The Trinitarian Dimensions of Cistercian Eucharistic Theology

Peters, Nathaniel Nashamoies Landon January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Boyd T. Coolman / William of Saint-Thierry, Isaac of Stella, and Baldwin of Forde created a distinctly Cistercian body of Eucharistic theology in the twelfth century. But despite one article that examines none of the Eucharistic treatises and omits Isaac and Baldwin, there is no scholarly account of Cistercian Eucharistic theology. Nor is there more generally a historical work that examines the connection between medieval Trinitarian and Eucharistic theology. This dissertation seeks to fill both lacunae. The introduction of the dissertation sets the historical and scholarly context for investigation. Chapter 1 examines the thought of William of Saint-Thierry, who has the most developed understanding of Eucharistic presence, conversion, and reception. It also treats the connections William draws between Eucharistic reception and meditation on scripture and the passion of Christ. Chapter 2 treats Isaac of Stella, who uses more intellectualist imagery and imagery of the mystical body of Christ. Chapter 3 studies Baldwin of Forde, who argues that the term transubstantiation best describe Eucharistic conversion. Baldwin emphasizes reception by faith in the truth about Christ. Chapter 5 offers a brief conclusion. These Cistercian authors thought that the character of God as a Trinity of persons united in essence provides the form or structure of the economy of salvation—especially its turning point or climax, the Eucharist. This emphasis on Trintiarian dimensions is the hallmark of Cistercian Eucharistic theology. They saw the Eucharist as an analogue to the Incarnation, a site where the economic missions of the Trinity take place. In the Eucharist, God the Father draws those who receive to himself by uniting them to the body and blood of the Son. This unity brings an increase of unity with the Holy Spirit. Once united to the Son and Spirit, the faithful are united to the Father and to the unity that all three persons share. The Eucharist is, then, not only a site of God’s movement toward human beings, but of human movement back toward God. It acts as a kind of pivot point in the economy of salvation: the moment where the outpouring of the Son and Spirit join most deeply with the faithful and draw them back to the Father. The Eucharist also binds the members of the Church, the body of Christ, to each other and to their Head in his act of self-offering to the Father. It connects the meditation, sacrifices, and offering of their own lives to that of Christ, with which they are offered to the Father.

Simulation Modeling of a Tropical Cave Ecosystem

Cotter, Hannah B 01 January 2015 (has links)
The Tamana Cave system in Trinidad is relatively unaffected by the environment outside of the cave walls, like most cave ecosystems. Since a very limited amount of light can enter the cave, bat movement controls the temperature cycle rather than the solar radiation that controls it in the surrounding forest. Similarly, the ecosystem cannot be sustained by energy from photosynthesis and so the main source of energy comes from the guano produced by the insectivorous bat species, N. tumidirostris. The frugivorous bat species, P. hastatus, also roosts inside of the cave, but the wetness of the top level of its guano prevents the guano from being suitable for cockroach consumption and therefore ends the flow of energy through the system. STELLA software was used to create a model consisting of three stacked logistic growth equations that demonstrate the ecosystem of Tamana cave. The model focuses on the population of insectivorous bats, on the guano that this species produces, and on the cockroach species, E. distanti. The model provides insight into the population dynamics and environmental processes at play in the cave, and is useful in predicting the behavior of the ecosystem. After running the model under a number of different scenarios, the graphs were used to visually display the effects of altering inputs in the system. These altered inputs represent hypothetical changes that could occur in a natural system such as a lowered intrinsic rate of increase bat population, an increase in initial bat population, or a decrease in the amount of guano that each cockroach needs to survive.

Opartiskt berättande : En ny mall för dokumentärfilm / Objective storytelling : A new guideline for documentary film

Mattsson, Gustav January 2013 (has links)

System Dynamics Simulation Model of Salmonella Contamination of Broiler Carcasses in the Chill Tank of a Poultry Processing Plant

Galarneau, Karen Dazo 14 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Salmonella has been studied and researched for more than a hundred years and yet it remains a problem for human and animal health. The goal of this dissertation was to apply the systems thinking approach to Salmonella contamination and develop a System Dynamics (SD) simulation model for Salmonella contamination in the chill tank of a poultry processing plant. But first the appropriate carcass rinse sampling method that would not impact on the resulting Salmonella contamination status of the broiler carcass was studied. Kappa agreement analysis was used to evaluate three sampling methods. The adjacent rinse method was found to be the best method. In the absence of actual data, literature data was used to develop a literature-based SD simulation model of Salmonella contamination of broiler carcasses in the chill tank. The literature-based SD model is the first application of system dynamics simulation modeling in the poultry-processing field. The model was able to show and simulate the dynamic and non-linear interrelationships between parameters, namely pH, chlorine (Cl) level, water flow and turbidity. Actual data collection was done using a specially designed apparatus that recorded the time, temperature, pH, chlorine, water flow and turbidity in the chill tank as carcass rinse samples were collected. Linear regression analysis was used to identify the statistically significant models for relationships between the parameters in the chill tank. Finally, the data was analyzed using logistic regression to determine the association between the parameters in the chill tank and the occurrence of Salmonellaa in carcasses exiting the chill tank. These results were used to develop a data-based SD model. The data-based model was then validated using the validity tests proposed by various authors for SD simulation models and found to be a valid model. The developed model offers a fresh perspective to the problem of Salmonella contamination- to view it as a system of factors that are interrelated and have a feedback mechanism, rather than the traditional concept of linear causation. The developed model is a powerful cost efficient tool for testing interventions for reducing Salmonella contamination in the poultry processing plant.

This study aimed to develop a model usinf dynamic systems, thus proposing a tool that allows the analysis of water resources sustainability at Promissão, state of São Paulo. This water management model will help managers of the Gonzaga Stream watershed and the municipal company responsible for the management and distribution of treated water and sewage, to decision making with better basis as it allows a systemic view the municipality of supply process. To develop the model, systemic methodology was used which is a valuable tool for water resources managers, it allows the prediction of future scenarios of supply and wastewater treatment and enables the development and implementation of public policies. STELLA software (Structural Learning Laboratory Experimental Thinking with Animation), version 9.1.3, was used to develop the dynamic model. To design and mechanical validation of the developed model, the current water resources management in the municipality data were used. The model was the "Water Resources Model Promissão (WRM-PROMI)." To analyze the water resources sustainability Promissão municipality through the results generated by the MRH-PROMI were prepared five scenarios with adverse situations and analyzed the behavior of the elements involved in the offer process and municipal demand in every situation. The model allows water managers make plans to avoid potential problems related to the new scenario or develop projects with information generated by the model for maintaining and improving the use of these resources. For each scenario we calculated the sustainability index (SI) which allowed us to know if the water would continue or not sustainable in the period from 2005 to 2050. After analyzing the behavior of the variables of the five scenarios, it was concluded that currently, water resources Promissão municipality meets its demands sustainably with an average performance, using about 40% of its capacity.

Portfolio of compositions [music] : Rothko's red (orchestral tone poem) ; The portrait : a musical tribute to Stella Bowen (music theatre work) / Becky Llewellyn

Llewellyn, Rebecca Ann January 2007 (has links)
The portfolio contains two of Becky Llewellyn’s music compositions: an orchestral tone poem and a chamber opera score and libretto created to explore the process of producing a major work of music theatre from conception to performance. In both works, Llewellyn’s research has concentrated on her interest in structure and form between ideas, music and visual art and their relationship to each other. Rothko’s Red The first composition in her submission is her orchestral tone poem, Rothko’s Red, a tribute to US artist Mark Rothko, whose painting techniques questioned traditional forms of narrative and structure. The topographical matrix of Rothko’s Red contains vertical aural space introduced in a ‘keyed up’ range suggesting ‘redness’, gradually deepening until the bass predominates, retaining a widened spaciality at the peak moment. Horizontally, the piece is a long crescendo of extended phrases, at first lightweight, then filling out with each repetition, moving to a full expression of orchestral magnitude, then gradually subsiding. The tone poem passes limited melodies and harmonies around to and within the orchestral families, as if in one colour. Llewellyn’s use of individual dynamics for orchestral players is an experiment in aural equivalence of Rothko techniques, using ‘heard’, not ‘seen’ tone colours. The Portrait: a musical tribute to Stella Bowen Llewellyn’s chamber opera is based on books, letters, diaries and family history research into the life of Adelaide-born writer and painter, Stella Bowen and three other writers. The opera’s libretto is structured as a series of songs reflecting Bowen’s paintings and life story. The chamber opera opens and closes in 1944, with Bowen as a WWII Australian war artist. The opera spans from 1917, when as a London art student, Bowen is introduced to editor/writer, Ford Madox Ford with whom she falls in love. The opera moves through to Paris and Ford’s subsequent love affair with writer Jean Rhys and his death in 1939. The Portrait is an exploration of how we know who we are and how, as artists, we choose to represent those insights. As the four main characters each wrote about themselves and each other, Llewellyn used their distinct content, style and aesthetic concerns to invent their musical and dramatic personae. The Portrait plays with ideas these four artists explored of extended metaphors, a shifting ambiguity in ‘artifice as a real story’, in an imagined dramatic musical work about real artists and writers; life as art and art as life. Among other themes in The Portrait; thanatos and eros, culture and morality, war and peace, fate and choice and opera as portraiture, is an underlying structural theme of time itself. Mythic time is explored as fairytale. Historical time ranges from 1920s chordal and dance motifs back to associations of medieval castles, where western-style Romantic love began. Personal, subjective experience of time is explored by most characters, as is the lack of artistic time given domestic commitments. Objective ‘time as limited’ is explored with Ford’s death and the impending death of the Australian bomber crew. Llewellyn focuses on the timebased art-form of music, while incorporating words, Bowen’s paintings and archival photographs in a chamber opera that explores the potential each art-form carries for revelation. / Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 2007
