Rifles, residents, and runaways: the conflict over slavery between civil and military authority in Maryland, 1861-1864

Unknown Date (has links)
In the fall of 1864, Maryland became the first Border State to abolish slavery with the adoption of a new state constitution. In order to best understand the evolution of this event, the purpose of this study was to examine the civil-military relations of Maryland during the Civil War and how these relations affected the institution of slavery in the state. Therefore, the main argument is that the conflict between military and civil authorities in Maryland during the war revealed two points: first, that the federal government maintained a faithful vigilance over the state during the war and second, that the federal government exploited a fading slavery system to not only eliminate any possibility of Maryland entering the Confederacy, but also destroy any degree of Border State neutrality. / by Brian Thomas Dunne. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Hirszman, Maria Lafayette Aureliano 11 October 2011 (has links)
The aim of this work is to examine, from a multidisciplinary approach (aesthetic, historical and anthropological), images of black slaves and black wage earners made by the Azorean photographer Christiano Jr. in mid of the 1860\'s in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose is to emphasize their contradictory character when placed in a long-term perspective. Even without breaking with the aesthetic standards of the period, the pictures of Christiano Jr. introduce elements that represent a differentiation as they subvert certain thematic and compositional structural aspects of images of black labors, thus breaking the code of silence, concealment and disguise that characterizes the relationship between the Brazilian society and the system of slavery. The work develops in three movements. The first chapter presents a detailed analysis of the work of Christiano Jr. highlighting his career and the system of consumption and circulation of his images. The second features the traditional patterns of representation of the figure of the black working classes relating them with the pictures of Christiano Jr. The last chapter stresses a kind of fissure in the strict code of the iconographic representation of the slaves and proposes that the work of the azorean photographer be read not as a neutral document about the uses and customs of the time or only as a reiteration of a biased look, but as a record of a complex relationship between the photographer and his models as a constituent component - therefore charged with meaning - of a society that was itself grappling in an acute crisis of the slavery regime.

The search for the slave ship Meermin : developing a methodology for finding inter tidal shipwrecks

Boshoff, Jaco Jacqes 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa / This thesis describes the development of a methodology to find inter tidal shipwrecks. The discussion revolves around finding a particular shipwreck – that of the Dutch slaver Meermin. The story of the revolt on the Meermin helps to focus the search and development of the methodology to find inter tidal shipwrecks as the Meermin was wrecked in this zone. The thesis contextualises the search and the story by discussing not only maritime archaeology in South Africa, but also looking at slave ship archaeology and the history of slavery at the Cape. One of the key techniques for finding shipwrecks is the use of magnetometers. The discussion defines the types of magnetometers available to archaeologists and how magnetometry was applied during the search for the Meermin. This inevitably includes an examination of the shipwrecks wrecked in the area of the Meermin episode as well as the way this region has changed over time. The results of the magnetometer searches (which included airborne, handheld and marine magnetometers) are discussed as well as the ground truthing of the results. The latter involved excavation and the development of excavation strategies, and excavation results are scrutinized. In the final analysis the search for the Meermin is further contextualised by considering the various impacts the project has had in other spheres.

January 2010 (has links)
Concluiu-se que as ações judiciais foram requeridas por indivíduos originários dos vários segmentos sociais, que o custo da tramitação das ações restringia a formalização dos crimes, que os processos geralmente ficavam inconclusos, e que a justiça catalogou uma gama variada de crimes / Abstract: This study aims to analyze the types and characteristics of the conflicts - violents or non - experienced by the population of the town of São Sebastião do Ribeirão Preto (currently the area that covers the municipalities of Ribeirão Preto, Sertãozinho and Cravinhos), within the historical context that corresponds to the end of slavery, and the transition of economics practices of local and regional supply and early impacts of the coffee production and railroad. The period corresponds to 1874, when the town became politically and legally autonomous in relation to the town of São Simão and 1888, last year of the slavery system in Brazil. The search was based on documentary census population of 1872 and 1886 (completed in 1874 and 1887, respectively, in the province of Sao Paulo) and judicial processes located in public archive of Ribeirão Preto: criminal processes of free and captive population, freedom of slaves processes and guardianship of children of slaves. It was concluded that the lawsuits were required by individuals from various social segments, that the cost of functioning of actions restricted the formalization of crimes which processes generally were inconclusive, and that justice catalogued a variety of crimes / Mestre
