Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An exploratory study was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the
emotions and emotional experiences of alcoholics and chemically dependent adults.
The study was also conducted to explore the theoretical field of music therapy and
determine how music can be utilized to social group work with alcoholics and
chemically dependent adults. The exploratory study was also conducted to determine
how many knowledge social workers have about music therapy, and to what extent
they believe it can practically be used in social group work with alcoholics and
chemically dependent adults.
The researchers' interest in group work and the importance of the use of creative aids
during group work is the motivation for this study. The aim of the study is thus to
establish guidelines for the use of music in social group work in order to provide
effective intervention for alcoholics and chemically dependent adults.
The most general personality traits, emotions, defence mechanisms, communication
and motivational problems of alcoholics and chemically dependent adults, have been
enclosed in the literature study. The corresponding principles, goals and intervention
processes of group work and music therapy was also highlighted. Focus was
especially placed on the corresponding functions of group work and music namely the
handling of defence mechanisms, the exploration and expression of emotions, the
improvement of communication, the development of a positive self-esteem,
socialisation and the facilitation of personal motivation. The value of group work and
music in the addressing of alcoholics' and chemically dependent adults' problems and
needs, has been investigated because of the specific corresponding functions of group
work and music.
The umversum IS social workers at institutions that make use of group work
interventions in their treatment programmes for alcoholics and chemically dependent
adults. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was used,
namely structured interviews as well as structured questionnaires. The results of this study generally confirmed the findings of the literature study. The recommendations
can be divided into three areas namely recommendations concerning policy,
programmes and training of social workers, recommendations concerning the
corresponding functions of group work and music, and recommendations concerning
future research. The importance of further research in the testing of the value of music
in group work for specific client groups was especially recommended. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Verkennende studie is in hierdie ondersoek geïmplimenteer ten einde die aard en
omvang van volwasse dwelmafhanklikes se emosies en emosionele belewenisse te
beskryf, 'n teoretiese verkenning van musiekterapie te doen en dit in verband te bring
met maatskaplike groepwerk, en te bepaal in watter mate musiek tydens groepwerk
met volwasse dwelmafhanklikes toegepas kan word. Die verkennende studie is ook
geïmplimenteer om te bepaal in watter mate maatskaplike werkers kennis oor
bogenoemde vorm van intervensie het en in watter mate hulle van mening is dat die
benutting van musiek in groepwerkprogramme vir dwelmafhanklikes in inrigtings
uitvoerbaar is. Die motivering vir hierdie studie het na vore gekom weens die
navorser se belangstelling in kreatiwiteit in die uitvoer van maatskaplike groepwerk.

inrigtingsverband te lewer.
Die literatuurstudie het die algemene persoonlikheidstrekke, emosies, verdedigingsmeganismes,
kommunikatiewe en motiveringsprobleme van dwelmafhanklikes ingesluit.
Die gemeenskaplike beginsels, doelstellings en intervensieproses van groepwerk
en musiekterapie is ook in die literatuurstudie uitgelig. Daar is veral gefokus op die
gemeenskaplike funksies van groepwerk en musiek naamlik die hantering van verdedigingsmeganismes,
die eksplorering en uitdrukking van emosies, die bevordering
van kommunikasie, die ontwikkeling van 'n positiewe selfbeeld, sosialisering en die
fasilitering van persoonlike motivering. Weens die spesifieke gemeenskaplike funksies
van groepwerk en musiek, is daar besluit om die waarde van groepwerk en
musiek in die aanspreek van dwelmafhanklikes se probleme, te ondersoek.
Die universum is maatskaplike werkers by inrigtings wat intervensie aan dwelmafhanklikes
deur middel van groepwerk, bied. Die ondersoek is deur 'n kombinasie
van gestruktureerde onderhoude sowel as gestruktureerde vraelyste, gerig.
Kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe inligting is dus ingesamel. Die resultate van hierdie
ondersoek het tot 'n groot mate die bevindinge van die literatuurstudie bevestig naamlik dat dwelmafhanklikes met sekere persoonlikheidseienskappe, emosies,
verdedigingsmeganismes en kommunikatiewe probleme presenteer; dat groepwerk 'n
gewenste metode om bogenoemde behoeftes en probleme aan te spreek en te hanteer,
is; en dat die benutting van musiek in groepsituasies waardevol in die fasilitering van
die uitdrukking van emosies, die afbreek van verdedigingsmeganismes en die
fasilitering van onder andere ontspanning, kan wees.
Die aanbevelings het op drie areas gefokus naamlik algemene aanbevelings rakende
inrigtingsbeleid, programme en skoling van maatskaplike werkers, aanbevelings ten
opsigte van die gemeenskaplike funksies van groepwerk en musiek, en aanbevelings
ten opsigte van verdere navorsing. Daar word aanbeveel dat die benuttingswaarde van
musiek in groepwerk met 'n spesifieke kliëntegroep, getoets moet word.

Emotional abuse is a problem experienced worldwide, crossing all economic, educational, social and ethnic segments of all societies. Overtime, many empirical researchers concentrated on studying the occurrence and impact of physical abuse on women but neglected to study the effects of emotional abuse on the woman's physical and mental health. But with time, researchers began to realise that emotional abuse also had a great impact on the lives of women. Therefore, a detailed exploration of emotional abuse between intimate adult partners has only recently emerged in the literature. Though it is difficult to separate emotional abuse from other forms of abuse, many women in our research who were provided with a definition of emotional abuse identified and confirmed that they have been emotionally abused in their past or are being abused in their current intimate relationships. This research project focused mainly on women who suffered and have survived the wounds of emotional abuse in intimate relationships.
Group work is aimed at the growth and development of the individual. This study reports on an in-depth analysis of the arrangements and formulation of the structure of support groups, and the effectiveness of the functioning of these groups. Participants who joined the support groups in this research, were women who have undergone therapeutic intervention and are/or were engaged in a healing process that involved reintegration, implementation and maintenance of therapeutic goals. Support groups do provide a place where people can share their experiences in a safe environment, and where they can symbolise their experiences and consequently make them more acceptable to the self. It has been concluded in this research that support groups were effective in giving members the opportunity of helping each other to heal from the wounds of emotional abuse by being supportive, giving feedback, making helpful suggestions and providing useful information necessary for their growth and development. Therefore, participants who joined the support groups agreed that they have benefited by receiving the encouragement and support from one another, which contributed towards their process of healing emotionally, and in turn, caused them to change from being helpless victims to survivors of emotional abuse. / Sociology / D. Guidelines for a shelter service delivery for victims of abuseGroenewald, Johanna Jacoba 11 1900 (has links)
This research was initiated, based on the recommendations of Groenewald (2006:126-127), in the Evaluation of Programmes of Shelters for Victims of Abuse in Gauteng Province, to develop a shelter service delivery model.
The research is exploratory in nature and outlines the literature review, methodologies, tested shelter model and findings based on the experiences of stakeholders. These stakeholders are responsible for the registration and management of shelters for victims of abuse in South Africa. They include nine Provincial Victim Empowerment Programme Co-ordinators and thirty-two shelter managers.
The main objectives for shelter managers and Government Departments, such as Social Development, are to provide care, support and protection. The aim is also to empower those who were caught up in relationships, fraught with gender-based violence, as well as to break the cycle of violence. This is presented in the guidelines for a shelter service delivery model for victims of abuse.
The shelter model focuses on three phases:
o Intake procedures
o Programmes and services
o Exit strategy
These three phases address both psycho-social issues and the self care of service providers.
The main purpose of the shelter model is to provide social service providers with a structural format for intervention with victims of abuse and their significant
others. The outcome, for most of them, should be to come to terms with themselves and create a personal vision for the future without abuse or, alternatively, to take a firm stand against such actions. The model is based on a person-centered approach in order to assist victims of violence, within a development model, to attain effective living.
Other findings of the research are, among others, that there is neither legislation, nor registration procedures for shelters for victims of abuse in place, except for Non-Profit Organisations, which is voluntary. It is recommended that Government should consider the amendment of the Domestic Violence Act, 116 of 1998. Guiding a child to adjust in a children's home: a Gestalt approachOverberg, Cindy Ann 30 November 2003 (has links)
This single case study was undertaken to determine how the Gestalt approach can be used to guide the child to adjust in a children's home. The study dealt with two models of children's homes, namely the traditional setting and the family centered home setting, as well as adjustment and attachment of a single child's experience in the middle school years, in the family centered home setting. In addition, the trauma, loss and culture shock are highlighted to demonstrate the difficulty children experience in adjusting to a new environment such as a children's home. Data were captured around the participant's experience and process, entering the children's home and the facilitating through intervention. Through the intervention the participant's process was identified, helping him to cope with his new situation. Through Gestalt play therapy the participant's active involvement in his adjustment process was clear and his adjustment was increased. / Social work / MDIAC (PLAY THERAPY)

In 1995 a participatory research project was undertaken in the Gauteng Welfare
Deparbnent by two outside researchers. The subject for the research was the management
of change in the Gauteng Welfare Department. During the research, the researcher
observed how the discouraged, apathetic and negative group became animated and
empowered. On the basis of this observation, the researcher undertook to do a case study
which reflects on the interactional process and cohesion which transpired within the
