Synthesis and characterisation of substituted smithsonite and calcite

Carbonate minerals play a very important role in nature, they represent some of the most diverse and common mineral species on the Planet. They are directly involved in the carbon dioxide (CO2) cycle acting as relatively stable long term chemical storage reservoirs, moderating both global warming trends and oceanaquatic chemistry through carbonate buffering systems. A range of synthetic metal carbonates have been synthesised for analysis under multiple experimental conditions, in order to study the variation in physical and chemical properties such as phase specificity, metal substitution, hydration/hydroxy carbonate formation under varying partial pressures of CO2 and thermal stability. Synthetic samples were characterised by a variety of instrumental analysis techniques in order to investigate chemical purity and phase specificity. Some of the techniques included, vibrational spectroscopy (IR/Raman), thermal analysis (TGA-MS) (thermal Raman), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy (SEM-EDX). From the instrumental characterisation techniques, it was found that single phase smithsonite, hydrozincite, calcite and nesquehonite could successfully be synthesised under the conditions used. Minor impurities of other minerals and / or phases were found to form under specific chemical or physical conditions such as in the case of hydrozincite / simonkolleite if zinc chloride was used during hydrothermal synthesis.

Frequency Synthesis for Cognitive Radio Receivers and Other Wideband Applications

The radio frequency (RF) spectrum as a natural resource is severely under-utilized over time and space due to an inefficient licensing framework. As a result, in-creasing cellular and wireless network usage is placing significant demands on the licensed spectrum. This has led to the development of cognitive radios, software defined radios and mm-wave radios. Cognitive radios (CRs) enable more efficient spectrum usage over a wide range of frequencies and hence have emerged as an effective solution to handle huge network demands. They promise versatility, flex-ability and cognition which can revolutionize communications systems. However, they present greater challenges to the design of radio frequency (RF) front-ends. Instead of a narrow-band front-end optimized and tuned to the carrier frequency of interest, cognitive radios demand front-ends which are versatile, configurable, tun-able and capable of transmitting and receiving signals with different bandwidths and modulation schemes. The primary purpose of this thesis is to design a re-configurable, wide-band and low phase-noise fast settling frequency synthesizer for cognitive radio applications. Along with frequency generation, an area efficient multi-band low noise amplifier (LNA) with integrated built-in-self-test (BIST) and a strong immunity to interferers has also been proposed and implemented for these radios. This designed LNA relaxes the specification of harmonic content in the synthesizer output. Finally some preliminary work has also been done for mm-wave (V-band) frequency synthesis. The Key Contributions of this thesis are: A frequency synthesizer, based on a type-2, third-order Phase Locked Loop (PLL), covering a frequency range of 0.1-5.4 GHz, is implemented using a 0.13 µm CMOS technology. The PLL uses three voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) to cover the whole range. It is capable of switching between any two frequencies in less than 3 µs and has phase noise values, compatible with most communication standards. The settling of the PLL in the desired state is achieved in dynamic multiple steps rather than traditional single step settling. This along with other circuit techniques like a DAC-based discriminator aided charge pump, fast acquisition pulse-clocked based PFD and timing synchro-negation is used to obtain a significantly reduced settling time A single voltage controlled LC-oscillator (LC-VCO) has been designed to cover a wide range of frequencies (2.0-4.1 GHz) using an area efficient and switch-able multi-tap inductor and a capacitor bank. The switching of the multi-tap inductor is done in the most optimal manner so as to get good phase-noise at the output. The multi-tap inductor provides a significant area advantage, and in spite of a degraded Q, provides an acceptable phase noise of -123 dBc/Hz and -113 dBc/Hz at an offset of 1 MHz at carrier frequencies of 2 and 4 GHz, respectively. Implemented in a 0.13 µm CMOS technology, the oscillator with ≈ 69 % tuning range, occupies an active area of only 0.095 mm2. An active inductor based noise-filter has been proposed to improve the phase-noise performance of the oscillator without much increase in the area. A variable gain multi-band low noise amplifier (LNA) is designed to operate over a wide range of frequencies (0.8 GHz to 2.4 GHz) using an area efficient switchable-π network. The LNA can be tuned to different gain and linearity combinations for different band settings. Depending upon the location of the interferers, a specific band can be selected to provide optimum gain and the best signal-to-intermodulation ratio. This is accomplished by the use of an on-chip Built-in-Self-Test (BIST) circuit. The maximum power gain of the amplifier is 19 dB with a return loss better than 10 dB for 7 mW of power consumption. The noise figure is 3.2 dB at 1 GHz and its third-order intercept point (I I P3) ranges from -15 dBm to 0 dBm. Implemented in a 0.13 µm CMOS technology, the LNA occupies an active area of about 0.29 mm2. Three different types of VCOs (stand-alone LC VCO, push-push VCO and a ring oscillator based VCO) for generating mm-wave frequencies have been implemented using 65-nm CMOS technology and their measured results have been analyzed

L’objectif de cette thèse est le développement et la validation d’un outil numérique permettant d’évaluer la performance d’un ouvrage de décantation. L’approche Euler-Lagrange est retenue pour la modélisation de l’écoulement et du transport solide. De nouvelles conditions d’interaction particule/paroi permettent de restreindre le dépôt aux zones présentant des caractéristiques géométriques et hydrodynamiques favorables. Le modèle numérique est confronté à quatre jeux de données expérimentales. L’ensemble de ces expérimentations permettent d’investiguer une large gamme des paramètres représentatifs de l’écoulement et du transport solide. La comparaison des résultats numériques et expérimentaux permet de conclure sur la capacité du modèle à prévoir l’abattement des particules dans un ouvrage de décantation avec une précision de l’ordre de 5 pourcents lorsque les dépôts ont lieu sur l’ensemble du fond et de 10 pourcents dans le cas de dépôts localisés dans des zones préférentielles. / The objective of this thesis is the development and the validation of a numerical tool to estimate the trapping efficiency of settlers. The Euler-Lagrange approach is chosen to simulate the flow and the sediment transport. New particle/wall interaction conditions are developed to take into account the geometric and hydrodynamic characteristics to enable the deposit. The numerical model is compared to four sets of experimental data. All these experiments enable to study a wide range of parameters that describe the flow and the solid transport. The comparison between the numerical and experimental results shows that the model is able to estimate the trapping efficiency of particles in a settler with an accuracy of about 5 percent when the particles settle all over the bed of the basin and about 10 percent in case of located deposits.

My diploma thesis deals with the issue revitalization of a small stream. Assessment and design of revitalization is done on Kuřimka stream which flows through the cadastral territory of the Moravian Knínice - Chudčice - Kníničky. In the diploma thesis were designed several of revitalization measures: stabilization of longitudinal tilt with the use of stone steps in the bottom and wooden thresholds, sedimentation reservoir for capturing sediment and slope stabilization using willow fences and gabions. Proposal of revitalization measures does not deteriorate runoff conditions.

Speeding up the settling of switched-capacitor amplifier blocks in analog-to-digital converters

Abstract The goal of this dissertation was to study and model the settling transient response of switched-capacitor (SC) circuit, which is the most important building block of Analog-to-Digital converters (ADCs), and to improve the settling performance of the SC circuit implemented in ADC in CMOS technology. In the design of the SC circuit, there are common obstacles in obtaining a precise and fast settling with low power consumption. The main contribution of this thesis is to speed up different SC circuits without adding extra power consumption or to achieve the required settling precision with low power consumption. Two solutions to reduce the power consumption of SC integrators in sigma-delta (SD) ADCs were designed and verified by simulations. These implementations are based on the passive charge redistribution technique by injecting a precalculated open-loop charge in the output of the first integrator. The injected charge was implemented either by a continuous function of the input and feedback voltages or by quantizing to three levels. In both cases, the idea is to minimize the initial transient voltage in the input of the first OTA and hence bypass the slewing of the OTA. Another approach was proposed for the traditional SC residue circuit of the pipeline ADC, where a load capacitor is connected to the output during the evaluation phase. Here, a pre-charge of the load capacitance can be used. One proposed implementation is called the continuously controlled pre-charged technique. It pre-charges the load capacitor to the proper voltage during the previous phase, connects the pre-charged load capacitor to the output of the OTA during the evaluation phase, and hence pulls the charge sharing so that the initial input step of the OTA is instantaneously minimized. The other implementation called the minimal pre-charged method implemented for the SC residue circuit of the pipeline ADC is to simply pre-charge the load capacitor with the fixed existing voltage, minimized the spread of the initial input voltage. This proposed technique did not require any additional active components. / Tiivistelmä Kytkettyihin kapasitansseihin (SC-tekniikka) perustuvat vahvistimet ovat CMOS-tekniikkaan perustuvien analogia-digitaalimuuntimien (AD-muunnin) tärkeimpiä osia. Tämän väitöstyön tavoitteena oli tutkia ja mallittaa SC-tekniikkaan perustuvien vahvistinpiirien asettumisaikaa, ja etsiä piiriteknisiä keinoja asettumisajan nopeuttamiseksi. SC-piirien suunnittelun suurimpia ongelmia on saavuttaa tarkka ja nopea asettuminen mahdollisimman pienellä tehonkulutuksella. Tämän työn päätuloksina on joukko keinoja, joilla voidaan nopeuttaa SC-kytkettyjen vahvistimien asettumista ilman että niiden tehonkulutusta lisätään, tai saavuttaa aiempi suorituskyky pienemmällä tehonkulutuksella. Menetelmät perustuvat siihen, että SC-piirin passiivista varausjakautumista ohjataan niin, että vahvistimen tulosolmussa oleva transientti minimoituu, jolloin vahvistin ei ajaudu virtarajoitteiselle toiminta-alueelle, vaan sen asettuminen nopeutuu merkittävästi. Sigma-delta-tyyppiset AD-muuntimet koostuvat SC-integraattoreista, ja näiden asettumisen nopeuttamiseen kehitettiin ja varmennettiin simuloiden kaksi tapaa. Varauksen jakautumista autettiin syöttämällä erillisellä varauspumpulla transkonduktanssivahvistimen lähtösolmuun tietty, integraattorin tilasta ja tuloista riippuva varaus. Tällöin vahvistimen tulossa näkyvä alkutransientti pienenee, ja vahvistin ei ajaudu virtarajoitteiselle toiminta-alueelleen, jolloin sen asettumisvirhe pienenee merkittävästi. Varausinjektio toteutettiin kahdella eri tavalla: laskemalla tarvittava varaus joko jatkuvana funktiona tulosignaaleista, tai approksimoimalla sitä muutamalla diskreetillä tasolla. Pipeline-tyyppisissä AD-muuntimissa peruslohko koostuu SC-kytketystä vahvistimesta, jonka kuormakapasitanssi on kytkettynä vahvistimen lähtöön asettumisen aikana. Tämän kapasitanssin esivaraaminen sopivasti tarjoaa hyvin yksinkertaisen keinon ohjata varausjakautumista niin, että vahvistimen tulossa oleva transientti saadaan minimoitua ja toiminta virtarajoitteisessa moodissa vältettyä. Tässäkin tapauksessa kehitettiin ja varmennettiin kaksi vaihtoehtoista toteutusta. Ensimmäisessä kuormakapasitanssin esivarausjännite lasketaan tulosuureiden jatkuvana funktiona erillisellä summausvahvistimella. Toisessa, hyvin minimalistisessa ratkaisussa esivaraukseen käytetään kolmea käytettävissä olevaa kiinteää jännitettä. Tämä menetelmä ei vaadi lainkaan ylimääräisiä aktiivikomponentteja.

Settling-Time Improvements in Positioning Machines Subject to Nonlinear Friction Using Adaptive Impulse Control

A new method of adaptive impulse control is developed to precisely and quickly control the position of machine components subject to friction. Friction dominates the forces affecting fine positioning dynamics. Friction can depend on payload, velocity, step size, path, initial position, temperature, and other variables. Control problems such as steady-state error and limit cycles often arise when applying conventional control techniques to the position control problem. Studies in the last few decades have shown that impulsive control can produce repeatable displacements as small as ten nanometers without limit cycles or steady-state error in machines subject to dry sliding friction. These displacements are achieved through the application of short duration, high intensity pulses. The relationship between pulse duration and displacement is seldom a simple function. The most dependable practical methods for control are self-tuning; they learn from online experience by adapting an internal control parameter until precise position control is achieved. To date, the best known adaptive pulse control methods adapt a single control parameter. While effective, the single parameter methods suffer from sub-optimal settling times and poor parameter convergence. To improve performance while maintaining the capacity for ultimate precision, a new control method referred to as Adaptive Impulse Control (AIC) has been developed. To better fit the nonlinear relationship between pulses and displacements, AIC adaptively tunes a set of parameters. Each parameter affects a different range of displacements. Online updates depend on the residual control error following each pulse, an estimate of pulse sensitivity, and a learning gain. After an update is calculated, it is distributed among the parameters that were used to calculate the most recent pulse. As the stored relationship converges to the actual relationship of the machine, pulses become more accurate and fewer pulses are needed to reach each desired destination. When fewer pulses are needed, settling time improves and efficiency increases. AIC is experimentally compared to conventional PID control and other adaptive pulse control methods on a rotary system with a position measurement resolution of 16000 encoder counts per revolution of the load wheel. The friction in the test system is nonlinear and irregular with a position dependent break-away torque that varies by a factor of more than 1.8 to 1. AIC is shown to improve settling times by as much as a factor of two when compared to other adaptive pulse control methods while maintaining precise control tolerances.
