Characterizing the disintegration behavior of distiller’s spent grain compacts during drying in superheated steamJohnson, Praveen January 2014 (has links)
Biomass such as spent grain is difficult to dry when it is in the slurry form. Proposed industrial solutions are to compact wet biomass first and then dry it. Compaction develops desired granular form and increases surface area for drying but also brings new technical challenges. Superheated steam (SS) drying is advantageous over hot-air drying as it is more energy efficient. A problem associated SS drying is the initial condensation leading to disintegration of biomass compacts. The current research investigates the disintegration characteristics of distiller’s spent grain (DSG) compacts while being dried in SS. The study focuses on the DSG flowability, densification characteristics and disintegration behavior of DSG compacts as affected by SS drying conditions, soluble content and particle size distribution (PSD).
DSG fractions with particle sizes from 300 to 850 µm were dried in SS at 150°C and hot-air at 45 and 150°C. Under these drying conditions bulk density and angle of repose (AOR) varied from 0.379 to 0.435 g/cm3 and 46.0 to 50.4°, respectively. The stress-relaxation data obtained during the compaction of DSG at different levels of compressive pressure (60.3-135.7 MPa), initial moisture content (15, 20 and 25% wet basis- wb) and soluble content (15 and 30%) were normalized and analyzed to determine the asymptotic modulus (EA) of the compacts. The highest EA of 174 MPa was obtained for DSG compacts produced with a compressive force of 135.7 MPa, initial moisture of 25% wb and soluble content of 0%.
The percentage increase in volume of DSG compacts during drying in SS at 110 to 150°C temperature range was between 78 to 130%. A comparison between the physical properties of SS dried and hot-air dried compacts revealed the role of SS in accelerating the release of mechanical energy stored in the compacts. An increase of dimensions and a considerable increase in the hardness and EA of the compacts was obtained by adding up to 70% (w/w) solubles or by decreasing the PSD of wet distiller’s spent grain from d(0.9)=1283.6 to 812.8 µm. This study establishes that compaction of wet biomass followed by SS drying can lead to its effective utilization.

Superheated steam (SS) drying of distillers’ spent grain (DSG) is a more energy efficient alternative to conventional hot air drying. SS drying at sub-atmospheric pressure (also referred to as low pressure) can prevent burning and lowering the quality of the food product. The objective of this study was to design, fabricate, and test a SS drying system that could operate at sub-atmospheric pressure for drying DSG. After the custom designed system was constructed, major problems associated with the system were identified. A number of tests were carried out and modifications were made to the system to resolve technical problems. Distillers’ spent grain was then successfully dried using the system under various levels of temperature from 95 to 115°C and pressure of either -25 or -20 kPa, with a SS velocity from 0.100 to 0.289 m/s.

Flat Quartz-Crystal X-ray Spectrometer for Nuclear Forensics ApplicationsGoodsell, Alison 2012 August 1900 (has links)
The ability to quickly and accurately quantify the plutonium (Pu) content in pressurized water reactor (PWR) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is critical for nuclear forensics purposes. One non-destructive assay (NDA) technique being investigated to detect bulk Pu in SNF is measuring the self-induced x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Previous XRF measurements of Three Mile Island (TMI) PWR SNF taken in July 2008 and January 2009 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) successfully illustrated the ability to detect the 103.7 keV x ray from Pu using a planar high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. This allows for a direct measurement of Pu in SNF. Additional gamma ray and XRF measurements were performed on TMI SNF at ORNL in October 2011 to measure the signal-to-noise ratio for the 103.7 keV peak.
Previous work had shown that the Pu/U peak ratio was directly proportional to the Pu/U content and increased linearly with burnup. However, the underlying Compton background significantly reduced the signal-to-noise ratio for the x-ray peaks of interest thereby requiring a prolonged count time. Comprehensive SNF simulations by Stafford et al showed the contributions to the Compton continuum were due to high-energy gamma rays scattering in the fuel, shipping tube, cladding, collimator and detector1. The background radiation was primarily due to the incoherent scattering of the 137Cs 661.7 keV gamma. In this work methods to reduce the Compton background and thereby increase the signal-to-noise ratio were investigated.
To reduce the debilitating effects of the Compton background, a crystal x-ray spectrometer system was designed. This wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy technique isolated the Pu and U x rays according to Bragg's law by x-ray diffraction through a crystal structure. The higher energy background radiation was blocked from reaching the detector using a customized collimator and shielding system.
A flat quartz-crystal x-ray spectrometer system was designed specifically to fit the constraints and requirements of detecting XRF from SNF. Simulations were performed to design and optimize the collimator design and to quantify the improved signal-to-noise ratio of the Pu and U x-ray peaks. The proposed crystal spectrometer system successfully diffracted the photon energies of interest while blocking the high-energy radiation from reaching the detector and contributing to background counts. The spectrometer system provided a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower percent error for the XRF peaks of interest from Pu and U. Using the flat quartz-crystal x-ray spectrometer and customized collimation system, the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) simulations showed the 103.7 keV Pu x-ray peak signal-to-noise ratio improved by a factor of 13 and decreased the percent error by a factor of 3.3.

Radiation damage in silicate mineral systems and the characterisation of a spent nuclear fuel pond wallBower, William January 2015 (has links)
The safety case for a proposed geological disposal facility (GDF) for radioactive wastes relies upon a series of engineered and natural barrier systems to limit the migration of harmful radionuclides into the geosphere over geological timescales. Natural minerals, dominantly phyllosilicates, are expected to be the most reactive components of both the host rock and the clay-based backfill surrounding the highly radioactive waste canisters for as long as 100,000 years. Upon eventual canister degradation, alpha-emitting radionuclides will leach into the backfill material (and eventually beyond) and the constituent mineral systems will accumulate radiation damage upon radionuclide uptake and/or surface precipitation. The following study is an assessment of the structural and chemical effects caused by alpha-particle bombardment of silicate minerals, as proxies for the radiation stability of natural materials present in the near and far field of a GDF.Microscopy and spectroscopy studies from naturally occurring radiation damage accumulated in silicates over geological timescales (forming distinct 'radiohaloes') have shown that both alpha-particle and alpha-recoil bombardment results in altered unit cell dimensions caused by the accumulation of point (Frenkel) defects. In the example of highly damaged biotite, structural breakdown through the reorientation of discrete lattice crystallites was observed; the variability of the interlayer spacing within these regions reveal the potential for damaged mica to adopt the structure of phyllosilicate breakdown products over geological time. Controlled alpha-particle irradiation using the Dalton Cumbrian Facility's 5 MV tandem pelletron ion accelerator, combined with microfocus spectroscopy analysis has revealed the mechanisms of high fluence alpha-radiation damage across 2:1 phyllosilicate minerals (biotite and chlorite); reducing the layered structures into a series of loosely connected domains of alternating lattice expansion and collapse. Radiation induced Fe redox changes have been revealed, with Fe reduction apparent at relatively low alpha-particle doses, giving way to Fe oxidation at high doses. A 'redox gradient', based on alpha-particle energy deposition through a silicate structure has therefore been proposed. In addition, the increase in 'edge' sites generated by structural deformation has been shown to be favourable for the adsorption of the Se(IV) oxyanion to the mica surface. Comprising a body of additional work, a core sample has been extracted from a spent nuclear fuel pond wall at the decommissioned Hunterston A nuclear power station and the radioactive contamination on the painted core surface has been analysed by microfocus spectroscopy. The contaminant radiostrontium has been shown to be associated with the Ti rich pigment in the surface paint, resulting in a 'patchy' accumulation of radioactivity at the core surface. In addition, inert Cs reactivity experiments using the underlying concrete have shown that Cs is preferentially uptaken by phyllosilicates within the altered mafic clasts used in the concrete aggregate.

This study examines the relationships between celebrities and their followers through social networking sites (SNS). A total of 239 participants completed the survey through MTurk. The results show that celebrities’ self-disclosure on SNS increases their Parasocial Interaction (PI) with fans. In addition, when a celebrity is perceived as trustworthy, s/he would have a higher PI with fans. Meanwhile, celebrities’ self-disclosure was not associated with trustworthiness. Furthermore, time spent on SNS was also not associated with PI.
This study also found that type of celebrity does not determine the degree of influence they have on the followers. People have almost same parasocial interaction with their favorite celebrity whether the celebrity is a singer, athlete, actor, or any other. Additionally, there is no specific social networking site on which people have a stronger PI with celebrities. PI with celebrities on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and the other platforms is almost the same.
