Modeling of Solid State Transformer for the FREEDM System Demonstration

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The Solid State Transformer (SST) is an essential component in the FREEDM system. This research focuses on the modeling of the SST and the controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) implementation of the SST for the support of the FREEDM system demonstration. The energy based control strategy for a three-stage SST is analyzed and applied. A simplified average model of the three-stage SST that is suitable for simulation in real time digital simulator (RTDS) has been developed in this study. The model is also useful for general time-domain power system analysis and simulation. The proposed simplified av-erage model has been validated in MATLAB and PLECS. The accuracy of the model has been verified through comparison with the cycle-by-cycle average (CCA) model and de-tailed switching model. These models are also implemented in PSCAD, and a special strategy to implement the phase shift modulation has been proposed to enable the switching model simulation in PSCAD. The implementation of the CHIL test environment of the SST in RTDS is described in this report. The parameter setup of the model has been discussed in detail. One of the dif-ficulties is the choice of the damping factor, which is revealed in this paper. Also the grounding of the system has large impact on the RTDS simulation. Another problem is that the performance of the system is highly dependent on the switch parameters such as voltage and current ratings. Finally, the functionalities of the SST have been realized on the platform. The distributed energy storage interface power injection and reverse power flow have been validated. Some limitations are noticed and discussed through the simulation on RTDS. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2014

Calibration of b-tagging efficiency and search for Dark Matter production in association with heavy flavour quarks with the ATLAS experiment.

Shcherbakova, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the most powerful and complex particle accelerator ever built. The ATLAS detector is a general-purpose particle detector at the LHC, designed to cover a wide range of physics measurements. This thesis presents two physics studies performed using data of proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS detector at √s = 8 TeV. The identication of jets originating from b quarks (b-tagging) is a crucial tool for many physics analyses at the LHC. A new technique to calibrate the efficiency of b-tagging algorithms using high transverse momentum jets is described. This technique allows to perform the calibration using jets with transverse momenta up to 1200 GeV, while the current calibration methods only reach approximately 300 GeV. The results of the calibration are presented.  The second study presented in this thesis is a search for Dark Matter (DM) production in association with a pair of heavy flavour quarks. A reinterpretation of the results of the ATLAS search for DM at √s = 8 TeV has been done based on simplied models. A set of simplied models with various DM masses, masses of the exchange particle, that mediates the interaction between DM and the regular matter, and couplings is considered. This study aims to choose benchmark models to be used in future searches at √s = 13 TeV. Additionally an accomplished technical project on the development of the b-tagging ATLAS software is presented.

Modélisation simplifiée des processus de laminage / Simplified modeling of rolling process

Le Dang, Huy 10 December 2013 (has links)
The initial aim of the thesis was to propose a new simplified model for rolling allowing a rapid calculation, if possible, in real time, so that the model would eventually integrate into a management tool production machines. This model should not neglect the elastic deformations in order to be applied to the study of phenomena associated with the change in bandwidth or flatness phenomena. It must also be open enough that we can integrate the description of microstructure of polycrystalline material and possibly take into account the deformation of rolling rolls. To achieve this goal, we proposed to build a simplified semi-analytical model of rolling. In this type of model, the gradient of global transformation can be multiplicatively decomposed of the first local transformation "plastic" which transforms the initial local neighborhood of in the relaxed configuration, and the second local transformation "elastic" which transforms the relaxed configuration in the current configuration. This decomposition is the basis of thermodynamic analysis of the mechanical evolution when the material undergoes large elastoplastic transformations, which provides the concepts of internal forces and necessary variable state to write this behavior. We showed two approaches to the analytical calculation of the mechanical fields when the history of was known in the neighborhood of particle .We then proposed to study a particular class of elastoplastic evolution that we called "simple radial" and we showed that the evolutions followed the principle of minimum energy. Finally, we conjectured that this principle can be extended in steady state, which allowed to build a simplified model of the rolling process

Measurements of luminosity and a search for dark matter in the ATLAS experiment

Pasuwan, Patrawan January 2020 (has links)
This licentiate thesis presents contributions to the luminosity measurement from the data recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2017 using a track-counting technique, as well as a search for dark matter in the ATLAS experiment using 139 fb-1 of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data delivered by the LHC from 2015 to 2018. Track-counting luminosity measurements in low-luminosity operations are performed to study the effect of low collision rates on luminosity determination. The luminosity measured in a calibration transfer procedure using the track-counting technique is used to correct the pile-up dependence observed in ATLAS’s main luminosity detector called LUCID. A search in the final state of a lepton, jets and missing transverse energy, where the final state is produced from a pair of top quarks and a spin-0 scalar/pseudoscalar mediator, is presented. A dedicated signal region is designed to target this final state in which the mediator decays into dark matter particles. The signal region covers the search in the mass plane of the mediator and the dark matter particle. Dedicated control regions are designed to estimate the top-quark background events, as well as the events where a Zboson is produced in association with the top quarks. The signal region event counts in the data have not been unblinded yet, but expected exclusion limits at 95% confidence level as a function of mediator mass are presented. Scalar and pseudoscalar mediators are expected to be excluded up to 200 and 250 GeV, respectively, for the dark matter mass of 1 GeV, and the coupling strengths of the mediator to the dark matter and Standard Model particles of 1.

Análise estrutural de edifícios de paredes de concreto por meio de pórtico tridimensional sobre apoios elásticos / Structural analysis of reinforced concrete wall buildings with three dimensional frame model on elastic supports

Testoni, Elias 27 November 2013 (has links)
This work aims at the investigation of the global effects caused by soil-structure interaction in reinforced concrete wall buildings on deep foundations. A simplified model is proposed for the linear structural analysis of reinforced concrete wall buildings with the exclusive use of beam finite elements. The proposed model includes the influence of the foundations deformability and the arch effect that occurs in concrete walls supported by beams or foundation elements. The effect of soil-structure interaction is simulated by applying stiffness coefficients in the supports of the structure. The stiffness coefficients are calculated by a computational tool developed in this work using an iterative process. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated by comparison of the results with a reference model that uses refined shell finite elements to represent the whole structure. Three reinforced concrete wall multi-story buildings subject to vertical loading were used as case studies in order to evaluate the influence of the soil-structure interaction in the structural behavior. The study concludes that the proposed simplified model is adequate to the structural analysis of reinforced concrete wall buildings with vertical loads studied in this work. The results indicate that the soil-structure interaction significantly modifies the stress flow in the buildings, causing significant redistribution of internal forces and should not be neglected in the design of the structure. It was also observed a reduction of the maximum values of settlements, and especially the differential settlements of the supports of the analyzed buildings.

Modélisation et étude numérique d'écoulements diphasiques : Modélisation d’un écoulement homogène équilibré : Modélisation des collisions entre gouttelettes à l’aide d’un modèle simplifié de type BGK / Modeling and numerical study of two phases flow

Champmartin, Aude 28 February 2011 (has links)
This thesis describes the modelisation and the simulation of two-phase systems composed of droplets moving in a gas. The two phases interact with each other and the type of model to consider directly depends on the type of simulations targeted. In the first part, the two phases are considered as fluid and are described using a mixture model with a drift relation (to be able to follow the relative velocity between the two phases and take into account two velocities), the two-phase flows are assumed at the equilibrium in temperature and pressure. This part of the manuscript consists of the derivation of the equations, writing a numerical scheme associated with this set of equations, a study of this scheme and simulations. A mathematical study of this model (hyperbolicity in a simplified framework, linear stability analysis of the system around a steady state) was conducted in a frame where the gas is assumed barotropic. The second part is devoted to the modelisation of the effect of inelastic collisions on the particles when the time of the simulation is shorter and the droplets can no longer be seen as a fluid. We introduce a model of inelastic collisions for droplets in a spray, leading to a specific Boltzmann kernel. Then, we build caricatures of this kernel of BGK type, in which the behavior of the first moments of the solution of the Boltzmann equation (that is mass, momentum, directional temperatures, variance of the internal energy) are mimicked. The quality of these caricatures is tested numerically at the end.

Zjednodušené počítačové modely prvků pro distribuci vzduchu / Simplified computer models of elements for an air distribution

Mishuk, Aliaksandra January 2018 (has links)
The goal of this master thesis is to create a simplified model of an actual swirl diffuser using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation, so that it would be easy to calculate (would have a simple geometry, a proper mesh and would enable quick definition of the model’s boundary conditions) and would also create an airflow pattern in space as close to reality as possible. In the process a CFD model with a certain geometry was created. Subsequently, various model settings were tested. Calculation results were compared with the results of the experimental measurement done using the PIV method.

Caractérisation expérimentale et modélisation des écoulements d’air et transferts thermiques dans un meuble frigorifique fermé / Experimental characterization and modeling of airflow and heat transfer in a closed refrigerated display cabinet

Chaomuang, Nattawut 16 September 2019 (has links)
The use of closed refrigerated display cabinets in supermarkets has been increased steadily because of the potential energy savings compared to open ones. This growing trend has contributed to the necessity to expand research in the field of retail refrigeration. Most studies in literature, however, focused on the improvements of energy efficiency after door installation while studies on the mechanism of heat transfer and airflow within closed display cabinets are still limited. In fact, the airflow pattern influences the heat exchange between air and products, thus, product temperature. This PhD thesis aims to gain an insight into the mechanism of airflow and heat transfer in closed refrigerated display cabinets by the implementation of experimental and numerical approaches.Experimental investigations were conducted in a closed refrigerated display cabinet (an integral type with a single band air curtain and two double-glazing doors) located in a controlled-temperature test room. Air/product temperatures and air velocity are the main parameters taken into investigations. Eighty calibrated thermocouples distributed throughout the cabinet made it possible to observe the spatial and temporal evolutions of the air and product temperatures under different operating conditions. These conditions were ambient air temperature (15, 19, 24 and 29 °C), product-occupied volume (unloaded, half-loaded and full-loaded with test packages made of methylcellulose), door-opening frequency (0 - permanently closed, 10, 20, 40, 60 Openings Per Hour - OPH) and opening duration (15s and 30s). An automatic door opening system was developed and allowed to apply the opening regime as prescribed in the standard test (EN ISO 23953-2, 2015). The experiment was also conducted in an open configuration of the cabinet (doors were completely removed) to determine the benefits of the doors on the temperature performance. The results showed that when the doors were permanently closed, the temperature distribution in the cabinet was similar whatever the ambient temperatures and occupied-volume percentages – the highest temperature position at the front-top shelf and the lowest temperature position at the rear-bottom shelf. The temperature distribution changed when the doors were periodically or permanently open – the front of the middle shelf became the highest temperature position while the lowest temperature position remained at the rear-bottom shelf. However, the air and product temperatures in the cabinet with doors remained lower despite a very high door-opening frequency (i.e. 60 OPH, product temperatures at least 1.0 °C lower), compared to the case without doors.Air velocity measurement using a hot-wire anemometer at the front of the cabinet from the discharge to the return air grilles allowed to observe the shape of the air curtain, while the measurement in the rear duct allowed to quantify the air flow distribution over the perforated back panel of different shelves. The use of a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique allowed the characterization of the air curtain with higher spatial resolution and accuracy. The result showed a zone of air recirculation at the upper part of the cabinet where warm ambient air infiltration through the door gaps was also observed, leading to an increase in the air curtain temperature. A 2D-CFD k-ε turbulence model was developed to reproduce the main flow phenomena observed by PIV so that its influence on the internal temperature distribution can be examined. Finally, a simplified heat transfer model was developed based on a zonal approach in both static and dynamic regimes which permits, respectively, the predictions of time-averaged air and product temperatures and temperature fluctuations according to the on/off cycle of the compressor regulation. The dynamic model was solved with a spectral approach, thus the influence of different parameters on the damping of the temperature fluctuations can be identified.
