Factors contributing to the foster care backlog : service providers’ perspectives and suggestionsNgwenya, P. M. (Phindile M.) 01 1900 (has links)
The backlog in foster care applications has been an issue in the Department of Health and Social Development, Johannesburg office, for the last number of years, resulting in foster care placement applications accumulating and families’ quality of life being affected and compromised. The service providers are inundated with high caseloads. Foster care applications could take up to a year or longer before they are processed and finalised at the Children’s Court.
The aim of the study was to explore and describe the factors contributing to the foster care backlog from the service providers’ perspective and to provide suggestions to address this continuing backlog. The researcher employed a qualitative research approach and an explorative, descriptive and contextual research design. Factors such as high caseloads, lack of resources and lack of support and training from management were identified as contributing to the backlog. Recommendations made are the immediate filling of vacant posts, induction of new social workers, provision of adequate resources and infrastructure as well as the division of foster care services. / Social Work / M.A. (Mental Health)

The experience and challenges of women living with HIV in the Pietermaritzburg region, Kwazulu-Natal province: perspectives of social workersTayo, Siphiwo Zandisile 24 February 2015 (has links)
A qualitative study was undertaken in Pietermaritzburg to unveil the experiences and challenges of WLWHIV as perceived by social workers as well as to explore and describe the experiences of social workers in rendering services to these women. Explorative, descriptive and contextual research designs were employed for the research process. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were utilised to recruit participants who met the set criteria. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen participants. Data obtained were transcribed and analysed applying Tesch‘s eight steps (Creswell, 2009). Data verification was guided by Guba‘s model (Krefting, 1991).
The findings revealed the existence of strained relationships between WLWHIV and their partners and ineffective delivery of social work services to WLWHIV. Based on the findings, it is recommended that specialised training for social workers on issues related to death and dying and services for children of WLWHIV be incorporated in the guidelines for social work practice / Social Work / M.A. (social Work)

Text in Afrikaans / In die verhandeling word daar gepoog om vas te stel of selfdeterminasie
wel as 'n beginsel in maatskaplike werk, deur die
maatskaplike werkers van die Hoeveldstreek in Mpumalanga, erken en
toegepas word.
Die ondersoek het ten doel om te bepaal vanuit watter teoretiese
raamwerk die maatskaplike werkers hulle dienslewering rig en hoe die
beginsel selfdeterminasie binne die werkers se teoretiese raamwerk
geakkommodeer en aangespreek word.
Die ekosistemiese benadering is deur navorser gebruik as teoretiese
raamwerk. Die inhoud word weergegee in terme van 'n literatuurstudie,
waarin die beginsel selfdeterminasie, as sodanig aangespreek
word, dan die epistemologie van die maatskaplike werker, asook die
uitwerking van selfdeterminasie op dienslewering aan kliente.
Inligting is verkry deur middel van 'n vraelys wat deur maatskaplike
werkers in die praktyk voltooi is.
Die gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings gee 'n aanduiding van hoe selfdeterminasie
erken en toegepas word en hoe die maatskaplike werkers
die beginsel akkommodeer met betrekking tot hulle epistemologie. / In this dissertation the attempt is made to establish whether selfdetermination
as a principle in social work is acknowledged and
applied by the social workers of the Highveld region in Mpumalanga.
The aims of the research were to establish the theoretical frame of
reference which directs the social workers services and how the
principle of self-determination within the social workers frame of
reference is accommodated and applied in practice.
The researcher has used as her theoretical frame of reference the
ecosystemic approach. The contents of the dissertation is presented
in terms of a literature study, in which the principle and the effect
of self-determination on the services of the social worker to her
clients, as well as her theoretical frame of reference is addressed.
Information was obtained by means of a questionnaire which was
completed by social workers in the field.
The conclusions and recommendations give an indication of how selfdetermination
is acknowledged and applied and if the social workers
accommodated the principle of self-determination with their

The challenge of shifting paradigms : social workers exercising the ecosystems perspectiveDicker, Janet Linda. 03 1900 (has links)
This dissertation demonstrates and illustrates the challenges involved in the construction of new
realities when Duhl's (1983) idea of using metaphor to apply the ecosystems concept of wholeness
of systems, was exercised in two ways.
Firstly, the study was written in the form of an imaginary conversation between the author in the role
of researcher and an imaginary peer consultant, about making sense of ways of thinking. Through
presenting her observations to other observers, who are actually herself, a new reality was
constructed for the author. Secondly, new individual and group realities were constructed by a group
of social workers in the SANDF, who encountered their own ways of thinking through metaphorical
means such as sculpting.
Recommendations, co-constructed by the author, the imaginary peer consultant and two more
imaginary colleagues, suggest possible uses of the ecosystems perspective in social work including

becoming increasingly difficult in the Western Cape Metropolis, because many welfare
agencies have either closed down or do not have the capacity to accommodate students
for field placement. As a result of this situation, this research was undertaken with the aim
to investigate the feasibility of the corporate sector as a field placement for undergraduate
social work students.
By using the corporate sector as a field placement an opportunity can be created whereby
the university and the corporate sector could establish a workable partnership, with
mutual benefits for each. The corporate sector can benefit by services offered by the
students in the form of case-group and community work that can be rendered to the
employees. The university will benefit because a new option for student placements will
become available to them.
The domain of social work in the corporate sector was explored by defining occupational
social work; the nature of service rendering on micro, meso and macro levels and
discussing occupational social work in the 21st century.
Field placements of undergraduate students in the corporate sector were examined in
order to establish what the theoretical background for field placements in a corporate
setting ought to be. To this end, the nature and purpose; formats; settings and key role
players in field placements were explored. Social work methods in social work per se and
occupational social work in general were investigated. An investigation was also made into the management of the field placement programme
for undergraduate social work students in the corporate sector. The following were facets
were explored: the requirements of the department of social work at the University of the
Western Cape for fourth year students as well as the requirements for field placements in
the corporate sector, in order to establish the suitability of the corporate sector for field
placements.
Existing literature and empirical findings were used to collect data for this study.
Exploratory and descriptive research designs were applied in this study. Data was
collected through questionnaires and interviews and conclusions and recommendations
were based on the findings of the study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit word al hoe moeiliker om praktykonderrigplasings vir voorgraadse maatskaplike werk
studente in die Wes-Kaapse Metropool te vind, aangesien baie welsynsagentskappe of
gesluit het of nie die vermoë het om studente in posisies vir praktykonderrigplasings te
akkommodeer nie. As 'n gevolg van hierdie situasie is hierdie navorsing onderneem met die
doel om vas te stel of menslike hulpbron personeel binne die korporatiewe sektor gewillig
sal wees om voorgraadse studente vir praktykonderrig te akkommodeer.
Deur die korporatiewe sektor vir praktykonderrigplasings te gebruik, kan 'n geleentheid
geskep word waardeur die universiteit en die korporatiewe sektor 'n uitvoerbare
vennootskap, met wedersydse voordele vir albei, tot stand kan bring. Die korporatiewe
sektor kan voordeel trek uit die dienste wat deur die studente aangebied word, soos gevalle-,

Praktykonderrigplasings van voorgraadse studente in die korporatiewe sektor is ondersoek
om te bepaal wat die teoretiese agtergrond vir praktykonderrigplasings in die korporatiewe
omgewing behoort te wees. Vir hierdie doel is die aard en doel, formate, omgewings en
sleutel rolspelers in praktykonderrigplasings verken. Maatskaplike werkmetodes in
maatskaplike werk per se en beroepsmaatskaplike werk in die algemeen is ondersoek. 'n Ondersoek is ook gedoen na die bestuur van die praktykonderrigplasingsprogram vir

<p>Social welfare services are essential for development of human capital and eradication of poverty in South Africa generally. Social welfare plays a pivotal role in enabling the impoverished and vulnerable communities and households to lead their lives through provision of care, social relief, stability and human resource development. Non-Governmental Organisations form an integral part of the welfare system through their formal and informal welfare and residential and non-residential welfare services. The role of the NGOs becomes imperative precisely because of their inherent empathy and proximity to the communities they serve. Government itself has been engaged in the process of transformation and the same challenges of transformation, governance, and effectiveness still profound the NGO sector. Notwithstanding the contribution of the NGOs in the welfare system, it is crucial to scrutinise the nature of their work and the rate of transformation to flourish in the democratic dispensation. To enhance the process of transformation in the NGO sector, government passed a plethora of policies and legislative requirements, inter alia, White Paper for Social Welfare 1997, Non-Profit Organisations Act of 1997. The intent of this research therefore, was to establish the significance of transformation and inherent issues of governance, effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery and sustainability of the nature of social welfare services rendered by the NGO sector in the Western Cape, particularly the Worcester district.</p>

An investigation of student leadership in an independent school in the Eastern Cape: ʺdo alternative forms of leadership (such as servant leadership) emerge through community building?ʺKnott-Craig, Ian Duncan January 2008 (has links)
Significant changes have taken place in recent years in leadership theory and practice world wide. Theorizations of effective leadership have evolved from being authoritarian and task-centered to a model in which leaders are encouraged to look beyond their self-interest and prioritize the interests of the group. This study investigates the development of an alternative form of leadership through community building in two male school boarding houses. It attempts to ascertain whether students are able to work collaboratively towards developing an environment conducive to servant leadership. Structured according to the transformative research paradigm, this action research study was conducted in an independent school, Kingswood College, in Grahamstown, South Africa. The College is a traditional independent co-educational school that prides itself on producing leaders. As the school was in the process of reviewing its leadership system, it became an appropriate site to investigate the development of community and to explore possibilities for the emergence of an alternative form of leadership that would reflect the attributes of servant leadership. The participants in the study were volunteers from two boarding houses, who agreed to reflect on their perceptions and experiences of the way in which their houses functioned. My research findings show that through their willingness to engage in moral dialogue, students can transform their boarding houses into closely-knit communities bound together by shared values and beliefs. Closer relationships make for better understanding. As the leaders take on the responsibility of caring for their juniors, a moral obligation begins to manifest itself. Leaders will display the attributes of servant leadership if they are prepared to acknowledge in practice this moral obligation to serve others.

The release of ex-president Nelson Mandela on 10 February 1990, introduced transformation in South Africa. The road to transformation, in a post apartheid era, placed pressure and demands on the social work profession and the professionals. Change was inevitable (Lesnik 1997:164) while the inequities and the disparities of the past had to be eliminated and replaced with transformed services.
This study explores the transformational challenges experienced in contemporary social work practice at The Department of Social Development, Johannesburg, South Africa.
A non-probability sample was selected (Babbie and Mouton 2004:166). A combination of the qualitative and the quantitative approaches, with more emphasis on the quantitative approach was utilized. Questionnaires were used for data collection and analysis was done according to the framework as described by Tesch in De Vos et al., (1998:343).
