The field work, upon which this article is based, was done during the summer of 1911 by a party of United States Geological Survey, under the direct supervision of Mr. E. M. Parks assisted by the writer. The duty of this party was to map the coal for the purpose of land classification. The region examined is located in the extreme northwestern corner of South Dakota and township 21 north of latitude 44 degrees, range 5 east of the Black Hills meridian, which is the state line between South Dakota and Wyoming is taken as typical of the larger fields examined, and is described in detail in this article. This work is treated in three parts which fall under the following heads: Part I, a resume of the literature on the field abstracts of articles relating to descriptive geology but contains only mention of those articles dealing with age and origin of the formation; Part II, a detailed geologic description of Tp. 21 Rg. 5; Part III, a historical review of the opinion in regard to age and origin of the Lance, Fort Union and White River formations. / Master of Science

Exploring the American Indian/Alaska Native 8th Grade Patterns in Mathematics Achievement in Arizona and South Dakota

Thesis advisor: Henry Braun / School reports mandated by NCLB demonstrated that AI/AN students have the lowest achievement among focal subgroups. What has not yet been investigated are the achievement differences among AI/AN students: public low density school students scored significantly higher than public high density school students who scored significantly higher than BIE school students on the NAEP 8th grade mathematics achievement test in 2009. The NIES data made it possible to reliably estimate and investigate these differences. Nine derived risk factors and seven risk indices were created using both NAEP and NIES student, teacher, and school questionnaire data. Chi-square and OLS regression analyses were performed to better understand the achievement patterns between states and across school density types within states. The final OLS regression models were more similar across states within school density types than across school density types within a state. Four out of the six final models captured the data well with the adjusted R-squared values ranging from 0.31-0.38 (the other two final models had adjusted R-squared values of 0.24 and 0.11). The results of the OLS regression models in five of the six strata showed that the NAEP Social/physical risk index was significantly associated with lower student achievement. The final model for the South Dakota BIE school students included completely different predictors than the final models for the other five strata, possibly related to the extreme poverty on the reservations in South Dakota. There was a discrepancy in most strata between the number of students labeled as being ELL and the number of students who stated they spoke a language other than English at home at least half of the time or more. These and other results suggest that schools should focus on forming stronger connections with the students’ families both because of language barriers and parents’ previous experiences in school. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. This thesis seeks to understand the various forces that have shaped the form, content, utilization and emergence of abortion narratives--both within a historical context and for political value. By comparing the themes that emerge within and across three sets of narratives--anti-abortion narratives, pre-Roe narratives that support abortion rights, and post-Roe abortion-rights narratives--and by identifying both gaps and influxes in the use of narratives, this thesis argues that the content and utilization of abortion narratives is directly connected to broader discursive strategies and political ideologies of reproductive rights organizations.

Stable isotope record of soil carbonates from the Eocene-Oligocene transition, Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA

Sections in and around Badlands National Park, Custer County, South Dakota contain a wealth of faunal and floral data within the White River Group. The Chadronian and Orellan North American Land Mammal Ages define the Eocene-Oligocene boundary here. Faunal and floral changes associated with the Chadronian-Orellan interval have long been attributed to the global Greenhouse-Icehouse climatic transition. Stable isotopes were obtained from paleosol carbonates across the Chadronian-Orellan boundary at three locations in Badlands National Park. Results show wide fluctuations of oxygen isotopes in the uppermost Chadronian and lower Orellan, while carbon isotopes remain relatively stable. The records provide an opportunity to compare the continental response to global change with a near-shore marine system response (Gulf Coastal Plain, USA); and to the world at large. Results indicate a decoupling of the terrestrial response to the Oi-1 glacial event from the marine response.
