Enacting Boundaries through Social Technologies : The Dance between Work and Private Life

Siegert, Steffi January 2015 (has links)
Social technologies have become ubiquitous. As technology in one shape or form infiltrates all areas of life, naturally there are consequences for individuals and organisations. Consequences arise when organisations implement technologies voluntarily but also when the employees use technologies to connect working life and private life in unforeseen ways. Platforms such as Facebook or Twitter enable boundary blurring and crossing, thus allowing the coming together of different areas of life. The concept of boundary work allows one to explore how people address the many challenges that arise as a result of using social technologies partly for work and partly for private purposes. The qualitative study design, complete with interviews and online observations of Facebook and Twitter, employed in this research helps to explore two research questions. Firstly, how do particular affordances of social technologies affect the blurring of boundaries between work and private life? Secondly, how do employees in non-governmental organisations enact boundaries between work and private life, with and in spite of social technologies? The analysis shows that the particular affordances of social technologies, visibility, persistence and association increase boundary permeability and blending. The concept of boundary work is developed further by distinguishing offline and online boundary work. With the omnipresence of social technologies, it does not suffice purely to use offline boundary work, as people develop a variety of online boundary work tactics, too. The results indicate that challenges for employees are no longer restricted simply to boundaries between work and private life, but they are also expanding into the boundaries between the public and private spheres. As a consequence, this study suggests that many online representations exist, and organisations would gain substantially from understanding the differences between them, in order to better address changing conditions.

Martins, Josué Schneider January 2018 (has links)
Food production from socio-biodiversity is a thematic area that involves Food Security, Food Safety and Agroecology, as they make up the search for socially just, environmentally sustainable and economically viable development. In this sense, Brazilian native fruits such as açaí Juçara (Euterpe edulis) and different butia’s species (such as Butia catarinenses, BC, and Butia yatay, BY) are important, since they have both nutritional and cultural importance. Thus, this dissertation is the result of the Extension’s Project Monitoring of the Quality of Native Fruits, whose participative development allowed the accomplishment of academic research from the productive demands listened by extensionists, producers and technicians. Research results were presented in the form of 6 scientific papers. The first article evaluated how different forms of processing observed in technical visits can influence the physical-chemical parameters of BC pulps. From the preparation of pulps with or without the use of water and using two types of sieve (1 mm and 1.5 mm pores) it was possible to identify the variation of extraction yields among 35.9% and 92.9% . In the second work the comparison between different açaí products available in the local market was carried out. From the results it was possible to identify significant chemical differences among the products, such as the great sugar addition and the presence of additives in the ultraprocessed products, as well as the higher content of anthocyanins in the açai Juçara’s pulp produced in an artisanal way among all eight products analyzed. In the third work the nutritional variation in the process of transformation of the fruit to the BY pulp was evaluated. The results suggest that there is significant nutritional variation in the pulp process, as there was a reduction of dietary fibers (47.9%) as well as an increase in the relative amounts of lipids (84.8%). The fourth work aimed to adapt the technology of the Ford cup viscometer to standardize the açaí Juçara’s pulp, according to the legislation, using a correlation between flow time and the respective total solids content of the pulp. The method studied showed a significant correlation between the analyzed factors. In the fifth work, rheological parameters were correlated to total solids contents of six samples of açai Juçara’s pulps. The study suggests that there is a direct correlation between these factors, reinforcing the hypothesis of inferring the classification of the pulp from its viscosity. The sixth work sought to study the pasteurization of butia juices. It was identified that the optimal conditions of peroxidase enzymatic activity (POD) of BC and BY, (pH 4.5 and 45ºC). In this paper, the pasteurization time and temperature pairs suitable for POD inactivation of BC juices (80 ° C / 0 minute) and BY (80 ° C / 10 minutes) were also determined for different juice formulations. At the end of this set of works, it was possible to verify the synergy between the actions of Research and Extension. It was identified that the rapprochement between family ecologist producers, university research sectors, State agents and rural extension technicians was fundamental for the choice of research problems, the search for improvements and solutions of agroecological technological processes.

The Relationship Between Student Use of Socially Interactive Technology and Engagement and Involvement in the Undergraduate Experience

Ericson, Brent Eric January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Karen Arnold / Traditional aged college students currently enrolled at institutions of higher education have never known a time without technology and through social media, can interact and engage with one another regardless of physical space. Technology provides fast, easy, efficient, and constant means of communication, and students use social media while simultaneously engaging in campus activities. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student use of socially interactive technology (SIT) and engagement and involvement in the undergraduate experience. Social media included in this study refers to cell phones, text messaging, Instant Messaging, email, and social networking sites (SNS). Borrowing items from the Net Generation Survey and the National Study for Student Engagement (NSSE) an instrument was created to analyze time dedicated to technology, use by demographics, technology as a predictor student of engagement, as well as qualitative data. Results from 154 participants show that students use technology for approximately eight hours per day, male students in the sample are overrepresented at the lowest levels of social media use, and social media types are correlated with one another. Following a factor analysis on the independent technology items and the dependent engagement items, regression analyses were employed to explore this relationship. Qualitative data illustrate that technology use can distract students from academic activities, and limits interpersonal communication. Conversely, it is beneficial in that students are constantly updated on class discussions, campus events, and with peers and family. Given these findings, because of students' frequent use of technology while engaged or involved in campus activities, concerns regarding the quality of these experiences are discussed. Additionally, redefining the traditional meaning of campus involvement is appropriate. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College.

Araújo, Alexandre Castilhos de January 2015 (has links)
The transformations promoted by technological innovations within traditional sectors of the economy offer significant breakthrough for modern society. However, much of the implemented technological projects unleash new levels of productivity that generate a legion of excluded people that fails to return to the formal economy in occupations that require a more sophisticated level of training. Thus, arises the challenge to develop new models of development in order to equalize the impacts regarding much of the technological innovations in the traditional sectors of the economy from a governance approach on social technologies associated with sustainability. Therefore, this work aimed to answer the question: how governance in social technologies can be linked to sustainability in order to constitute a new approach that can serve as a reference and also help to reverse the situation of the population exposed to social and economic risk? The purpose of this research aimed at the development of a governance approach to social technologies, considering the multilevel perspective, in order to make more effective the process of including a legion of people that lacks new opportunities within a technological scenario of social order, in which can develop regional, existing or new, vocations, and social technologies to establish a new paradigm associated to sustainability involving vulnerable economies. To achieve this goal, two steps have been proposed involving secondary and primary data. The first was to perform a qualitative, exploratory research, from an initial theoretical background involving concepts from the perspective of governance, sustainability, and the impact from the adoption of governance in social technologies. Thus, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two groups: i) institutions working with governance in social technologies and ii) institutions formulating public policies in social technologies. This step sought to analyze initiatives and models developed in Brazil, under the governance focus on social technologies, in order to identify the factors that positively influence regional projects, the factors that interfere in the progress of projects and proposals for action at the national level aimed at developing social technologies that generate sustainable impacts in the spheres of social, economic and technological developments. The second step consisted in the analysis of the results obtained from the exploratory research in order to organize them to propose the governance approach to social technologies. This approach followed the concepts in governance to develop better public policies and strategies, playing an important role in improving the quality of life of vulnerable populations. The governance perspective for building models which can foster social technologies is a new, relevant, challenging proposal, offering many opportunities for social inclusion and making it present as an essential advantage for the successful identification of solid proposals for the research advance on the subject.

The Limits of Law as Technology for Environmental Policy: A Case Study of the Bronx Community Paper Company

Cato, Mary E. 28 September 1996 (has links)
This thesis examines environmental law as a social technology, using approaches from science and technology studies, including methods for studying controversies as well as actornetwork and technology transfer concepts. Legal technologies, including statutes, regulations, and lawsuits, have become significant participants in United States environmental policy. That policy developed during the twentieth century in response to contrasting concerns about nature (development of natural resources vs. protection of native species and wilderness), along with growing concern about urban environmental issues (such as air and water quality, and waste disposal). The environmental movement that began after World War II gained power with provisions incorporated into 1970s environmental legislation allowing citizens to sue polluting industries and corporations. Opposition to environmentalism developed in the 1980s, as wise use and property rights movements seeking to expand development of natural resources, and an environmental justice movement concerned with issues and constituencies not addressed by mainstream environmental organizations. As a result of that opposition, the environmental movement in the United States has strengthened, and broadened both the memberships in varied organizations and the range of issues addressed. A case study of the Bronx Community Paper Company provides an example of the current state of environmental law and policy in the United States, and the limited ability of legal technologies to resolve increasingly complex environmental controversies. / Master of Science

Tecnologia Social como facilitadora para tratamento de esgoto em área rural / Social Technology as a facilitator for the sewage treatment in rural área: Municipality of Pouso Alegre - MG

Ramos, Michelle de Fatima 12 April 2017 (has links)
According to data from the last Brazilian census, 2010, about 29.9 million people live in rural areas, totaling approximately 8.1 million households. As rural households are often dispersed, and even in the most concentrated areas there is no sewerage network, households often resort to alternative solutions to sanitary sewage, often inadequate, such as the use of rudimentary septic tanks, at 49.9 per cent of Rural households, and other forms in 7.4 per cent of rural households, totaling 57 per cent of rural households. Some alternatives for the treatment of sewage are seen being implanted in rural areas, through social technologies. Among them, we can highlight the septic tanks biodigestoras, which were developed by EMBRAPA. Such technologies have been implemented in some Brazilian rural communities, highlighting the case of the rural communities of Afonsos and Cantagalo, belonging to the municipality of Pouso Alegre - MG. This research has the objective of analyzing how the process of implantation of the biodigestors in these districts occurs and verify if they, in fact, fulfill the role of facilitators for the treatment of sewage in rural area of the municipality of Pouso Alegre - MG. For this purpose, qualitative research was carried out, through documentary and bibliographic surveys, semi-structured interviews, transcription analysis and data categorization. For data categorization and analysis, a bibliography on Social Technology (TS) was used. Although the results show little participation of the residents in the decision making process on the use of technology, there is great influence and credibility in the proposals made by the local NGO, favoring the current interventions, which also allowed the inclusion of the TS as a public policy, if approved The Municipal Sanitation Basic Plan

However, the reality experienced by these professionals is characterized as unhealthy due to poor infrastructure and lack of technologies to develop their activities, favoring a danger scenario a nd exposure to occupational hazards and damage to health. This work aimed to evaluate, develop and implement technological and infrastructure alternatives to reduce occupational hazards in the professional practice of waste pickers linked to ARENSA, Campina Grande-PB. The participant survey was conducted from October 2014 to December 2015 with 16 waste pickers associated with ARENSA (Waste Pickers Association of Community Nossa Senhora Aparecida) operating in Campina Grande-PB. It found the frequency and severity of physical risks (exposure to sunlight and temperature changes), chemical (dust, smoke) biological (exposure to microorganisms and macrovetores), ergonomic (intense physical effort, lifting and manual transport weight; requirement of poor posture, prolonged use of voice, conflict and stress) and accidents (fires; sharps; landslides bags of pedestrian accidents and falls). To reduce the source of the danger and minimize risks to improving the working environment were developed three social technologi es: a collapsible cart for collection of solid waste with dimensions 100x120x150cm, dry weight 55 kg; a trolley platform for transport bags and bales during screening for packaging measuring 100x120x480cm and support for 350 kg; a dimension in sorting table 200x100x100cm and 20 cm depth. The technologies were developed with the participation of workers and observing the dynamics of work and ergonomic parameters in order to reduce the physical effort of the group. One can gauge the effectiveness in mitigating the ergonomic and accidents with lifting and carrying weight reduction, lower demand for improper posture and aggravating diseases physical health of the worker. To reduce accidents by trampling have changed the uniforms with reflective fabric application (NBR 15292/2013), peaked at other positive impacts, such as professional development. Besides the acquisition of personal protective equipment (boots, gloves, rain gear, protective cap and Arabic glasses) enabled the worker protection with regard to exposure to physical, chemical, biological. So the alternatives applied favored the reduction of occupational hazards, contributing to the implementation of activities and the appreciation of the profession waste pickers.

These professionals often perform daily activities in unsanitary conditions and without equipment that enhance the work of scavenging. The development and provision of social technologies can configure how timely strategy to change this scenario. In this perspective, the present study aimed to develop, investigate and implement technologies that optimize the collection, transport and segregation of solid waste collected by waste pickers associated with ARENSA (Association of collectors of recyclable materials from the community Nossa Senhora Aparecida) in Campina Grande-PB. The participant and experimental research was carried out from January 2013 to July 2014, with seven collectors of recyclable materials associated with ARENSA. At first run was surveying the conditions of the technologies used by the pickers of recyclable materials, to further develop, investigate and implement technologies for collection, transport and sorting of waste, considering the principle of social technology and ergonomic parameters. Two vehicles for collection and transportation of waste collected and sorting a table, three technologies were developed. The vehicles were developed based on the need of the group, respecting the ergonomic shape parameters that reduce the physical effort throughout the workday, through the deployment of appropriate wheels, braking system and safety items, toiletries kit, optimization of work , using apertures that facilitate the entry and exit of materials and fit the receptor for screening table, avoiding the physical wear. The empty vehicle weighs 86 kg with a capacity to transport 180 kg of waste, representing 39% increase in monthly income, comparing to the same period of 2013 (January-May). The receiving table was made of durable and lightweight, collapsible material, due to lack of physical space, with measures tailored to users. Holds six workers while doing screening of up to 360 kg of waste at once. The technologies of transport and sorting of solid waste study allowed better working conditions, reduce negative impacts on health, contributed to the increase in the monthly income of recyclable materials associated with ARENSA and favored the gathering and sorting of more waste (12%) . Therefore, it is essential to invest in targeted for professional practice of recyclable materials in order to facilitate the realization of the National Policy on Integrated Management of Solid Waste and socioeconomic integration of waste pickers social technologies.
