Den dygdiga qvinnan jag ej kunde öfvervinna : Om framställningar av kvinnor och män i dagspressen genom Sagerska målet 1848-1849

Juto, Josefine January 2021 (has links)
The case ‘Sagerska målet’ has been recognized because of how Sophie Sager by herself reported a man to the police for abuse in 1848. In her report it also became clear that she had been the victim of an attempted rape. The case then gained attention in the press. The purpose of the study is to understand why different depictions of women and men are constructed and communicated in the press through ‘Sagerska målet’. This qualitative study offers an analysis based on material such as the book Sagerska målet by Sophie Sager as well as articles, notices, texts by those who were involved and other texts in various Swedish newspapers during the period of 1 August 1848 - 31 July 1849. The results show that Sager was questioned and discredited both in the statements made by those who were involved and within the general press coverage. The depictions are constructed to gain and/or dismantle credibility or to shift the blame elsewhere. The published material in the newspapers expresses a preservation of a prevailing gender order. However, some of the statements and actions indicate a gender order in motion.
