Evaluation and performance enhancement of cooling tower spray zones

Roux, Daniel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The performance of wet cooling towers can be improved by installing spray nozzles that distribute the cooling water uniformly onto the fill whilst operating at a low pressure head. In this thesis, three commercial spray nozzles are experimentally evaluated in terms of flow and pressure loss characteristics as well as water distribution patterns. The results of the evaluation process highlight the need for spray nozzles with enhanced performance characteristics. The theory required to implement the results of the evaluation process in the design of a cooling tower is presented and discussed. A systematic approach to enhance the performance of a spray nozzle through minor alterations is applied to one of the commercial spray nozzles that was evaluated. The fluid dynamics of an orifice nozzle, such as the effect of a change in pressure head, spray angle, spray height, orifice diameter and wall thickness on drop diameter and spray distance, is experimentally investigated and a model with which a spray nozzle can be designed is finally presented. Two prototype spray nozzles show that it is possible to enhance the performance of spray nozzles and thus wet cooling towers by means of the methods presented.

Spray Cooling of Steel Dies in a Hot Forging Process

Endres, Matthew J 04 September 2002 (has links)
"Spray cooling has been important to control die temperature in forging processes for years. One area that has had little research is how thermal stresses in a metal are related to flow characteristics of the spray. Wyman-Gordon Corporation at its North Grafton MA facility uses spray cooling to cool their die after a forging process. The current system used is found to cause cracking along the surface of the impression in the die. The purpose of this project is to compare the nozzle system used by Wyman-Gordon to selected commercially available spray nozzles, and determine if there is a better spray cooling system than the one currently used. First the flow parameters, of Sauter mean diameter, particle velocity, and volumetric spray flux were experimentally found using a laser PDA system for four water driven nozzles, including the Wyman-Gordon nozzle, and one air-atomizing nozzle. The water atomizing nozzles were tested using pressures from 30 psi to 150 psi. For the air-atomizing nozzle, the water pressure was set at 60 psi and the air pressure was varied from 30 to 150 psi. Three nozzles were chosen, the Wyman-Gordon nozzle, the smaller orifice water atomizing nozzle, the air-atomizing nozzle, and an air stream, to conduct an inverse heat conduction experiment. Using the temperature gradients created by the cooling effects of each nozzle, the heat flux and induced thermal stresses were determined. The results showed the Wyman-Gordon nozzle was causing higher thermal stresses than the air/water and water nozzles. However, the air-atomizing nozzle and air stream, due to the high temperatures that the dies are subjected to, did not cool the die quick enough to be practical. The smaller orifice water atomizing nozzle proved to be the nozzle that would cool the surface of the dies within a practical time, and induce allowable thermal stresses, sufficiently enough below the yield strength of the die material. These results, although collected specifically to study the cooling of dies at Wyman-Gordon, could be generalized to include the cooling of any test piece with a high surface temperature. "

The application technology plays a key role in agriculture as it provides a correct application of the product biologically active in the target, causing a better use of pesticides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different nozzles and spray pressures acting on tomato by quantifying the deposit and leaf coverage. Were studied the nozzles GA 11002 (flat fan air induction), TTJ 60-11002 (twin flat fan) and TT 11002 (standard flat fan), all pressures of 200, 350 and 500 kPa. For all treatments, the application rate was 180 L h-1. The percentage of leaf coverage was quantified by image analysis to detect the fluorescent tracer LRM 100 with the aid of ultraviolet light. The images were captured by a digital camera and processed by software QUANT. The deposit was quantified by extraction and quantification of tracer bright blue FD&C N° 1 by spectrophotometry. For both parameters were analyzed samples of top and bottom of the parts plant. Statistical difference only for leaf coverage, and at the top of the plant to twin flat fan nozzles showed lower coverage in less pressure. In the higher pressures there was an increase of leaf coverage favored by the formation of fine droplets medium and evaluated nozzles. In the bottom part plant coverage efficiency of foliar flat fan nozzles decreases with increasing pressure. The spray deposit was favored by increased leaf coverage.

Maria Jorgiana Ferreira Dantas 11 February 2010 (has links)

For the control of Asian soybean rust (SBR), an optimization of the application technology is necessary in order to improve spray coverage in the lower part of the crop as well as the spray drops distribution uniformity. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of flat fan nozzles with different inclinations and spray volumes on the optimization of fungicide spraying in the soybean crop, as well as on the ASR control and its effect on the crop yield. For this purpose, three experiments were conducted during 2016/17 and 2017/18 crop seasons in Botucatu, SP. Three spray nozzles were evaluated: flat fan (AXI), double flat fan (JGT) and inclined flat fan (Defy 3D) with two spray volumes (125 e 250 L ha-1). In Experiment 1, the spray distribution uniformity of the treatments was evaluated in a patternator table and the spray droplet spectrum was assessed by a real-time particle size analyzer. In Experiment 2, a quali-quantitative analysis of the spraying was evaluated, assessing spray deposits on the crop with Brilliant Blue tracer, and the spray coverage of the treatments on artificial and natural targets. Lastly, in Experiment 3, ASR incidence and severity were evaluated, in order to determine the treatment control efficacy and its effect on the soybean yield. In both spray volumes, the JGT nozzle provided lowest variation coefficient and better spray distribution. All the spray nozzles and volumes kept CV values below 7%, considered acceptable by international standards. The VMD (µm), SPAN and percentage of droplets smaller than 100 µm were influenced by the addition of fungicide associated with adjuvant to the spray mixture. Irrespective of the spray nozzle and volume, the penetration of the spray droplets into the crop canopy was impaired at R2, with low deposition and coverage in the lower part of the plant. All the spray nozzles and volumes promoted effective control of the disease, with no increment in function of a larger spray volume or spray inclination. Even with significant reduction on deposition and spray coverage on the lower region, the treatments were efficient reducing the disease severity. The level of control, although it seems effective regarding pustules number and area under the disease progress curve calculation, might not be enough to ensure greater productivity. The correct spray volume definition, especially in respect to the different crop phenological stages influences greatly in the deposition and spray coverage.

Evaluation and performance prediction of cooling tower spray zones

Viljoen, D. J. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Cooling tower spray nozzle performance characteristics such as the water distribution onto the fill material, air side pressure drop, pump head, drop size distribution and heat transfer in the spray zone were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The aim was to evaluate and simulate the performance characteristics of new and existing types of cooling tower spray nozzles with emphasis on the spray zone. Two medium and two low pressure type spray nozzles were tested and the results analysed. Single nozzle water distribution data obtained from tests was used to predict the water distribution obtained from four evenly spaced nozzles by superposition. The results were compared to data obtained from corresponding four nozzle tests. Computer codes and CFD models were developed to predict the drop trajectories, water distribution, total heat transfer and pressure drop for single nozzles and four nozzle grids. This was compared to correlated data found in literature. The performance characteristics expected from an ideal nozzle was discussed and compared to actual nozzle performance characteristics.

Relationships of pesticides, agri-aquatic systems and livelihoods : insights from Asia

Milwain, Garry K. January 2014 (has links)
In Asia, the recent rapid growth in production of higher value, more pesticide intensive, horticultural crops and inland aquatic foods in linked agri-aquatic systems poses numerous environmental, health and wider livelihood threats in these often multi-use aquatic systems. ‘Green Revolution’ technologies have enhanced food security and pesticides have been promoted, however, the sustainability of prolonged pesticide use from a functional, environmental and socio-economic perspective is increasingly questionable. Further, despite international pesticide trade agreements and country-specific legislation, illegal practices still prevail. In Thailand and Sri Lanka the influence of pesticide marketing and regulation on pesticide use and hazards was investigated. Community livelihood relationships with three very different agri-aquatic systems (in Central and Northeast Thailand and Northwest Sri Lanka), pesticide use and associated aquatic and health hazards were explored with respect to surface water use and well-being status. Quantitative and qualitative data collection methods utilised participatory community appraisals, household surveys, pesticide fate in surface waters and dietary risk assessment and modelling, key informant semi-structured interviews and stakeholder workshops, to assess these relationships. Enhanced environmental and human pesticide hazards were contributed by pesticide sales incentives and weak regulation allowing illegal practices to prevail. Preliminary risk assessments found greater aquatic and human dietary pesticide hazards within communities, with the poorest at greatest vulnerability from applying pesticide and higher dependency on threatened natural aquatic food resources. The poorest in communities were most likely to overuse pesticide in Sri Lanka and were most vulnerable to illegal practices in the pesticide industry that are often linked with unauthorised traders and credit arrangements. Most horticultural production is for fresh wholesale markets with no food safety controls, and despite growing demand for safer horticultural produce, most farmers perceive pesticides as necessary, the associated hazards low and have little knowledge of safe food production and markets. These circumstances help sustain pesticide use. Some unofficial certification and misleading labelling in the ‘safe’ fruit and vegetable sector in Thailand potentially misinforms consumers and undermines trust that may threaten pesticide reduction efforts. Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) and vegetable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) are evolving practices and techniques of producing horticultural crops with less or no pesticide, the latter sometimes through Farmer Field Schools (FFS), however, evidence of success varies. Teaching through lectures and more lengthy and costly participatory methods is evident, with the former more successful on GAP and higher educated farmers and the latter with IPM and worse-off farmers, particularly when addressed within livelihood issues as a whole. However, production scale, farmer enthusiasm, produce marketing and facilitator expertise all influence outcomes, particularly with IPM, whilst proper evaluation could improve progress. Growing rural consumer interest in organic produce offers further incentives for small to medium scale farmers to implement IPM and reduce pesticide use and hazards. As value of aquatic resources was an incentive to reducing pesticide use, particularly the most dangerous products, exploration of this component of agri-aquatic systems is another exciting prospect for empowering farming community livelihoods over established and failing fear based chemical practices. Such new practices may lead the way towards affordable and trustworthy agri-aquatic systems produce with ethical certification. Greater pesticide use savings on a wider scale come from use of efficient flat fan spray nozzles compared with conventional pesticide spray nozzles. Complementary policies and stakeholder co-operation could aid pesticide use and hazard reduction efforts. A number of recommendations arose from the research.

Moreira, Marcelo Temp 31 March 2010 (has links)
The process of agricultural production in Brazil has as a main gear the application of chemicals carried out by spraying machines. This study aimed to identify possible interactions between the tips of spraying nozzles, application time and fungicides on the control of Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Sidow) in three different cultivars. The work was carried out in Itaara - RS, spray nozzles used were XR 11002 (jet plan expanded use), TX 8002 (empty cone), TT 11002 (turbo fan), TJ60 11002 (twin flat) and AI 11002 (fan anti-drift). Applications were made at 8:00, 10:00 and 12 hours with fungicides cyproconazole+picoxystrobin and epoxiconazole+pyraclostrobin in R1 growth stage and repeated the second application 21 days after first in cultivars M-SOY 8000 RR, AL 72 and Agiara. Analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between cultivars, spray nozzles and the application time for all variables, showing that several factors affect application technology. The increase of grain yield promoted by fungicides, in the average of application times ranged between nozzles, according to the cultivar. The cultivar AL 72 results showed the smallest variation between nozzles. The increase in grain yield promoted by treatments with different nozzles ranged between 37.39 and 45.75% for the fungicide pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole and 32.38 and 39.34% for the fungicide ciproconzaol + picoxystrobin / O processo de produção agrícola no Brasil tem como uma das engrenagens principal como a aplicação de produtos químicos realizados por máquinas de pulverização.
