Analysis of Davit Structure with a Telescopic Arm of a Ship

Abstract Maritime transportation is important to national development because of Taiwan is in surrounding seas region. Therefore it is necessary that this research aimed to safety of the crane transportation system. This research investigated davit structure with a telescopic arm of a ship by means of the static analysis and modal analysis. To achieve the purpose, the researcher used the computer-aided design software Solidworks to set up this structure model. After that, he used finite element analysis software ANSYS to analyze the data. This research simulated in three situations. In static analysis, the researcher found the maximum displacement, the maximum von Mises stress and factors for safety of the structure in 16 dimensional sets in 53¢X of inclination at the davit with the telescopic arm being the shortest. After that, he discussed its tendency situation. In addition, he also checked the original structure in 53¢X of inclination at the davit with the telescopic arm being the longest and horizontal at the davit with the telescopic arm being the longest, respectively. In modal analysis, the researcher found natural frequencies and vibration shapes of the original structure. The structure had good vibration-proof ability and the resonance effect possibility not to be high. Generally, the researcher hoped that this study could provide helpful references for the relevant davit structure designers in the future.

Static Hedging Strategies For Barrier Options And Their Robustness To Model Risk

With the rapid increase in the usage of barrier options on the OTC markets, pricing and especially hedging of these exotic instruments became an important field of research. This paper aims to explain, apply and compare current methods used for pricing and hedging barrier options with a simulation approach. An overview of most popular methods for pricing and hedging is presented in the first part, followed by application of these pricing methods and comparing the performances of different dynamic and static hedging techniques in Black-Scholes environment by simulation in the second part. In the third part different models such as ARCH type and Stochastic Volatility are used with different jump terms to relax the assumptions of the Black-Scholes and examine the effects of these incomplete models on both pricing and performance of different hedging techniques. In the fourth part diffusion models such as Constant Variance Elasticity, Heston Stochastic Volatility and Merton Jump Diffusion are used to complete the picture.

Fault Calculation and Stability Analysis fora Cogeneration System in Science Park

ABSTRACT With the development of high-tech industry, the power quality has become a critical issue for the industrial customers in science park. The voltage sag and power system stability problems due to fault contingency in Taipower network has caused serious production loss. The manufacturing process platforms, which are driven by power electronics equipments may shutdown when the voltage dip exceeds 30% and it will take long time for the restoration of production. To enhance the service reliability and power quality, the new cogeneration system in Hsin Chu Science Park has been selected for case study to solve the problems of short circuit capacity and voltage sag. The short circuit analysis by both ANSI and IEC is performed to find the magnitudes of fault currents. The transient stability analysis is executed to identify the critical clearing time to support the design of protective relays for tie line tripping. The static var compensator (SVC) is also considered in the simulation to investigate the mitigation of system voltage drop due to fault contingency. It is found that the implementation of cogenerators and SVC can improve the electricity service quality for high-tech customers with proper design of industrial power systems.

The Mitigation of Voltage Flicker for Steel Factories by Static Var Compensators and Cogenerators

This investigates the voltage flicker problem of a large steel plant and presents the mitigation strategy by applying the static var compensator (SVC) and cogenerator. The fluctuation of real power and reactive power consumption by an arc furnace has been measured and recorded during the steel production process. The dynamic load model of the A/C arc furnace is derived based on the actual field data and has been included in the computer simulation by the CYME software package for load flow analysis. The block diagrams of SVC controller and the excitation system of cogenerators are considered to solve the response of reactive power compensation according to the voltage fluctuation of the control bus. To maintain the electric service reliability of arc furnace when an external utility fault occurs, the tie line tripping and load shedding is implemented to prevent the tripping of cogenerator after system disturbance. It is found that the dynamic load behavior of arc furnace in the isolated industrial power system can be well compensated by the cogenerator with adaptive control of exciter and governor to generate proper reactive power and real power according to the fluctuation of bus voltage and system frequency respectively.

An Empirical Study on Optimal Capital Structure of Listed Companies in Taiwan

Abstract The finance literature offers two major models about the capital structure of a firm. In the tradeoff model, firms tradeoff the costs and benefits of borrowing to identify their optimal capital structure and gradually move towards it. On the contrast, firms do not have an optimal capital structure in the pecking order model. The moving of the capital structure is simply the result of the financing hierarchy: retained earnings, safe debt, risky debt, and finally equity. The purpose of this study is to test whether the public firms in Taiwan have optimal capital structure. We address the question with cross-section regressions. If the tradeoff exists, moving towards the optimal capital structure will explain the change of capital structure. On the other hand ,the deficit-in funds¡]DEF¡^will explain the change of capital structure when the pecking order model exists. The empirical result shows that the public firms in Taiwan have optimal capital structure, and their realized capital structures are moving towards it, but the speed of adjustment is quite slow.

Fundamental Studies on Arc Characteristics and Erosion Mechanism of Electrical Contacts.

Abstract The arc behavior during the closing and opening of electrical contacts not only influences the surface morphology, but also causes the erosion of contact material. The mechanical stresses, the molten bridge, and the arc cause this erosion. Consequently, the erosion mechanism is very complex. Therefore, to avoid the influences of mechanical stresses and numerous arc striking, static-gap experiments with a single arc discharge are conducted to investigate the effects of pulse voltage, gap distance, and arc duration on the erosion characteristics and mechanism of silver based contact materials. Moreover, this experimental result is verified by the finding of the dynamic testing of electrical contacts. The results of the erosion characteristics show that the arcing and non-arcing regions have been distinguished at the supply voltage from 32 V to 500 V and the gap distance from 0.2 mm to 40 mm. The empirical formula for the minimum pulse voltage at arc initiation in terms of gap distance is established. When the pulse voltage is smaller than 200 V, the erosion area increases with increasing gap distance due to the action of the metallic-phase arc. However, when the pulse voltage is greater than 200 V, with increasing gap distance, the erosion area increases to a maxim, and finally diminishes due to the increase in the amount of gaseous-phase arc. The results of the erosion mechanism show that the arcing region is classified into three erosion patterns, namely, the molten metal bridge (B), metallic-phase arc (M), and gaseous-phase arc (G). At the gap distance of 0.2 mm, the erosion pattern of anode silver is varied from B, through B+M, and, M, to M+G. According to the electron transfer across triangular potential barrier, the thermionic emission causes the erosion patterns of B, B+M, and M, and mixed thermionic and field emission results in the erosion pattern of M+G. When the pulse voltage is 500 V, with increasing gap distance, the splashing of metallic particles around the anode crater becomes more dispersed, shorter with more silver powder, and finally disappeared with a little silver powder due to the influence of the gaseous-phase arc. The results of the anti-weld ability show that when the pulse voltage is 500 V and the arc energy is grater than 14 J at the static-gap experiments, the critical gap distance to produce welding for Ag-Ni, Ag-CdO, and Ag-SnO2 is 3 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm, respectively. This indicates Ag-Ni contact possesses the best anti-weld ability. On the other hand, the results of dynamic testing of electrical contacts show that at the arc energy less than 10 J, the anti-erosion, anti-weld ability, and the welding area are seen to increase with contact materials in the following order: Ag-CdO > Ag-SnO2 > Ag-Ni. However, when the arc energy is greater than 10 J, the anti-erosion, anti-weld ability, and the erosion area are seen to increase in the reverse order: Ag-SnO2 < Ag-CdO < Ag-Ni, which are in very good agreement with the results of static-gap experiments. Furthermore, the erosion surface of the silver-based contact materials can be observed and analyzed by using the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and gravitation thermal analyzer (GTA). Results show that when the arc energy is greater than 14 J, Ag-CdO and Ag-SnO2 have been decomposed into Ag-Cd and Ag-Sn alloys, respectively, which reduce their anti-weld ability. On the other hand, the welding trend has been reduced due to the dispersion of NiO on the surface of Ag-Ni contact. Consequently, the anti-erosion and anti-weld ability for the Ag-Ni contacts are better than those of the other Ag-MeO contact materials.

Concatenated codes for the multiple-input multiple-output quasi-static fading channel

The use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and/or the receiver promises greatly increased capacity. This can be useful to meet the ever growing demand of wireless connectivity, provided we can find techniques to efficiently exploit the advantages of the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. This work explores the MIMO system in a flat quasi-static fading scenario. Such a channel occurs, for example, in packet data systems, where the channel fade is constant for the duration of a codeword and changes independently from one transmission to another. We first show why it is hard to compute the true constrained modulation outage capacity. As an alternative, we present achievable lower bounds to this capacity based on existing space-time codes. The bounds we compute are the fundamental limits to the performance of these space-time codes under maximum-likelihood decoding, optimal outer codes and asymptotically long lengths. These bounds also indicate that MIMO systems have different behavior under Gaussian signaling (unconstrained input) and under the finite alphabet setting. Our results naturally suggest the use of concatenated codes to approach near-capacity performance. However, we show that a system utilizing an iterative decoder has a fundamental limit – it cannot be universal and therefore it cannot perform arbitrarily close to its outage limit. Next, we propose two different transceiver structures that have good performance. The first structure is based on a novel BCJR-decision feedback decoder which results in performance within a dB of the outage limit. The second structure is based on recursive realizations of space-time trellis codes and uses iterative decoding at the receiver. This recursive structure has impressive performance even when the channel has time diversity. Thus, it forms the basis of a very flexible and robust MIMO transceiver structure.

Theory versus experiment of the rotordynamic and leakage characteristics of smooth annular bushing oil seals

This thesis provides a comparison of experimental rotordynamic coefficients for laminar, smooth bushing oil seals to theoretical predictions from XLLubeGT and XLAnSeal. The experimental results come from a new test rig developed at the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University. The two software programs were developed to predict the static and dynamic characteristics of seals. XLLubeGT is a Reynolds equation based program while XLAnSeal is based on a bulk-flow Navier- Stokes model that includes temporal and convective acceleration terms. XLAnSeal was used to predict the added-mass terms of the seals since XLLubeGT assumes those terms to be zero or negligible. The data used for input into the two seals code was the actual measured conditions from the test rig. As part of the input parameters, inlet inertia effects and thermal gradients along the seal were included. Both XLLubeGT and XLAnSeal have the capability to analyze straight bore seals with different inlet and outlet clearances – essentially a tapered seal – but seal expansion caused by the radial differential pressure across the seal bushing was not included. Theoretical and experimentally determined dynamic characteristics include stiffness, damping, inertia terms and Whirl Frequency Ratio (WFR). Seal static characteristics are also reported. They include: leakage, shaft center line loci and Reynolds numbers. Test conditions include three shaft speeds: 4000, 7000 and 10,000 rpm, three test pressures: 21, 45 and 69 bar [300, 650, and 1000 psi] and multiple eccentricities from 0.0 to 0.7. The results for the dynamic characteristics show good correlation of the experimental data to the theoretical values up to an eccentricity of about 0.5. At higher eccentricities, the theory generally under-predicts the dynamic characteristics. Inertia terms are greatly under-predicted. The results for the static characteristics also show good correlation to the experimental data, but they also have a tendency to be under-predicted at higher eccentricities.

The fishery of the shrimp Acetes intermedius in the southwestern coast of Taiwan has long history , and it is the food of many species of fishes and large-scale shrimps . Shrimp Acetes has not only fallen on dead ears , but also been ignored its importantce of ecologyical status in the southwestern coast by the academia because of less harvest and output value in the past . It then comes into operation the management of catch , leading the price going up and output value increasing rapidly when the establishment of TungKang producer organization of the shrimp Acetes intrmedius in 1994 , and it also becomes the important seasonal fishery . According to as was mentioned above , the study is based on the theory of biology and economy to put out the open access model , static optimization model and dynamic optimization of fishery mathematical models , and further discuss the problem of fishery management. In connection with getting the equilibrium of resource stock and effort , research data from the substitution of real data are mainly analyzed by compareative statues on exogenous variable .By means of understanding the sensitivity of variation on endogenous variable depending on exogenous variable , we can provide the member of TungKang producer organization of the shrimp Acetes intrmedius with the control on harvest and preservation of stock . The study can get the fact that the management of TungKang producer organization of the shrimp Acetes intrmedius has the notion of sustainable administration by the deriveation of theoretical model and the simulate analysis of historyical data. I hope the management of TungKang producer organization of the shrimp Acetes intrmedius can be popularized.
