Amputation patients have a great deal more than just physical recovery to contend with
and the extent and scope of this condition is largely unknown in South Africa.
Rehabilitation programmes for amputees, specifically at state institutions are
characterised by lack of resources, lack of information provided to patients and the
patients themselves seem to experience lack of support on an emotional and
psychological level.
This study investigates the experience of self of the amputation patient through a review
of the literature available and from an ecosystemic-postmodernist viewpoint. In addition,
guided imagery is examined as a technique that could add value to rehabilitation
programmes for amputation patients.
Health care professionals in two state hospitals in Pretoria were interviewed by means of
semi-structured questionnaires to obtain additional information on current rehabilitation
programmes as well as the experience of the amputation and the subsequent process for
the amputee. Themes extracted from these questionnaires were used to design a
suggested rehabilitation programme. This programme, based on the findings of the
research, suggests certain enhancements to existing programmes and is focussed on
supporting the experience of the process for the amputee through inclusion of specific

The family as the basic unit of society plays an important role in the lives of individuals
especially children. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has devastated the family structure which is
already strained by other detrimental factors such as urbanisation and poverty. The
increased death rate of young parents due to AIDS-related diseases has led to an
escalating number of orphaned children growing in child headed households (CHH)
without adult care.
A qualitative study was undertaken to develop an understanding of the barriers that
hinder the integration of orphaned children into extended family folds and to obtain
suggestions on how to overcome these barriers. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews
were conducted in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province, with a sample of children
heading CHH, relatives of these children and social workers who were rendering social
work services to these client-systems.
The study revealed that the level of suffering faced by CHH began with the illness of the
parents. This was further exacerbated by the death of the parents as these children were
not absorbed by their extended families. Barriers that hindered the integration of
orphaned children into extended family folds go beyond the extended families’ economic
capacity to absorb the children. There is an interplay of barriers that are poverty related,
relational and family related, culturally related, circumstances that are related to the
orphaned children as well as limitations in social work service delivery.
The findings indicate that CHH is not a good option to care and protect orphaned children
as it exposes them to pervasive adversities with little resources and support. The
integration of orphaned children is embraced as a good option to care for the children
because of its potential value, amongst others, of enabling the extended families to
relieve the CHH from the burden of care. From the findings of this study, practice
guidelines were developed to enhance the efficacy of integrating orphaned children into
extended families to prevent the CHH phenomenon.

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of older caregivers of adult AIDS ill children in Umlazi Township in the province of Kwa- Zulu Natal. A qualitative research design which was exploratory was executed with a sample of purposively selected participants who are the members of the organization that provides support to the older caregivers.
Data saturation occurred after focus group and in depth individual interview with ten participants.
The findings revealed that older caregivers experience lot of challenges which ranges from emotional, physical, financial, psychological, social and time constraints when caring for their adult AIDS ill children .The study further revealed that older caregivers developed a wide range of coping strategies to face their challenging caregiving task and most of the older caregivers utilized positive coping strategies. This study outlines the results of an evaluation of programmes through a developmental quality assurance process within shelters for abused women and their children in Gauteng Province.
The survey obtained the attitudes and opinions of the social workers/social auxiliary workers and shelter managers towards their services.
The study reflects empirical findings as well as strengths and developmental areas within these shelters.
The results from the study indicate that shelters for abused women and their children are functioning well. However, the Minimum Standards for Shelters are not fully adhered to. Therefore, internal and external evaluations should be used by shelter managers to evaluate their own performance and to improve service delivery. / Social Work / MA(SS) (Social Work)

(Psychology of Education) / Although the human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is still very much a silent issue in South Africa, the AIDS pandemic has become a public problem which is threatening to a significant proportion of the population of South Africa (Heartbeat 2002:1; Kaseke and Gumbo 2001:53). HIV infections are on the rise and people are dying every day of AIDS related diseases (Msomi, 2000:8). Thus, the overall aim of this research was to determine how the HIV/AIDS orphans’/vulnerable children’ psychosocial status is affected by the HIV/AIDS disease.
The study was conducted in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province. A purposeful sampling was used because four (4) schools were suggested by the Department of Social Services in the Rustenburg Area due to their high populace with HIV/AIDS orphans. The other four (4) schools were suggested by the Auxiliary Services Division in the Bojanala Region of Education.
The literature revealed that failure on part of the parent, guardian and/or teachers to meet the psychological needs of the child at a certain stage in his/her development may result in personality disorders, which can become a potential danger and a source of unhappiness to the individual him/herself (cf. 2.5). Furthermore, it was evident from the literature that chronic parental illness may have a traumatic effect on young children because both parents may neglect a child (cf. 4.2). The literature also revealed that children should not be viewed as passive recipients of assistance, but as active participants who play a key role in the development of responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Receiving quality services is a right and a need not only of AIDS orphans, but also of all children (cf. 4.6).
From the quantitative data analysis, the following findings emerged, that HIV/AIDS orphans/vulnerable children are optimistic about their future. Children do not blame themselves for their parents’ death.
Arising from this research certain conclusions were drawn, recommendations were made and areas for possible future research were suggested. / Teacher Education

The central focus of this study is the role of the church as a faith-based organisation in dealing with unemployment.
Following an introductory chapter in which the research methodology and modus operandi are being explained, Chapter 2 is devoted to a discussion, in the light of recent literature, of the concept of unemployment and the effect of unemployment on the individual, the family and society. In Chapter 3 the discussion focuses on the involvement of faith-based organisations in addressing unemployment as part of social development.
In Chapter 4 the empirical survey, conducted by means of semi structured interviews with church leaders in the Paarl-Wellington-area, is described. The interpreted results are discussed in Chapter 5 according to main themes, sub themes and categories. A literature control is carried out simultaneously.
Based upon the literature study and the findings of the empirical survey, certain conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made in chapter 6. These recommendations are specifically aimed at activating the church in the form of local congregations to get actively involved in dealing with unemployment in their environment and community. / Social Work / D.Diac. This ethnography was undertaken in an AIDS hospice with the objective of understanding the functioning of the Centre holistically, including the experiences of the patients and the role of the Centre in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Organisational anthropology in a clinical setting involved gaining entry and rapport with the staff and patients. The methodology included interviewing and observation. The personnel structure and leadership of the Centre were explored, revealing communication, power and management relations that shape the organisational culture. The staff’s attitude towards their jobs and their commitment to assisting those suffering from AIDS revealed the underpinnings of the organisation. The care that patients receive at the Centre was examined along with adoption of the children and the effects of stigmatisation surrounding HIV/AIDS and its impact on patients and their families.
