AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OFHaley M. Hutchins, for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Theater, presented on April 12th, 2024, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE MOST CHARMING MUSICAL EVER WRITTEN!: COSTUME DESIGNING SHE LOVES MEMAJOR PROFESSOR: Wendi R. Zea This thesis is a collection of ideas and information surrounding the process of designing the costumes for the musical She Loves Me. The musical production took place in the McLeod Theater at Southern Illinois University from February 29th-March 3rd, 2024. The musical was published in 1963 and is third adaptation of Miklós László’s play Parfumerie. The book was by playwright Joe Masteroff, music was by composer Jerry Bock, and lyrics by lyricist by Sheldon Harnick. Chapter 1 focuses on the research surrounding Budapest, Hungary in the 1930s, as well as a look into the history of romantic comedies and an analysis of the characters in the musical. Chapter 2 follows the process of designing the costumes from conception to final renderings. Chapter 3 documents the build and rehearsal process. Chapter 4 contains my reflection and pieces of feedback from my peers and mentors. Lastly, the appendices cover all relevant research, renderings, paperwork, and show photos.
