A comparison between the perceptual defense levels displayed by marriage partners in relation to insight

Gilbert, Maria Catharina 13 October 2015 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / An interest in the causes of disruption in disturbed marriages led to the present study which focuses on the area of interpersonal perception in the marriage relationship. Previous work has demonstrated that there are significantly more perceptual disjunctions between partners in disturbed than in non-disturbed marriages. However, prior research did not attempt to relate such disparate perceptions to personality factors in the respective partners ...

Ontoereikende sosiale waarneming, sosiale vaardigheidsgebreke en gedragsprobleme by kinders met minimale breindisfunksie

Engelbrecht, Johannes Jacob 12 February 2015 (has links)
M.A. (Psychology) / The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between social competence and the recognition of emotional expressions in children with minimal brain dysfunction. For this purpose a scale that assessed recognition of emotional expressions. was constructed and validated. Subsequently a group of 26 children with minimal brain dysfunction that satisfied certain selection criteria were selected as an experimental group and were paired off with a group of normal children. The groups were thereafter compared with each other in respect of social competence and recognition of emotions. Results revealed that children with minimal brain dysfunction made significantly more errors in the recognition of emotional expressions and that behavioural predispositions or traits such as aggression, assertiveness, and submission differed significantly between normal children and those with minimal brain dysfunction.

Relative deprivation and relative gratification as predictors of intergroup discrimination: can prejudice be reduced by equality?

Neuwenhuis, Bridgitte January 2009 (has links)
It has long been identified that relative deprivation increases prejudice. Guimond and Dambrun (2002) demonstrated that relative gratification, as the opposite of relative deprivation, is also an important variable in predicting intergroup discrimination. Guimond and Dambrun (2002), further suggest that in order to prevent destructive conflicts between groups, such as intergroup discrimination, the goal of equality rather than economic improvements has to be kept in mind. The present paper will report three experiments which aimed to replicate Guimond and Dambrun’s (2002) findings on relative deprivation and relative gratification and which further aimed to test their proposal that equality would reduce prejudice. The results of the three experiments confirmed the predicted effects of relative deprivation and relative gratification on intergroup discrimination. However, the results did not confirm that equality reduces prejudice. Methodological and theoretical reasons for these results are provided and discussed in detail.

An exploratory study of social perception and attitudes towards HIV/ AIDS orphans in Esikhawini and its surroundings.

Mkhatshwa, Nomsa M January 2002 (has links)
Submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER of Arts In the DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF ZULULAND, 2002. / This study looks at some important facts about the attitudes and feelings of grand parents- of young orphans with HIV/AIDS in Esikhawini and its surrounding. In real life people with AIDS are discriminated by community. This is due to the lack of information about HIV/AIDS more especial in our rural areas, this affects our young children who are born with or who are being raped by the infected people with the wrong idea that says, "if En 'infected person sleep with a virgin he would be cured". This study looks at the treatment of orphan with HIV/AIDS in different age groups. It reveals the impact of living with the pandemic in our community. It is found that people who have been diagnosed as HIV positive are being discriminated against very severely in a range of contexts and environment from school, sports and aspects of service and facilities which have a severe impact on their, social lives and self image. Much of this discrimination is in feet unjustified and unfair because no one has asked to be infected.

A Study of the Relationship Between Self-Concept, Public Image, and Consensus Rorschach Performance

Walhood, Dale Sherman 01 January 1975 (has links)
Four measures of dominance were taken on college roommate pairs. Three of the measures were derived from Leary’s interpersonal system for diagnosing personality. The fourth measure was derived from the consensus approach to Rorschach administration. Dominance scores for self-concept, public image, predicated image (a new measure in which a person attempts to predict how a significant other sees him) and consensus Rorschach performance were computed. Predicted image correlated higher with self-concept than public image as predicted. Results suggest that dominance as measured by the Rorschach is related to both public image and self-concept. Submissive members appear to understand the structure of the dyad better than their dominant counterparts. Implications for refining the validity of the dominance construct (trait vs. situation) are discussed.

A study of age and sex-related differences in the perception of emotional stimuli

Canizio, Nancy Mellor 01 January 1982 (has links)
In a tachistoscopic perception task, adult males in the Fels Research Institute's longitudinal population (Kagan and Moss, 1960) were found to have a higher recognition threshold for pictures depicting dependency scenes than adult females. The female subjects had a higher recognition threshold for aggressive scenes than the males. The present study was designed to further compare male and female perception of dependent and aggressive stimuli by including a developmental component to test if the perceptual differences vary with age. A benign or neutral stimulus category was added to aid in determining direction of any resulting differences: i.e., heightened perception or avoidance of perception, and a recognition memory task was added to the tachistoscopic task to determine if there were any differences between sensory and long term memory of emotional stimuli.

Perceptual correspondence in the superior-subordinate work dyad

Sager, Lora Lee 01 January 1986 (has links)
The purpose of the present investigation was to provide a clearer understanding of how various levels of perceptual correspondence are associated with one another and with performance appraisal. Specifically, the present study focused on the variable of accuracy in an attempt to discover its relative importance to performance appraisal. Also of interest was the relationship between accuracy and agreement.
