Strategies to improve the effectiveness of South African professional associationsGoldman, Lester Mark January 2015 (has links)
Professional associations and professional relationships are a feature of the social structure of all advanced societies. Professional associations perform or provide a number of functions and services for professionals and for the organisations employing them: Continuing education, admission to practice, certification and credentialing, educational standards, enforcement of standards, codes of ethics, and standards of performance, meetings, social activities, newsletters, and journals. Professional association membership is therefore very valuable to professionals and, in turn, for the organisations which employ those professionals, because of the wide variety of important functions served and services provided by such associations. This value cascades through to the economy of the countries in which the associations perform. This study seeks to contribute to the increased effectiveness of professional associations in South Africa by assessing the level of organisational effectiveness within these associations, and the factors that affect such effectiveness. It is hoped that this research will provide the necessary information to enable senior stakeholders within the associations to make better decisions, and formulate better strategies to improve their effectiveness. If challenges of ineffectiveness are not addressed, the risk is that these associations might not achieve optimal effectiveness and growth, with negative impact on the professionals they serve, and the economy. Conversely, and optimistically, improvements in the effectiveness of professional associations, will positively impact the professionals they serve, with cascading benefits to the economy. Convenience sampling was used to target the senior staff or office bearers within the 48 SAQA registered professional associations in South Africa, at the time of survey. Self-constructed instruments were used to measure the variables included in the hypothesised model. Open-ended questions were also included in the questionnaire in order to capture qualitative information about professional associations. Using STATISTICS Version 10 (2010), the data analyses included exploratory factor analyses, the calculation of Cronbach alphas and Pearson correlations, and the content analysis of qualitative data. The most important finding of this study is that being an effective learning organisation (ELO) is an important indicator of a PA’s organisational effectiveness. To be an ELO means that the PA should continuously strive to learn and improve by conducting research that benefits the association itself, its members, its sector and its country. It is therefore important that PA’s focus their efforts on becoming effective learning organisations by planning and directing their resources on achieving this objective. It means that PA’s must employ or contract in intellectual resources that would enable them to stay at the cutting-edge of services that their members and clients want. This would require PA’s to ensure that they have the continuous services of high calibre researchers. The second important finding of this study is the indication that membership growth is another measure of a PA’s organisational effectiveness. It has already been reported above that being an ELO drives membership growth. The fact that being the first-mover in the industry increases membership growth is an indication that PA’s should capitalise on this strength, by always striving to be the first in everything its members and clients require, or will require. This calls for PA’s to conduct continuous environmental scanning, and the required research and development to deliver products and services first to their members and clients. The fact that competitive characteristics drive membership growth indicates to PA’s that they could attract more members if they maintain and improve service levels; continuously and effectively lobby government for better services for their members and clients; develop and deliver unique services to their members and clients; protect themselves against imitation of their resources and skills, outperform their competitors; and continuously enhance their credibility compared to other professional associations.

degree of Doctor of Philosophy, March 2017. / This research is an investigation of how kinship is mobilised for commercial purposes by
business persons and with what kinds of effects on forms of kinship and obligation. Ntabankulu
urban, located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa has specifically been targeted for
this purpose. Through in-depth interviews targeting ‘Black’ South African business owners,
the research establishes the identities of the business persons whilst further exploring how they
draw from non-capitalist forms of organisation such as kinship in dealing with various
challenges associated with the dictates of capitalist enterprise. Important is the point that the
black business persons involved in this study have emerged from what can be deemed as
‘liminal’ precarious socio-economic backgrounds and proved to be active agents who could
successfully draw from practices based on non-capitalist forms of organisation such as kinship
to deal with obligation-related challenges encountered within an inherently capitalist context.
This study constitutes a break from conventional economics that has previously viewed
customary elements such as kinship as detrimental to business. This break is represented by
noting the resilience of non-capitalist forms of organisation, particularly within the business
context. Besides that, the relationship between culture and the market has been repositioned to
create a close relational situation in contrast to previous claims of the two being incompatible.
The study explores the ideas of kinship and related practices, reciprocal cooperation and
conflict as well as modernity’s influences within the context of efforts aimed at balancing
kinship with business obligations. In addition, the study investigates how the inevitable
coexistence of customary and business practices leads to newly invented forms of organisation
that have seen ethnic communities notably reinventing themselves into business entities. It
follows that South African corporations, just as is the case the world over, are increasingly
embracing customary values such as kinship in efforts to explore alternative markets and
structures of consumption. The study also assesses the complexities involved in balancing kin
and business obligations especially in relation to the multiplicity of kin and business obligations
that in instances tend to be contradictory. / XL2018

Work-family balance : an interpretive approach to understanding perceptions and strategies of dual-earner couples in Cape Town, South AfricaSeeley, Ana-Cristina 02 1900 (has links)
Balancing the work and family domains is an ongoing concern for men and women in dual-earner relationships. However, most of the research studies that have explored work-family balance, have been conducted within the North American context using highly educated middle-class couples. Furthermore, no known South African studies have explored work-family balance experiences and strategies based on the couple as a unit. The aim of this study is therefore to understand how middle-class South African dual-earner couples experience and pursue work-family balance. A sample comprising ten multi-racial, middle-class, heterosexual dual-earner couples with children, who work in different employment sectors, and reside in Cape Town, South Africa, were selected purposefully through the use of convenience and snow-ball sampling techniques. The interpretive approach located within the qualitative paradigm was employed to understand the subjective experiences of couples through the method of semi-structured conjoint interviews. All conjoint interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed for later analysis. Patterns and themes within the data were identified using thematic analysis and later organised through the use of thematic networks. Two organising themes were uncovered for the global theme "subjective experiences of work-family balance amongst dual-earner couples", namely that work-family balance is a unique experience, and that work-family balance is a dynamic process. Furthermore, the data analysis revealed ten organising themes for the global theme "strategies dual-earner couples use to pursue a work-family balance", namely that striving towards an egalitarian marital relationship helps to promote couples' experience of work-family balance; proactively structuring opportunities for time with family contributes to a balanced work and family life; accessing familial and paid support promotes feelings of being successful in balancing work and family roles; shared planning and organisation facilitates a better balance of work and family roles; living within means relieves couples of unnecessary financial stress; creating opportunities for "alone time" supports couples' work-family balance; work validation and satisfaction encourages greater experiences ofwork-family balance; having the ability to control one's schedule ensures greater freedom to transition between work and family domains; setting boundaries around work and family domains helps couples maintain their balance; and relying on faith to cope with work and family stressors leads to a more balanced life.
