Déjà vu all over again! : the reluctant rise and protracted demise of Scott Lithgow Limited

This thesis charts the growth and demise of the two largest shipbuilding firms on the Lower Clyde in Scotland, Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Limited of Greenock, [established 1711 ] and Lithgows Limited of Port Glasgow [established as Russell & Company in 1874 and as Lithgows Limited in 1918]. The history of each firm is considered separately, with more emphasis on Lithgows, in order to give the reader a fuller perspective of their respective growth and internal and external dynamics. The bulk of the thesis, however, is concentrated in the post-1945 period with emphasis on the protracted merger of the shipbuilding interests of Scotts' and Lithgows to form Scott Lithgow Limited in 1970. Thereafter, the history of the merged firm is considered in detail, including its disastrous entry into the giant tanker market up to the nationalisation of the British shipbuilding industry in July 1977 when the firm was transferred to the control of the State Corporation, British Shipbuilders. From there, including an even more disastrous entry into the large offshore structures market, the period of nationalisation is then analysed up to March 1984 when Scott Lithgow became the first British Shipbuilders constituent shipyard to be privatised when it was controversially sold to the industrial conglomerate Trafalgar House plc. Trafalgar House, with no previous experience of building complex semi submersibles was unable to resurrect Scott Lithgow's tarnished reputation in the offshore market. Accordingly. the yard was put on a care and maintenance basis in 1988 from which it never recovered. In considering the complex history of Scotts' and Lithgows through what is in effect a micro study, it is hoped that this thesis will identify certain parallels in the demise of Scott Lithgow that will enhance our knowledge of cause and effect in the overall decline of the British shipbuilding industry.

Shipbuilding integration

The build cycle of a first in class combat ship takes about six years. During that timeframe, systems are being designed, installed, and tested, but, until the ship is in the water and tested at sea trials, it is not known if the ship is fully integrated and will actually work. As time progresses, integration problems become harder and more expensive to solve. Every time a new system is added or upgraded, there may be interference from another system that was not anticipated. It is important to test and verify each system, but there is limited time and resources to do so. By successfully planning and performing systems integration at the correct time of the acquisition cycle, it is possible to reduce the chance of system failure. This thesis explains and establishes a process for designing and building a fully integrated combat ship by first defining systems integration for the customer and the shipbuilder and explaining why performing systems integration is important.

Requirements are the cornerstone of all contracts for products and services. If requirements are not well defined and managed, the product or service may fail to meet the customer's needs and costs may go up. This is especially true in the shipbuilding industry where the customer has many requirements. Some are clearly defined while many more are undefined. Some requirements have to be generated from the implication of other requirements while even more have to be pulled from other industry or military standards. This amounts to hundreds or thousands of requirements. Without the proper tools, managing all these requirements would be next to impossible. This thesis investigates requirements management "Best Practices" and relate them to the needs of Systems Engineering in shipbuilding. This thesis also compares and analyzes several requirements management tools to see what may be the best fit for the shipbuilding industry in vessel design. This thesis provides recommendation of a specific requirements management tool and its suggested use.

Transitions in Medieval Mediterranean Shipbuilding: A Reconstruction of the Nave Quadra of the Michael of Rhodes Manuscript

The subject of shipbuilding in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages is an integral aspect of the maritime history of this region. Characterized primarily by a fundamental shift in shipbuilding techniques, this phase also included significant developments in other seafaring practices. Yet, unlike the preceding Byzantine era, there is a very limited body of archaeological evidence available for study which can be utilized to illustrate these changes. Therefore, one must turn to alternative sources of information regarding the construction of ships in the Mediterranean, such as iconography and literary evidence. Perhaps the most informative and useful example of the latter is the group of nautically-themed treatises and manuscripts composed between the 14th and 16th centuries. The earliest of these to describe ship construction in any detail is the 1434 manuscript of Michael of Rhodes, which will serve as the main subject of study for this thesis. The primary purpose of this research is to propose a reconstruction of the nave quadra described in the manuscript, though this will be preceded by explanations of several topics pertinent to ship construction in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. The discussion of such fundamental issues, like the transition from shell-based to frame- based construction and the concept of recording and conveying these processes in a didactic manner, is essential in providing a basis for this study. Once this foundation has been established, it will then be possible to present the reconstruction of the nave quadra of the Michael of Rhodes manuscript. With this background information laid out, the significance of both the manuscript and the nave quadra in the broader context of medieval seafaring in the Mediterranean should be discernable. In addition to the proposed reconstruction, this task of elucidating key aspects such as the transition from one construction technique to another and the compilation of written material on this subject will be essential to providing as comprehensive a picture of medieval seafaring in the Mediterranean as possible.

During the first two decades of the 17th century King Philip III (1598-1621) of Spain and Portugal launched an effort to standardize all shipbuilding in the Iberian Peninsula. These efforts of standardization constitute an important collection of information about Iberian shipbuilding practices of that period. This thesis will analyze the content of the three sets of ordinances, issued in 1607, 1613 and 1618, in the context of the history of the Iberian Peninsula, the regulation of the Carrera de Indias (Indies Trade), and Spanish shipbuilding practices based on written sources of that period.

Taiwan Yacht Industry Marching Forward in International Market Within this paper, the Taiwanese yacht industry is being evaluated from its past history to challenge and create its own history in the future. The past-present of Taiwanese yacht industry was being appraised, whether by its strengths and opportunities to emerge suddenly in the market, or even its weaknesses and upcoming threats to survive and conceivably to future itself in the top three of the dominants player in the market. Furthermore, the paper also assess the originality of yacht building worldwide, not to forget the present analysis of the yacht building industry worldwide, where it becomes the based comparison for the possibility of Taiwan yacht industry to enter the front-runner of this market worldly. The study findings show that even though Taiwanese yacht industry has been shockingly brought Taiwan into the top 10 yacht producers in the world in past four years, in case of its mega yachts, however, considering that there are some impediments, Taiwan yacht industry might not be able to enter the front-runner of this market worldly just yet. Therefore, it is suggested that issues related to the relationship between government and the yacht builders especially on the law and regulation wise, public support and yacht builders¡¦ internal premature management will need to be addressed to encourage the domestic yacht builders to compete internationally, considering that the market for yacht worldwide is growing even faster compared to the past-time.
