Hadrous, Ayat January 2020 (has links)
AbstractFor this study, Swedish law cases have been investigated that concern Muslim women with headscarf who experience discrimination based on religious symbols. The aim of the study has been to create understanding and develop knowledge about Muslim women with headscarves in Swedish society. The method used is qualitative content analysis of Swedish law cases. The results of the empirical analysis show that there are events in the legal cases that can give an indication of the occurrence, expression and effect of discrimination. The rationale of the employer or manager shows how Muslim women with headscarves can be discriminated against and stigmatized. The expressions that come up in the court cases and that have been analyzed show an effect of discrimination / exclusion of Muslim women with headscarves. The result of the empirical analysis shows how a workplace / organization that has a clothing policy that prohibits all types of headgear, in practice disadvantages Muslim women who wear religious symbols (headscarves). The result also shows how Muslim women with headscarves have been harassed in the workplace as well as had experiences of individual everyday racism. The effect of individual everyday racism shows how negative beliefs and prejudices are about Muslim women with headscarves. As a social identity, women become visible with their headscarves and, as a result, they live a kind of symbolic oppression on the part of the majority.Key words: discrimination, exclusion / stigmatization, individual everyday racism, headscarf
