Telemetry System Architecture for a Solar Car

ITC/USA 2015 Conference Proceedings / The Fifty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2015 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV / This paper discusses the telemetry system used to monitor the performance of a solar-powered vehicle during testing and competitions. Car-side systems collect and transmit data onboard over an ISO 11898 / CAN bus. A bridge then converts this data into TCP/IP packets, which are transmitted via Ethernet to a Wi-Fi access point. The data is distributed through an IEEE 802.11N 5GHz mesh network to provide real time data to remote computers running telemetry software. This software displays and logs data from the car, allowing team members to monitor the vehicle.

Control Strategy For Maximizing Power Conversion Efficiency And Effectiveness Of Three Port Solar Charging Station For Electric Vehicles

Recent trends in the energy sector have provided opportunities in the research of alternative energy sources and optimization of systems that harness these energy sources. With the rising cost of fossil fuel and rising concern about detrimental effects that fossil fuel consumption has on the environment, electric vehicles are becoming more prevalent. A study put out in 2009 gives a prediction that in the year 2025, 20% of new vehicles will be PHEVs.[1] As energy providers become more concerned about a growing population and diminishing energy source, they are looking into alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power. Much of this is done on a large scale with vast amounts of land used for solar or wind farms to provide energy to the grid. However, as population grows, requirements of the physical components of a power transmission system will become more demanding and the need for remote micro-grids will become more prevalent. Micro-grids are essentially smaller subsystems of a distribution system that provide power to a confined group of loads, or households. Using the idea of micro grid technology, a solar charging station can be used as a source to provide energy for the immediate surroundings, or also to electric vehicles that are demanding energy from the panels. Solar charging stations are becoming very popular, however the need for improvement and optimization of these systems is needed. This thesis will present a method for redesigning the overall architecture of the controls and power electronics of typical carports so that efficiency, reliability and modularity are achieved. Specifically, a typical carport, as seen commonly today, has been built on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando. This iii carport was designed in such a way that shifting from conventional charging methods is made easy while preserving the fundamental requirements of a practical solar carport.

OPTIMIZATION OF ONBOARDSOLAR PANELGEOMETRYFOR POWERING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

<p> Integrating solar energy into the electric vehicle (EV) market alleviates the demand for</p> <p>fossil fuels used to generate the electricity used to power these vehicles. Integrated solar panels</p> <p>provide a new method of power generation for an electric vehicle, but researchers must consider</p> <p>new dependent variables such as drag in the figure of vehicle efficiency. For the solar array to be</p> <p>deemed a viable option for power generation, the solar array must generate enough energy to</p> <p>overcome the added weight and aerodynamic drag forces the solar system introduces. The thesis</p> <p>explores the application of photovoltaic modules for power generation in an EV system.</p> <p>Researchers installed an off-the-shelf solar module on the roof of an EV and investigated the</p> <p>system to explore the efficiency tradeoffs. The research sought to identify an optimized solar</p> <p>panel configuration for minimized drag based on maximized panel surface irradiance, cooling,</p> <p>and array output voltage parameters. The study utilized computational fluid dynamics modeling,</p> <p>wind tunnel testing, and full-scale track testing to analyze the system. The results of this study</p> <p>provide an optimized configuration for a Renogy RNG-100D atop a Chevrolet Bolt. The system</p> <p>was considered optimal at a tilt angle of zero degrees when in motion. The performance benefits</p> <p>due to the increased angle of the solar panel tilt were deemed insufficient in overcoming the</p> <p>aerodynamic drag forces introduced into the system while in motion.</p>
