The Semantic Functions of -or/-er/-ee Nominalizations / -or/-er/-ee Nominalizacijų Semantinės Funkcijos

Jankevičiūtė, Giedrė 28 September 2010 (has links)
Nominalization as a matter of great concern of linguistic research has been analyzed widely over the last forty years from different theoretical viewpoints with fluctuating aims and formalisms. The process of nominalization refers to the use of a verb or an adjective into a noun, with or without morphological transformation, so that the word can act as the head of a noun phrase, e.g. develop→ development, close → closure, write → writing, etc. In present-day English, -er, -or and -ee nominalizations show a wide scope of semantic, morphological and syntactic features. Thus the aim of the present study is to analyze the derivational, transformational, and semantic peculiarities of -er, -or and -ee nominalizations. Like many corpus investigations, this study deals with both qualitative and quantitative methods. The scope of the present study is 1 225 nominalizations selected from “Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary” by A. S. Hornby [CD-ROM] (2005). The content of the communication is a situation, which does not refer directly to an extralinguistic reality which exists in the real world, but rather to the speaker’s conceptualization of it. The constituents of this conceptualization of reality are semantic functions: processes, participants and circumstances. The pivot of any situation is the process which is expressed by a verb. The following types of processes are distinguished: material, behavioural, mental, verbal, relational, and existential. When the process is...

Veiksmažodinių abstrakčių daiktavardžių semantinės ir sintaksinės funkcijos / Semantic and syntactic functions of deverbal abstract nouns

Šatienė, Salomėja 25 May 2005 (has links)
The present paper is an attempt to examine the functional potential of deverbal abstract nouns in the clause. The verbal to nominal transfer has long been recognized as an important phenomenon in English. However, the peculiarities of usage of deverbal abstract nouns as well as their potential for expressing a range of semantic and syntactic functions have been little analysed in linguistic literature. The paper examines the concept of deverbal abstract nouns as non-congruent representation of processes, provides an overview of semantic and syntactic functions in the clause, and presents a detailed inventory of the range of semantic functions expressed by deverbal abstract nouns and their syntactic realization in the clause based on the linguistic evidence drawn from the corpus under investigation. The research was based on the semantic approach for interpreting the clause as representation of a process suggested by systemic functional linguistics. The examination of the scientific discourse text determined that deverbal abstract nouns were used in clauses of all types of processes, the most frequent being material and relational types; the semantic potential of deverbal abstract nouns was not limited to specific semantic functions as they were used to perform a full range of semantic functions in the clause; the most frequent semantic roles expressed by deverbal abstract nouns were those of the Circumstance, the Carrier and the Affected; the syntactic potential of deverbal... Chmieliauskaitė, Jurgita 16 August 2007 (has links)
Das Hauptgewicht der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt auf dem reinen Flexionskasus Genitiv und der Beschreibung der Satzgliedfunktionen und der semantischen Funktionen des Genitivs in deutscher und litauischer Sprache. / Pagrindinis dėmesys šiame darbe yra skiriamas kilmininko linsniui be prielinksnių ir jo sintaksinių ir semantinių funkcijų aprašymui vokiečių ir lietuvių kalbose. / The main significance of this paper is attached to the Genitive without the prepositions and the description of its syntactical and semantic functions in German and Lithuanian.
