  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

Robust multithreaded applications

Napper, Jeffrey Michael 29 August 2008 (has links)
This thesis discusses techniques for improving the fault tolerance of multithreaded applications. We consider the impact on fault tolerance methods of sharing address space and resources. We develop techniques in two broad categories: conservative multithreaded fault-tolerance (C-MTFT), which recovers an entire application on the failure of a single thread, and optimistic multithreaded fault-tolerance (OMTFT), which recovers threads independently as necessary. In the latter category, we provide a novel approach to recover hung threads while improving recovery time by managing access to shared resources so that hung threads can be restarted while other threads continue execution. / text

A scanning grating technique for measurement of submicron focused spots

Mortimer, Beth Ann, 1965- January 1988 (has links)
Many applications in optical research require the use of diffraction limited point images with reduced spot sizes. The instrumentation that evaluates these small diameter images must have high resolution (sub-micron) capabilities. One method used to measure sub-micron optical point images is a scanning grating technique. However, many characteristics of this measurement technique have not been fully examined. In this paper, the sensitivity of this measurement technique to the scanning mechanism, beam characteristics, and grating tilt is evaluated.

Development of thermal energy storage and cooker module for the integrated solar energy project.

Sulaiman, Abdulsalam S. A. January 2008 (has links)
Large percentages of the South African population have no access to grid power and are located at distances that make provision for such facility uneconomical. Also traditional fuels are under pressure. Most areas in South Africa receive 300 days of sunshine per year. The proposed solar system addresses the needs of such communities. A solar thermal energy storage system utilizing phase change material has been proposed that can overcome the time mismatch between solar availability and demand. The system consists of two types of thermal heat storage. The latent heat storage used Phase Change Materials (PCM) which melts at a sufficiently high temperature for cooking a variety of food types. By choosing a suitable PCM to take advantage of the latent heat absorbed during phase changes. Heat losses from both the latent heat storage and condenser are captured in the surrounding sensible heat store. The objective of this project to develop a prototype modules which together as a system could provide the essential domestic power requirements of the target groups. This includes power for cooking, hot water and in addition a limited electrical power supply for the system itself as well as for other minor loads. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.
