Research studies, thus far, have given little attention to the correlation between social exclusion and pre-tertiary education failures in South Africa, yet the two are closely linked. The objective of this study is to assess whether social exclusion is impacting pre-tertiary education success in South Africa, and as such perpetuating the social exclusion cycle for the poor in the country.

'Triple jeopardy or manifestations of gendered social exclusions?' : a study looking at cervical cancer policy and women living with HIV in South Africa.

Background: Worldwide, it is poor women who are at greatest risk of cervical cancer. These patterns are resonated in South Africa where black women, particularly in rural areas are at heightened risk for cervical cancer. The rate of morbidity and mortality due to cervical cancer has increased and in the year 2000, deaths as a result of cervical cancer in South Africa exceeded maternal deaths. This increase in morbidity and mortality has been associated with the emergence of HIV and AIDS. Cancer of the cervix was listed as an HIV-related opportunistic infection and an AIDS defining illness by the Centers for Diseases Control in 1993. This research documents the challenges of implementing cervical cancer services in the context of HIV. It explores structural, gender, societal, social exclusion and practical barriers to implementing these services. Methodology: The study was conducted using qualitative methods of enquiry which employed in-depth interviews to collect data from participants. Interviews were held with government officials, Section Nine institutions, non -governmental organisations working in the fields of cervical cancer and HIV/AIDS. Results: The study found that South Africa does not have a comprehensive policy to address cervical cancer in women living with HIV neither does it have plans to enact such a policy. It found that cervical cancer was a marginalised disease. It also found that cervical cancer does not always form part of health priorities as it falls outside women as mothers‟ brackets. The study found that the social status and the level of participation and active citizenship of women living with HIV might be one of the reasons for lack of prioritisation of cervical cancer policies. Conclusion: Cervical cancer is a marginalised disease because it affects women outside of their reproductive roles, can be defined as an STI and it affects women who live in the margins of society. Cervical cancer marginalisation could be linked to the discourse of lack of political will, advocacy and action in relation to women‟s health. Surviving social exclusion : Zimbabwean migrants in Johannesburg, South Africa

The thesis analyses forms and levels of social exclusion of Zimbabwean migrants in the South African labour market and society. The research reveals that migrants face social exclusion through unruly practices of public officials and institutional bias. At community and individual level migrants are devalued and stigmatised by the local South Africans and other Zimbabwean migrants. To some extent Zimbabwean migrants participate in their own exclusion as they are divided along regional and ethnic lines. The thesis proposes an analytical framework for understanding the social exclusion of Zimbabwean migrants emphasising on how devaluation of migrant identity narrows the existing structure of opportunity, leading to various coping mechanisms some of which are deviant. The thesis proposes a moral and pragmatic view in understanding the social exclusion of migrants from a cosmopolitan perspective where migrants are citizens of a global world. Using a qualitative methodology the research provides an in-depth analysis of the life histories of fifty eight (58) ‘documented’ and ‘undocumented’ Zimbabwean men and women in Kempton Park and Tembisa. The research was carried out in 2012. Migrants respond to social exclusion by using social capital in the form of family/kinship, ethnic and church networks. Zimbabweans mainly rely on bonding rather than bridging social capital. To a greater extent, migrant networks help them to ‘get by’ and simply survive. The few that have managed to ‘get ahead’, have made use of networks with South African residents and other individuals outside their migrant network systems. These have facilitated acquisition of fake identity documents, jobs and other necessities. Family networks are beginning to repel migrants because of the economic pressures they face leading to the weakening of ties among Zimbabwean migrant family members. / Sociology / D. Litt. et Phil. Qualitative, applied research of an explorative and descriptive nature was followed. In order to address the problem, namely that the personality profile of children can lead to aggressive victims, the researcher undertook a literature study to describe bullying in middle childhood with the focus on aggressive victims, the Five Factor Model of Personality, bullying in special schools and organismic selfregulation within Gestalt therapy. Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / In this study, social exclusion in an independent, faith-based girl’s school in South Africa was investigated. Bullying is widely recognised as being unacceptable and is addressed by many schools in the form of anti-bullying policies. However, on ongoing basis, girls are being socially excluded from relationships and because this behaviour is often so subtle, it is neither recognised as a form of bullying nor is it being addressed within schools. Theologians argue that educational institutions ought to evaluate the ethical dimension of knowledge construction and that a focus on moral norms, values and virtues need to be a fundamental part of such communities, so that the well-being of its members is fostered. Unless problems such as social exclusion are understood from a theological-ethical perspective, it is unlikely that there will be a permanent change in girls’ behaviour. Changing societies that accommodate bullying requires changes in perspectives, attitudes and behaviour, and schools can make a significant contribution in providing a community in which every child feels accepted and is afforded dignity. This study offers a theoretical-ethical perspective of social exclusion and draws on insights from the fields of theological ethics, sociology, psychology and anthropology. The reasons why girls are socially excluded, the girls’ and the school’s systemic patterns of behaviour and what educators can do to develop an inclusive community are identified. To determine to what extent the theory was supported, alumnae were asked to complete the questionnaires and be interviewed. Some staff members also completed questionnaires and agreed to be interviewed. The findings of the empirical research indicated that the theoretical research was largely supported. Some interesting observations emerged from the questionnaires and interviews that expanded the understanding of social exclusion. One important finding was that the girls who are being excluded from social relationships feel that they are to blame and that they somehow deserve to be excluded. They experience strong feelings of shame as well as loss of self-esteem. This prevents them from discussing or reporting the problem and therefore the structures that are in place for such reporting are not effective. Another important finding was that there is a disconnection between the girls and the staff regarding the effectiveness of current interventions. Therefore, based on the theoretical research and the findings of the empirical data, this dissertation makes recommendations for establishing a community that promotes the well-being and dignity of all. / In hierdie studie is ondersoek ingestel na sosiale uitsluiting in ’n onafhanklike, geloofsgebaseerde meisieskool in Suid-Afrika.
