Thesis (M.A. (African languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2004. / In this research an attempt has been made to assess, evaluate and examine the role of chiefs as characters in Matsepe's novels. The need for this study was found to be necessary because no in-depth study of the role of chiefs in Matsepe's novels has as yet been undertaken. This study demonstrates how Matsepe portrays chiefs as characters in his novels, what their duties are and how they help in developing his themes.

This collection explores various aspects of Indonesian culture. From remote government settlements off the coast of Sumatra to the urbanized and commercial beaches of Bali, these stories take a look at the complexities, differences and adjustments felt by people of both the East and West. An attempt has been made to detail confusion, frustration, disorientation, struggles, prejudices, misunderstandings as well as epiphanies without Orientializing (to borrow Edward Said's term) various ways of life within the archipelago. To most fairly convey the intricacies and differences between the broad generalities of the two cultures, multiple voices and points of view are incorporated. Americans, a Scottish citizen, and of course, Indonesians are all given significant space here--displaying both intolerant and tolerant notions--in order to maintain the humanity and dignity of all cultures and worldviews involved.

Funded by Nellis Air Force Base (NAFB), my thesis research and analysis examined Native American knowledge of heritage foods and how diminished access to food resources has affected Native American identity and health. NAFB manages the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), land and air space in southern Nevada, which includes Native American ancestral lands. During a research period of 3 months in the spring/summer of 2012, I interviewed members of Native American nations culturally affiliated with ancestral lands on the NTTR, the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah (PITU) and the Bishop Paiute Tribe. My research included participant observation and 31 interviews with tribal members considered knowledge holders by tribal leaders. In dialogue with the literature of the anthropology of food, political economy, and Critical Medical Anthropology, my analysis focused on the role of heritage foods in everyday consumption, taking into account the economic, social, environmental, and political factors influencing heritage foods access and diet. My work explored the effects of structural forces and rapid changes in diet and social conditions on Native American health. I found shifts in concepts of food-related identity across ethnic groups, tribes, ages, and genders. I also found evidence of collective efforts to improve diet-related health at tribal and community levels. Through the applied aspects of my research, participants and their families had the opportunity to share recipes and food dishes containing heritage foods as a way to promote human health and knowledge transmission.

The purpose of this study is to apply a developmental model of intercultural sensitivity to a group of people in an intercultural setting and discover whether or not the model is descriptive. The data collected are also used to determine whether or not the coping mechanisms employed by the sojourners are developmental in terms of this model of intercultural sensitivity.

The diploma thesis entitled "Stories of Women with the Mark" Green Widow "in Addictology Perspective aims to use semi-structured interviews to map the relationship between substance use and moving to a satellite town of selected ten respondents who meet the fixed criteria that are as follows : well-socio-economically-dependent women (higher social status of the family, good income and permanent employment of the spouse) living in satellite towns of large cities, the financial side of the family is occupied by a busy husband, women spend most of their time without their spouse go to work and some form of addictological or psychiatric history. Furthermore, this thesis aims to find common recurring life themes and behaviors in the given women. At present, the topic of green widows is becoming the current one, especially in the growing suburbanization of Czech cities, even in the field of addictology, where the literature or research conducted is not adequately described. The theoretical part is devoted to risk factors that can threaten green widows such as overuse of drugs or alcohol, but also feelings of loneliness, isolation from the environment, infidelity or abandoned nest syndrome. Em levantamentos realizados no acervo do Centro de Arqueologia de São Paulo, nas coleções relativas aos sítios arqueológicos localizados na região do triângulo histórico de São Paulo e adjacências, foram identificadas 29 contas de vidro e de material orgânico em três contextos do século XIX: a Praça das Artes, o Solar da Marquesa de Santos e a Casa n.°1. Através da análise das técnicas de produção, são levantadas informações sobre cronologia e origem desses artefatos. Em uma pespectiva contextual global, essas miçangas dialogam com outras de contextos africanos ou da diáspora africana, tal como o Cais do Valongo, no Rio de Janeiro e Kindoki, no Congo. São Paulo no século XIX era uma cidade com forte presença da população africana. Eles estavam nas ruas, praças, pontes, chafarizes, mercados e igrejas, com seus batuques e capoeiras, formando verdadeiros territórios negros através de materialidades, identidades e agências. As contas e miçangas delimitavam hierarquias sociais internas a esses grupos e participavam da construção da paisagem negra da cidade de São Paulo. / The Archaeological Center of São Paulo have collections related to archaeological sites located in the region at the São Paulo downtown and its surroundings. Between them, 29 glass and organic beads were identified in three 19th century contexts: the Praça das Artes, the Solar da Marquesa de Santos and the Casa n.1. Through the analysis of the production techniques, information about the chronology and origin of these artifacts is collected. From a global contextual perspective, these beads dialogue with others from African or African diaspora contexts, such as the Cais do Valongo in Rio de Janeiro and Kindoki in the Congo. São Paulo in the 19th century was a city with strong presence of African population. They were in the streets, squares, bridges, fountains, markets and churches, with their batuques and capoeiras, shaped the territories black through materialities, identities and agencies. The beads and miçangas delimited social hierarchies internal to these groups and participated in the construction of the black landscape of the city of São Paulo.
