The Multiple Roles of Women Pursuing Doctoral StudiesMalone, Laurell Coleman M.S. 05 May 1998 (has links)
Increases in the employment of women in administrative and managerial careers have drawn attention to a need for research that examines the interdependency of work and family roles, a need that is particularly crucial in the area of academic administration. This was a qualitative study of the strategies and support systems women educational administrators use to deal with the multiple roles they perform in life and work while pursuing doctoral studies.
Forty-four women educational administrators enrolled in Virginia Tech's fall 1996 dissertation seminar were selected to participate in a telephone interview. Each participant's responses were recorded and transcribed. Data were sorted using a variable-oriented format. Matrices were used to categorize and analyze the data, note emerging patterns of strategies and support systems, and compare and contrast roles across personal and situational variables.
The women in this study cited time as the common factor in most role conflicts occurring during their years of doctoral study. Strategies that centered around time management (prioritize, delegate, compartmentalize,) were used to deal with their multiple roles. Feelings of guilt, stress, exhaustion, and isolation were common. They depended on positive and affective support systems that included family, friends, co-workers, and cohort members to deal with responsibilities of home, work, and doctoral study. A strong sense of commitment, determination, and spiritual faith was credited most often as the one thing that kept them going as they responded to the problems, issues, concerns, and challenges of performing multiple roles in life and work. / Ed. Post-Secondary Students with Children: An Investigation of Motivation and the Experiences of "Student Parents"van Rhijn, Tricia Marie 11 September 2012 (has links)
This study focused on the experiences of undergraduate students with dependent children enrolled in university programs. A holistic approach was adopted to examine student parents’ experiences beyond the academic context. In particular, the research examined how student parents maintain their motivation to attend school despite significant strain and conflict added by taking on the student role. Three specific research questions were investigated exploring motivation to attend university, the influence of self-efficacy beliefs, and how student parents define their success as well as the strategies/supports they utilize to enable their success. Three theories were utilized to provide complementary approaches to explore the research questions: Self-Determination Theory, Possible Selves Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory.
Student parent participants were recruited from four universities in southern Ontario as part of a larger study of mature students. Three hundred and ninety-eight students completed an online survey that consisted of a mixture of open- and closed-ended questions. A mixed methods approach was utilized to analyze these data. Qualitative analyses included a directed and a conventional qualitative content analysis. Quantitative analyses included structural equation modeling work to test for measurement invariance based on enrollment status and to evaluate two competing structural models investigating the impact of efficacy beliefs.
The findings from this research provide evidence that student parents are quite self-determined in their motivations to attend university and that their motivation includes a strong future focus on their goal aspirations. Student parents’ self-efficacy beliefs and perceptions of school-family balance were found to be significant contributors to school, family, and life satisfaction. Measurement invariance was demonstrated for the study variables based on enrollment status and there were very few differences found between student parents studying on a full-time or part-time basis. Student parents defined success as encompassing multiple aspects, rather than a unitary focus on their student role. These broader definitions of success included success in terms of their individual development, their family relationships, and their workplaces in addition to their student roles. Practical implications of the work suggest ways that educational institutions, students, and others might support student parents’ success.

Heads of department experiences in managing multiple roles in the foundation phaseSeabi, Carol Zodwa January 2019 (has links)
Although much research has been conducted on Heads of Department (HODs) and their roles in the foundation phase, there has not been a strong focus on how these HODs manage their multiple roles. A qualitative case study was employed whereby data was collected from four primary schools in Tshwane North and Tshwane West District in the Gauteng province. Five purposively sampled HODs participated in this study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The study determined the HODs’ understanding of their multiple roles in the foundation phase. It further explored the management strategies these HODs employ to manage their multiple roles, the prospects and challenges they encountered as well as the support they received were also explored. The study discovered that a “collaborative effort”, where educators, the school principal, volunteers and lead teachers, as well as the officials from the department of education, play a huge role in making the multiple roles of the HODs doable. Secondly, in handling these multiple roles, HODs in this study had to engage in “needs analysis” every year in preparation for the following year. It also transpired that “effective communication” amongst role players (i.e. HODs, departmental officials, school principals, educators and support staff) through meetings where the roles had to be shared in order not to duplicate and /or to avoid disruption, became an important tool in performing their multiple roles. Finally, “commitment and dedication” demonstrated by HODs in this study are principles that help them to succeed in performing their multiple roles. Counselor Education Doctoral Students' Experiences with Multiple Roles and RelationshipsDickens, Kristen N 16 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of counselor education doctoral students who participated in multiple roles and relationships. Random purposeful sampling was used to conduct in-depth interviews with current doctoral students in CACREP-accredited counselor education programs who had completed at least one year of full-time enrollment as a doctoral student, participated in a minimum of two multiple roles that were provided in an a priori list, and had access to videoconferencing software in order to participate in the study.
The participants in this study reported and described perceptions of their lived experiences as counselor education doctoral students. The primary research question for the study was “How do counselor education doctoral students experience the phenomenon of multiple roles and relationships?” A review of the literature that examined types of multiple roles and relationships between counselor educators and students, ethical standards, and models for ethical management provided the foundation for the study. Semi-structured phenomenological interviews comprised of open-ended questions were used to collect data via videoconferencing software. Audio taped interviews were transcribed and analyzed for key words and descriptive terms. The data were coded into categories, categories were clustered into themes and themes were cross-analyzed to create super-ordinate themes. Super-ordinate themes were used to address the primary and secondary research questions.
Three super-ordinate themes emerged: awareness and education, multiple roles and relationships as transformative, and experiential learning. Implications for counselor education doctoral students and programs are presented along with recommendations for further research. Personal reflections of the researcher were provided.

A Case Study of Women Educational Administrators and Their Perspectives on Work and Life RolesPerkins, Krissy 01 January 2011 (has links)
Women are persistent in their pursuits to obtain advanced degrees in higher education, as evidenced by the growing percentage (53% in 2009 according to NCES, 2010). Their purposes for degree attainment are multiple and varied, as are their experiences in higher education. This case study investigated the perspectives of five females managing the roles of woman, mother, educational administrator, and doctoral student. Previous research has paid little attention to women who manage three roles, let alone four. Feminist Standpoint Theory undergirds this study and allows a conversation about power relations within the broader social order, allows the asking of questions and locating of absences, and illuminates the voices of women.
The semi-structured interviews of the five participants addressed the roles and lived experiences of each, seeking to understand the components of their perspectives and the variables that influenced those perspectives. The interviews, along with a researcher reflective journal and field notes, yielded data for a cross-case analysis with the themes of support, gender equality, personal fulfillment, tenacity, and time. As a result of the cross-case synthesis, implications for women seeking to fulfill the multiple roles discussed in this study are explicated in four major themes. "It Takes A Village" encompasses the various kinds of support surrounding doctoral student mothers who are educational administrators. "Running the Marathon" explores personal fulfillment and tenacity as they relate to the women's doctoral endeavors. "Burning the Midnight Oil" refers to the efficient use of time and gender equality in their lives. Lastly, "The Quest for Quality" discusses participants' pursuits to use time effectively in their multiple roles. Implications for graduate programs and staff as well as for future researchers are described. This study is the first to examine this specific combination of roles for females: woman, mother, educational administrator, and doctoral student. It adds to the literature concerning women managing multiple roles and can serve as a starting point for discussion and further research of the experiences of this specific population.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar como a área de Gestão de Pessoas vem contribuindo para o alcance dos objetivos estratégicos de uma determinada organização. O estudo baseou-se em uma análise teórica sob a perspectiva de diferentes autores, porém teve como pano de fundo o modelo dos múltiplos papéis propostos por Ulrich (1998). Considerando que as organizações estão em um processo de crescimento acelerado e de mudanças significativas, tendo que constantemente buscar diferenciais competitivos, este trabalho se apresenta como relevante para a empresa, principalmente por se fazer necessária a reflexão sobre a gestão de pessoas. O estudo de caso foi desenvolvido em uma empresa brasileira de grande porte do ramo metal mecânico do país, que atua no mercado mundial do agronegócio. A pesquisa contou com a aplicação de um questionário adaptado aos múltiplos papéis de RH, que buscou analisar a percepção da equipe de liderança da empresa e os profissionais que atuam na área de RH, além de terem sido consideradas informações complementares coletadas em relatórios internos. Concluiu-se que a área de gestão de pessoas vem atuando de forma estratégica e contribuindo com a organização no alcance de seus objetivos. Ficou evidenciado neste trabalho, a partir da percepção dos participantes, que a área atua de forma equilibrada nos papéis propostos, ou seja, como parceiro estratégico, agente de mudanças, especialista em gestão e mediador. The study was based on a theoretical analysis under the perspective of different authors, but had as a background the model of the multiple roles proposed by Ulrich (1998). Whereas organizations are in a process of rapid growth and significant changes, having constantly to seek competitive advantages, this work presents itself as relevant to the company, primarily by reflecting on their people management. The case study has been developed at a large Brazilian company in the metal mechanical sector, which operates in the global agribusiness market. The research involved the application of a questionnaire adapted to the multiple roles of HR, which sought to analyze the perception of the leadership team of the company and the professionals working in the HR area, besides being considered complementary information gathered in internal reports. We conclude that the area of people management has been acting strategically and contributing to the organization on the achievement of its goals. It has become evidenced in this study, from the participants' perceptions, that the area operates in a balanced way in the proposed roles, that is, the strategic partner, agent of changes, specialist in management and transparent management. Recommendations for enhancements to the organization remain, as a possibility to continue the studies from the conclusions reached.
