The presented diploma thesis is devided into two parts. The theoretical part deals with types of milling, the choice of the cutters, choice of material of exchangeable cutting plates and also with types of wear and their classification. The second part of the thesis deals with experiments where the power load of the tool was measured. The observed data were processed and graphs of power load were created by software. Conclusions are based on these graphs.

Modular friction test rig for measuring torque and tension in threaded fasteners / Modulär friktionsrigg för mätning av moment och töjning i gängade fästelement

This report describes the development of a modular friction test rig for threaded fasteners. This device can measure the shank torque and the clamp force during the tightening of threaded bolts, with a size of M3-M14 and clamp length of 30-160mm. The design allows the use of several load and torque cells and the range is up to 100kN clamp load and 200Nm applied torque. The test rig will be used for research purposes by Atlas Copco to determine the frictional characteristics in tightening and will allow the experiments on bolts with several materials, coatings and surface finishes. This report concludes to a design proposal evaluated with analytical methods and a prototype 3D model that demonstrate the working principle of the test rig. The measurements are taken from custom-made sensors that are developed with high standards, are easily interchangeable and can be calibrated individually. In addition, a device is developed to allow the user to change the stiffness of the joint. Finally, a future recommendation is made to allow the measurement of the under-head torque. This proposal is a breakthrough compared to other test rigs, and will assist in verifying the friction measurements and having high precision results. / Denna rapport beskriver utvecklingen av en modulär friktionsprovrigg för gängade fästelement. Den utvecklade enheten kan mäta moment och klämkraft under åtdragning av gängade skruvar, med en storlek mellan M3 och M14 och klämlängd på 30-160mm. Designen möjliggör användning av flera last- och vridmomentceller och intervallet är upp till 100kN klämbelastning och 200Nm påfört vridmoment. Provriggen är en forskningsrigg, och den kommer att användas av Atlas Copco för att bestämma friktionsegenskaperna i åtdragning och möjliggöra experiment på skruvar av olika material, och med olika ytbeläggningar och ytbehandlingar. Denna rapport avslutas med ett designförslag, som utvärderas analytiskt och testprincipen demonstreras med hjälp av en prototyp. Mätningarna tas från skräddarsydda sensorer, som kan kalibreras individuellt och som är enkelt utbytbara. Evaluating the potential of aerial remote sensing in flue-cured tobacco

Flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a high value-per-acre crop that is intensively managed to optimize the yield of high quality cured leaf. Aerial remote sensing, specifically unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), present flue-cured tobacco producers and researchers with a potential tool for scouting and crop management. A two-year study, conducted in Southside Virginia at the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center and on commercial farms, assessed the potential of aerial remote sensing in flue-cured tobacco. The effort encompassed two key objectives. First, examine the use of the enhanced normalized difference vegetation index (ENDVI) for separating flue-cured tobacco varieties and nitrogen rates. Secondly, develop hyperspectral indices and/or machine learning classification models capable of detecting Phytophthora nicotianae (black shank) incidence in flue-cured tobacco. In 2017, UAV-acquired ENDVI surveys demonstrated the ability to consistently separate between flue-cured tobacco varieties and nitrogen rates from topping to harvest. In 2018, ENDVI revealed significant differences among N-rates as early as 34 days after transplanting. Two hyperspectral indices were developed to detect black shank incidence based on differences in the spectral profiles of asymptomatic flue-cured tobacco plants compared to those with black shank symptoms. Testing of the indices showed significant differences between the index values of healthy and symptomatic plants (alpha = 0.05). In addition, the indices were able to detect black shank symptoms pre-symptomatically (alpha = 0.09). Subspace linear discriminant analysis, a machine learning classification, was also used for prediction of black shank incidence with up to 85.7% classification accuracy. / Master of Science / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’s (UAVs) or drones, as they are commonly referred to, may have potential as a tool in flue-cured tobacco research and production. UAVs combined with sensors and cameras provide the opportunity to gather a large amount of data on a particular crop, which may be useful in crop management. Given the intensive management of flue-cured tobacco, producers may benefit from extra insight on how to better assess threats to yield such as under-fertilization and disease pressure. A two-year study was conducted in Southside Virginia at the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center and on commercial farms. There were two objectives to this effort. First, assess the ability of UAV-acquired multispectral near-infrared imagery to separate flue-cured tobacco varieties and nitrogen rates. Secondly, develop hyperspectral indices and machine learning models that can accurately predict the incidence of black shank in flue-cured tobacco. Flue-cured tobacco nitrogen rates were significantly different in 2017 from 59 days after transplanting to harvest using UAV-acquired near-infrared imagery. In 2018, heavy rainfall may have led to nitrogen leaching from the soil resulting in nitrogen rates being significantly different as early as 34 days after transplanting. The imagery also showed a significant relationship with variety maturation type in the late stages of crop development during ripening. Two hyperspectral indices were developed and one machine learning model was trained. Each had the ability to detect black shank incidence in fluecured tobacco pre-symptomatically, as well as separated black shank infested plants from healthy plants.

The Greatest Outrage: Military Park, Long Hospital, and Progressive Era Notions of Urban Space

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In 1911 Dr. Robert W. Long gave a gift of real estate to the state of Indiana and stipulated that the sale of the property would fund a teaching hospital for the Indiana School of Medicine. The state senator who sponsored the hospital bill suggested placing the proposed hospital within the boundaries of Military Park, the city’s oldest park. Indiana University trustees agreed, which led to Indianapolis Mayor Samuel Lewis Shank’s angry denunciation of the proposition as “one of the greatest outrages” proposed in recent years in Indianapolis. Three interested camps formed over the location of what became known as Long Hospital: the Indiana University trustees, who approved of placing the hospital in the park because of its proximity to downtown Indianapolis; lineage societies and veterans, who touted the park’s historical significance as a nationalistic message to all residents; and the state and city governments and local civic organizations, who promoted the health benefits of public parks and playgrounds. Through open debate, particularly in Indianapolis’ newspapers, each position supported Progressive era reform attitudes towards the use of civic space in terms of its relationships to public health, social morality, and nationalistic values.

Differences in Maximal Speed Running Between Baseball Players and Sprinters

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in technique between sprinters and baseball players while running at maximal speeds. 20 male NCAA Division I athletes participated; ten members of the track and field team specializing in the 100 m or 200 m sprint or the 100 m hurdles and ten members of the baseball team. Each subject performed a maximal effort 80 m sprint while their sprint times were recorded every 10 m starting at the 20 m mark. Each subject was filmed at they ran through a set10 m marking that included where they reached their top speed allowing the camera to capture at least one complete stride. By using the Peak Motus System, each subject's minimum knee flexion, minimum hip angle, knee extension at toe off, contact time, stride length, center of mass at touchdown and shank angle were measured. ANOVA with repeated measures found that sprinters and baseball players display significant differences in their sprinting technique in all variables except shank angle with the sprinters displaying a shorter 10 m split time. It was concluded that proper sprint training during baseball practice could prove to be beneficial to baseball players, however, further research would need to be conducted to support this claim.

The first aim of this master thesis was to summarize the information on injuries of ligamentous apparatus of an ankle, lateral instability of a talar joint, conservative and operative therapy of these injuries with the emphasis on physiotherapeutical procedures in the therapy of ankle sprains. The second aim of the master thesis was to introduce surface electromyography as a possibility to examine objectively the differences in the activation of foot and shank muscles with healthy people and people with chronic instability of an ankle in different postural situations. The third aim was to use the theoretical knowledge in practice with patients who have sprained their ankle and to make a subjective and objective assessment of the therapy effect which is in progress. Molecular Players in Preserving Excitatory-Inhibitory Balance in the Brain

Information processing in the brain relies on a functional balance between excitation and inhibition, the disruption of which leads to network destabilization and many neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders. One of the homeostatic mechanisms that maintains the excitatory and inhibitory balance is called synaptic scaling: Neurons dynamically modulate postsynaptic receptor abundance through activity-dependent gene transcription and protein synthesis. In the first part of my thesis work, I discuss our findings that a chromatin reader protein L3mbtl1 is involved in synaptic scaling. We observed that knockout and knockdown of L3mbtl1 cause a lack of synaptic downscaling of glutamate receptors in hippocampal primary neurons and organotypic slice cultures. Genome-wide mapping of L3mbtl1 protein occupancies on chromatin identified Ctnnb1 and Gabra2 as downstream target genes of L3mbtl1-mediated transcriptional regulation. Importantly, partial knockdown of Ctnnb1 by itself prevents synaptic downscaling. Another aspect of maintaining E/I balance centers on GABAergic inhibitory neurons. In the next part of my thesis work, we address the role of the scaffold protein Shank1 in excitatory synapses onto inhibitory interneurons. We showed that parvalbumin-expressing interneurons lacking Shank1 display reduced excitatory synaptic inputs and decreased levels of inhibitory outputs to pyramidal neurons. As a consequence, pyramidal neurons in Shank1 mutant mice exhibit increased E/I ratio. This is accompanied by a reduced expression of an inhibitory synapse scaffolding protein gephyrin. These results provide novel insights into the roles of chromatin reader molecules and synaptic scaffold molecules in synaptic functions and neuronal homeostasis.
