There are many approaches in testing software. To effectively test a complicated software product, it is not merely assessing the software development process, but grasping the quality in all manners.
Managing software test is an extremely important topic in testing software. Nowaday, V Model is mostly used as the Software Testing Management Model. Therefore, this thesis targets V Model as the one, which should be improved.
This research suggests that testing software needs a simple and clear management model to follow. If it does not know "what to do" or "how to go", then the testing results often violate the requirement. Thereafter, it also produces very serious problems as to the quality of the software. Through collecting: academic documents, system and architecture definitions, software test management theory, software testing standard norms, software testing management model, etc., this thesis channels into a software test management with the concept of architecture, proposes the Architecture-Oriented Software Testing Management Model (AOSTMM). AOSTMM is capable of describing "what to do" or "how to go" in software testing. This is the contribution of this research.

Similarity-Based Test Effort ReductionFlemström, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
Embedded computer systems are all around us. We find them in everything, from dishwashers to cars and airplanes. They must always work correctly and moreover, often within certain time constraints. The software of such a system can be very large and complex, e.g. in the case of a car or a train. Hence, we develop the software for embedded systems in smaller, manageable, parts. These parts can be successively integrated, until they form the complete software for the embedded system, possibly at different levels. This phase of the development process is called the system integration phase and is one of the most critical phases in the development of embedded systems. In this phase, substantial effort is spent on testing activities. Studies have found that a considerable amount of test effort is wasteful due to people, unknowingly or by necessity, performing similar (or even overlapping) test activities. Consequently, test cases may end up to be similar, partially or wholly. We identified such test similarities in a case study of 2500 test cases, written in natural language, from four different projects in the embedded vehicular domain. Such information can be used for reducing effort when maintaining or automating similar test cases. In another case study in the same domain, we investigated several approaches for prioritizing test cases to automate with the objective to reduce manual test effort as quick as possible given that similar automated tests could be reused (similarity-based reuse). We analyzed how the automation order affects the test effort for four projects with a total of 3919 integration test cases, written in natural language. The results showed that similarity-based reuse of automated test case script code, and the best-performing automation order can reduce the expected manual test effort with 20 percentage points. Another way of reducing test effort is to reuse test artifacts from one level of integration to another, instead of duplicating them. We studied such reuse methods, that we denote vertical reuse, in a systematic mapping study. While the results from of our systematic mapping study showed the viability of vertical test reuse methods, our industrial case studies showed that keeping track of similarities and test overlaps is both possible and feasible for test effort reduction. We further conclude that the test case automation order affects the manual test execution effort when there exist similar steps that cannot be removed, but are possible to reuse with respect to test script code. / Inbyggda datorsystem finns överallt omkring oss idag; i allt från diskmaskiner till bilar och flygplan. Ofta finns det stränga krav på såväl korrekt funktion som svarstider. Eftersom programvaran i det inbyggda systemet i till exempel en bil är väldigt stor och komplex, utvecklar man programvaran i mindre delar som sedan successivt integreras till det färdiga datorsystemet. Denna del av utvecklingsprocessen kallas systemintegrationsfasen och är en av de största och mest kritiska faserna när man utvecklar inbyggda system. Integrationen kan utföras i ett antal nivåer med utförliga tester av mjukvaran på varje nivå. Detta innebär att det krävs ett avsevärt arbete för att testa mjukvaran. Om man kan minska detta arbete, givetvis utan att ge avkall på testningens kvalitet, förväntas det få en stor effekt på det totala utvecklingsarbetet. Studier har visat att en icke försumbar del av testarbetet är slöseri på grund av att människor, omedvetet eller av nödvändighet, utför likartade (eller till och med överlappande) testaktiviteter. En konsekvens är att testfall riskerar att bli helt eller delvis lika. Vi identifierade sådana likheter i en fallstudie med 2500 manuella testfall, skrivna på vanligt språk, från fyra projekt inom fordonsindustrin. Information om likheter och överlapp kan användas för att, till exempel, minska arbetsåtgången vid underhåll eller när man översätter testfall till kod så att de kan utföras automatiskt av en dator (automatisering). I en annan studie inom samma domän, undersökte vi flera metoder för att prioritera arbetsordningen vid automatisering av testfall där liknande testfall kunde återanvändas. I studien analyserade vi hur denna ordning påverkar arbetsmängden för fyra industriprojekt med totalt 3919 integrationstestfall skrivna på vanligt språk. Resultaten visar att den bästa ordningen kan minska testarbetet avsevärt. En förutsättning för detta är att redan översatta delar av testfall kan återanvändas för att slippa översätta liknande testfall igen. En annan väg för att minska testarbetet är att återanvända testfall och information mellan integrationsnivåer. Vi har kartlagt metoder och motiv kring sådan återanvändning i en systematisk mappningsstudie. Våra fallstudier visar vidare att det både är genomförbart och lönsamt att hålla reda på likheter i testfallen. Currently, information technology is influencing every walks of life. Our livesincreasingly depend on the software and its functionality. Therefore, thedevelopment of high-quality software products is indispensable. Also, inrecent years, there has been an increasing interest in the demand for high-qualitysoftware products. The delivery of high-quality software products and services isnot possible at no cost. Furthermore, software systems have become complex andchallenging to develop, test, and maintain because of scalability. Therefore, withincreasing complexity in large scale software development, testing has been acrucial issue affecting the quality of software products. In this paper, large-scalesoftware testing challenges concerning quality and their respective mitigations arereviewed using a systematic literature review, and interviews. Existing literatureregarding large-scale software development deals with issues such as requirementand security challenges, so research regarding large-scale software testing and itsmitigations is not dealt with profoundly.In this study, a total of 2710 articles were collected from 1995-2020; 1137(42%)IEEE, 733(27%) Scopus, and 840(31%) Web of Science. Sixty-four relevant articleswere selected using a systematic literature review. Also, to include missed butrelevant articles, snowballing techniques were applied, and 32 additional articleswere included. A total of 81 challenges of large-scale software testing wereidentified from 96 total articles out of which 32(40%) performance, 10(12 %)security, 10(12%) maintainability, 7(9 %) reliability, 6(8%) compatibility, 10(12%)general, 3(4%) functional suitability, 2(2%) usability, and 1(1%) portability weretesting challenges were identified. The author identified more challenges mainlyabout performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and compatibility qualityattributes but few challenges about functional suitability, portability, and usability.The result of the study can be used as a guideline in large-scale software testingprojects to pinpoint potential challenges and act accordingly.

Interoperability of wireless communication technologies in hybrid networks : evaluation of end-to-end interoperability issues and quality of service requirementsAbbasi, Munir A. January 2011 (has links)
Hybrid Networks employing wireless communication technologies have nowadays brought closer the vision of communication “anywhere, any time with anyone”. Such communication technologies consist of various standards, protocols, architectures, characteristics, models, devices, modulation and coding techniques. All these different technologies naturally may share some common characteristics, but there are also many important differences. New advances in these technologies are emerging very rapidly, with the advent of new models, characteristics, protocols and architectures. This rapid evolution imposes many challenges and issues to be addressed, and of particular importance are the interoperability issues of the following wireless technologies: Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) IEEE802.11, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) IEEE 802.16, Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC), Digital Video Broadcasting of Satellite (DVB-S/DVB-S2), and Digital Video Broadcasting Return Channel through Satellite (DVB-RCS). Due to the differences amongst wireless technologies, these technologies do not generally interoperate easily with each other because of various interoperability and Quality of Service (QoS) issues. The aim of this study is to assess and investigate end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements, such as bandwidth, delays, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput, TCP performance, UDP performance, unicast and multicast services and availability, on hybrid wireless communication networks (employing both satellite broadband and terrestrial wireless technologies). The thesis provides an introduction to wireless communication technologies followed by a review of previous research studies on Hybrid Networks (both satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies, particularly Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, and SCPC). Previous studies have discussed Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC and 3G technologies and their standards as well as their properties and characteristics, such as operating frequency, bandwidth, data rate, basic configuration, coverage, power, interference, social issues, security problems, physical and MAC layer design and development issues. Although some previous studies provide valuable contributions to this area of research, they are limited to link layer characteristics, TCP performance, delay, bandwidth, capacity, data rate, and throughput. None of the studies cover all aspects of end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements; such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, link performance, TCP and UDP performance, unicast and multicast performance, at end-to-end level, on Hybrid wireless networks. Interoperability issues are discussed in detail and a comparison of the different technologies and protocols was done using appropriate testing tools, assessing various performance measures including: bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput and availability testing. The standards, protocol suite/ models and architectures for Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC, alongside with different platforms and applications, are discussed and compared. Using a robust approach, which includes a new testing methodology and a generic test plan, the testing was conducted using various realistic test scenarios on real networks, comprising variable numbers and types of nodes. The data, traces, packets, and files were captured from various live scenarios and sites. The test results were analysed in order to measure and compare the characteristics of wireless technologies, devices, protocols and applications. The motivation of this research is to study all the end-to-end interoperability issues and Quality of Service requirements for rapidly growing Hybrid Networks in a comprehensive and systematic way. The significance of this research is that it is based on a comprehensive and systematic investigation of issues and facts, instead of hypothetical ideas/scenarios or simulations, which informed the design of a test methodology for empirical data gathering by real network testing, suitable for the measurement of hybrid network single-link or end-to-end issues using proven test tools. This systematic investigation of the issues encompasses an extensive series of tests measuring delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth, throughput, availability, performance of audio and video session, multicast and unicast performance, and stress testing. This testing covers most common test scenarios in hybrid networks and gives recommendations in achieving good end-to-end interoperability and QoS in hybrid networks. Contributions of study include the identification of gaps in the research, a description of interoperability issues, a comparison of most common test tools, the development of a generic test plan, a new testing process and methodology, analysis and network design recommendations for end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements. This covers the complete cycle of this research. It is found that UDP is more suitable for hybrid wireless network as compared to TCP, particularly for the demanding applications considered, since TCP presents significant problems for multimedia and live traffic which requires strict QoS requirements on delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth. The main bottleneck for satellite communication is the delay of approximately 600 to 680 ms due to the long distance factor (and the finite speed of light) when communicating over geostationary satellites. The delay and packet loss can be controlled using various methods, such as traffic classification, traffic prioritization, congestion control, buffer management, using delay compensator, protocol compensator, developing automatic request technique, flow scheduling, and bandwidth allocation.

With so many developers writing code, so many choose to become a developer every day, using tools to aid in the work process is needed. With all the testing being done for multiple different devices and sources there is a need to make it better and more efficient. In this thesis connecting the variety of different tools such as version control, project management, issue tracking and test systems is explored as a possible solution. A possible solution was implemented and then analyzed through a questionnaire that were answered by developers. For an example results as high as 75\% answering 5 if they liked the connection between the issue tracking system and the test results. 75\% also gave a 5 when asked about if they liked the way the test results were presented. The answers they gave about the implementation made it possible to conclude that it is possible to achieve a solution that can solve some of the presented problems. A better way to connect various tools to present and analyze the test results coming from multiple different sources.

This thesis evaluates a method for extracting architectural dependencies and performance measures from an evolving distributed software system. The research goal was to establish methods of determining potential scalability issues in a distributed software system as it is being iteratively developed. The research evaluated the use of industry available distributed tracing methods to extract performance measures and queuing network model parameters for common user activities. Additionally, a method was developed to trace and collect system operations the correspond to these user activities utilizing automated acceptance testing. Performance measure extraction was tested across several historical releases of a real-world distributed software system with this method. The trends in performance measures across releases correspond to several scalability issues identified in the production software system. / Graduate
