fauna in this period. The environmental variables did not explain the overall abundance, the abundance of chiropterochorous seeds and the abundance of pioneer seeds. These results were influenced by some species largely collected in all sampling points, which made difficult a pattern. The abundance of ornitochorous seeds was explained by density of zoochorous plants, suggesting that these species are an important attraction factor for birds. The abundance of non-pioneer seeds was negatively related to canopy opening and positively related to understory density. The overall richness and the richness of ornitochorous seeds were negatively related to canopy opening. The richness of chiropterochorous, pioneer and non-pioneer seeds were negatively related to canopy opening and positively related to understory density. The physiognomies under advanced regeneration stages had higher seed richness, although the abundance did not differ between areas. These results show that the structural complexity of environment is an important factor to seed rain, by attracting more dispersers. There was a higher abundance and richness of ornitochorous seeds, which shows that birds contributed more to forest recovery. Pioneer species are also more abundant and richer. The low dispersion of non-pioneer seeds is worrying, once suggests that medium and big size dispersers don¿t occur in the most of the study area, delaying the natural restoration process. Colonizing species were richer, although the abundance between colonizing and planted seeds species did not differ. It shows that there was a seed flow from source areas to restored ones over the years. The seed rain analysis allows the conclusion that restoration is occurring spontaneously in the studied area, since transportation of seeds are occurring across all the restoration mosaic. However, the high richness and abundance of pioneer species points to the necessity of management actions in order to accelerate the colonization by medium and large size frugivorous, improving the local seed rain / Mestrado / Ecologia / Mestra em Ecologia

Mountain Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp vaseyana) Seed ProductionLandeen, Melissa L 01 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) is the most widespread and common shrub in the sagebrush biome of western North America. Of the three most common subspecies of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), mountain big sagebrush (ssp. vaseyana; MBS) is the most resilient to disturbance, but still requires favorable climactic conditions and a viable post-fire seedbank for successful unassisted recovery. This study was designed to assess MBS seed production throughout post-fire recovery. We performed 2 pilot studies to develop methods for estimating seed production and plant age. The results of the pilot studies and a space-for-time substitution strategy were used to measure seed production on 13 sites ranging from 10-33 years post-fire. We hypothesized that seed rain (mean seeds produced/ m2) would peak before stand density had maximized due to decreasing individual plant fecundity (mean seeds produced/ plant) in high density stands. We measured population density and individual plant fecundity for three size classes of MBS and used forward stepwise regression analysis to identify environmental factors influencing seed production over time. Density for small (basal stem diameter (BSD) <1 cm) and medium-sized (BSD=1-3 cm) plants was consistently low and was not affected by time since fire (TSF), while large-sized (BSD > 3 cm) plant density increased steadily with TSF (p=0.0002). Plant fecundity decreased with TSF for all three size classes (p range = 0.019 – 0.0506), with large plants dominating reproductive output. Small and medium-sized plant fecundity was negatively correlated with winter precipitation (p range = 0.0106-0.0174), while large plant fecundity was positively correlated with winter precipitation (p<0.0001) and negatively correlated with elevation (p=0.0001). Despite losses in plant fecundity over time for all size classes, steady recruitment in population density resulted in increased seed rain (p=0.0039), suggesting that increases in stand density compensated for losses in individual plant fecundity. Results partially support our hypothesis that the time required for MBS seed rain to be maximized was not tightly bound to indicators of stand maturation. Understanding the factors that influence post-fire seed production can help land managers better manage for successful recovery by providing them with tools for evaluating seed production capabilities of MBS communities.

A perspective on the seed bank dynamics of Acacia salignaStrydom, Matthys 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScConEcol)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Acacia saligna, or Port Jackson, is an Australian Acacia which has spread throughout the Western
and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa where it has become invasive and a prominent feature
of the vegetation. In areas where A. saligna establishes it replaces natural vegetation, alters
ecosystem processes and interferes with agricultural practices. Consequently large management
efforts have been made to eradicate this invasive alien tree. However, its large and persistent soil
stored seed bank, even in the presence of management and biological control agents, poses a
serious obstacle to its successful removal. Furthermore the reproductive output and the size of the
seed bank of A. saligna over its whole distribution as well as the variation of seed production and
the seed bank with environmental conditions in time and space is poorly known. Understanding the
seed bank dynamics of A. saligna in time and space is essential for reducing invasive success and
achieving management objectives. This study has filled this knowledge gap through studying the
seed production and seed bank of A. saligna over its invaded range in South Africa, including how
environmental factors influence these factors in time and space. The seed rain of A. saligna was
assessed at 10 sites across its distribution in South Africa. The seed rain of A. saligna at the sites
was determined through the use of seed rain traps. Twenty five traps were placed out at every site
during November 2010 (pre-dehiscence) which was collected again during April 2011 (postdehiscence).
The seed bank of A. saligna was estimated through sampling at 25 sites across its
distribution range in South Africa. The seed bank was sampled during April 2010 (postdehiscence),
November 2010 (pre-dehiscence) and April 2011 (post-dehiscence) through taking 50
litter and soil samples at every site which gave a total sampling size of 3 750 for both the seed in
the soil and litter over its distribution in South Africa. In addition the average tree diameter, tree
density, average number of Uromycladium tepperianum induced galls per tree, the summer aridity
index, De Martonne aridity index, winter concentration of precipitation, temperature of coldest
month and the soil texture for every site was determined. The damage done by the seed feeding
weevil, Melanterius compactus, was also estimated for the seed rain study sites. Water availability
during the hot summer months was assessed as the most important factor governing seed
production and seed bank size. Riparian and non-riparian water regimes were shown to be
important in understanding the seed bank dynamics of A. saligna over its distribution range in the
Cape Floristic Region. In non-riparian A. saligna populations the seed production and consequently
the size of the seed bank and its rate of accumulation is limited by both water and temperature and
in riparian A. saligna populations, only by temperature. Therefore, two environmental gradients
influence the seed bank dynamics of Port Jackson in South Africa. In non-riparian A. saligna
populations the number of seed produced and the accumulation of seed in the seed bank generally
increases along the west coast of South Africa from Clanwilliam towards Cape Town and along the
south coast from Cape Town towards Port Elizabeth. Seed banks are larger closer to the coast,
when A. saligna populations of similar age are compared. In riparian A. saligna populations, the number of seed produced generally increases from Port Elizabeth towards Cape Town and from
Cape Town towards Clanwilliam, again, with larger seed banks being accumulated closer to the
coast, when populations of similar age are compared. This study provides managers with a useful
tool for prioritising management efforts.

Vyf-entwintig
lokvalle was uitgeplaas in elke bestudeerde Port Jackson perseel gedurende November
verspreiding van A. saligna in Suid-Afrika.
In nie-oewer A. saligna populasies word saadproduksie
kusgebiede, wanneer A. saligna populasies van dieselfde ouderdom vergelyk word. Hierdie studie

Chuva de sementes em ambientes perturbados e não-perturbados na Floresta de Mata Atlântica do sul da Bahia, Brasil / Seed rain on disturbed and undisturbed environments at the Atlantic Forest of south Bahia, BrazilSilva, Joyce Tatiane Rodrigues da 17 June 2008 (has links)
The disturbance level to which a forest is exposed to may affect its dynamics, modifying the recruits sources. The main mechanisms of forest natural regeneration is seed rain (dispersion), soil seed bank and seedlings establishment. This study aims to analyze seed rain within fire and natural (gaps) disturbed areas and sites with no sign of recent disturb at Atlantic Forests of South Bahia. Sampling was taken monthly through seed rain collectors located under gaps, understorey and fire disturbed areas, in a total of 144 0,5x0,5 m collectors. Although seed rain sampling was continuous, fluctuations were noticed for distinct seasonal periods and environments. A total of 41.910 seeds were sampled, representing 198 morfo-species; 120 were identified and classified into 31 botanical families and 57 genera. The remaining 78 morfo-species were represented by 256 seeds or 0,6% of total sampled seeds. The lower quantities of seeds were observed within gaps environments (7.555 seeds, representing 1,25 seeds/m²/day), while the higher amounts were observed for the fire disturbed areas (13.656 seeds or 2,17 seeds/m²/day). No significant differences were found regarding anemochoric species occurrence between gaps and understorey environments. Similarities were found between fire disturbed areas (MP) and their surrounding understorey environments (SB) and also between gaps (C) and understorey close to fire disturbed areas (SB). The periods of seeds deposition higher rate had been mainly concentrated in the middle of the year for practically all environments. Seed rain was characterized by few species that produced around 98% of the total amount of sampled seeds, with most of the species being represented by few seeds during this study. The dominant species were represented by three native pioneer tree species: Miconia mirabilis, Cecropia pachystachya and Henriettea succosa. A more detailed analysis of the seed rain revealed that Miconia mirabilis and Cecropia pachystachya have an annual deposition pattern, suggesting that these species have a defined phenology, with long periods of seeds deposition along a year. Henriettea succosa presented the most homogeneous distribution among the observed environments, with higher levels of deposition during April 1999. Further studies are needed to understand the observed patterns of this study, especially on M. mirabilis and C. pachystachya phenology.
