Media museum :

Russo, Angelina. Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between existing museum exhibition development strategies and the potential practices which arise from the virtualisation of the museum. It does so within the context of the new disciplines which are the phenomena of new media practices, the discourses surrounding exhibition development and broader changes to museum provenance, patrimony, collection and display. / Focusing on the establishment of an exhibition discourse within diversifying new media environments, the thesis proposes a theoretical framework of textual strategies and spatial sequences which emerge from the virtualisation of the museum. The research investigates the semiotic structures which enable museum display to be conceived of as a text and proposes methods of visual analysis which can be used to evaluate exhibition as a communication form. A series of spatial and temporal sequences of virtual display are derived from theoretical exploration and case-evaluation. These form the basis of the development of the notion of sites of virtual display. Situated within an interdisciplinary framework, the research aims to contribute to exhibition development praxis by identifying generic and specific factors which contextualise the development of virtual display. / The thesis tests the theoretical framework of textual strategies and spatial sequences through the development of an ontology of virtual display. The ontology is tested through education materials developed within a social constructivist pedagogical model. Using qualitative methods, the studies test the validity of the ontology as a model for situating reflective practices within museum exhibition design. The model is intended to inform the ways in which new media technologies are applied in the museum exhibition environment. / The research responds to the challenges posed by new media technologies in negotiating and appropriating techniques of communication and display in the museum exhibition environment. / Thesis (PhDArchitectureandDesign)--University of South Australia, 2004.

Cataloging Tailings Dams in Arizona

Chernoloz, Oleksiy, Chernoloz, Oleksiy January 2017 (has links)
Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and conventional water retaining dams are the largest manmade structures on Earth. Statistics show that TSFs are more likely to fail than water retaining dams.Recent catastrophic failures of TSFs have led to the loss of lives (Germano mine, Brazil), environmental damage (Mount Polley, Canada), contamination of drinking water (Baia Mare, Romania), and the destruction of property (Kingston Fossil Plant, USA). As the scale of mining increases, TSFs increase in height and volume, therefore increasing the consequence of failure. To help mitigate risk associated with large TSFs mining companies empanel expert groups to review operations of TSFs and conduct regular visual inspections. In the US the Mine Safety and Health Administration has regulatory responsibility for the safety of TSFs. As population centers expand nearer to existing and proposed TSFs, the public requires assurance of the integrity of these structures. A pro-active approach to public safety is more desirable than a post-mortem analysis after a major failure. We have examined both the regulatory practices, the industry practices, and public data on TSFs in Arizona. In this thesis paper we address inadequacies of the official government records on TSFs in the two largest publicly accessible databases of dams inthe US – the National Inventory of Dams (NID), and the National Performance of Dams Program (NPDP). Both databases contain numerous errors and omissions, including descriptions and geographic coordinates of TSFs that are inaccurate by many kilometers. Several large TSFs in Arizona are not included in either database. We address these shortcomings with a pilot project for Arizona that demonstrates recording accurate information in a database is neither expensive nor onerous, communicating best practices for operation can help alleviate community concerns, and continuous monitoring technology can resolve shortcomings with visual inspections.

A business plan for Mobile self storage

Collins, P. N. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the United States nearly one in every ten households rents a self storage unit and the industry had a gross turn-over of 22.6 billion dollars in 2006 (Self Storage Industry Fact Sheet, 2007). The success of the industry has lead to an extension of the conventional mortar and brick facilities to container-like mobile units. These units are transported to the customers so that customers have the freedom to load their furniture and house appliances, for storage, themselves. The container unit is then collected by truck and transported to a storage facility located in an inexpensive area. The main difference of the mobile Self-Storage facility to conventional facilities is the convenience that it provides the client and the cost benefit to the mobile storage owner. The aim of this research report is to provide the company, Mobile Storage SA (Pty) Ltd, with a practical business plan to be used to as a guide to implement the business and as supporting documentation to raise the necessary capital.

Natural Gas Storage Valuation

Li, Yun 16 November 2007 (has links)
In this thesis, one methodology for natural gas storage valuation is developed and two methodologies are improved. Then all of the three methodologies are applied to a storage contract. The first methodology is called "intrinsic rolling with spot and forward", which takes both the spot and forward prices into account in the valuation. This method is based on the trading strategy by which a trader locks the spot and forward positions by solving an optimization problem based on the market information on the first day. In the following days, the trader can obtain added value by adjusting the positions based on new market information. The storage value is the sum of the first day's value and the added values in the following days. The problem can be expressed by a Bellman equation and solved recursively. A crucial issue in the implementation is how to compute the expected value in the next period conditioned on the information in current period. One way to compute the expected value is Monte Carlo simulation with ordinary least square regression. However, if all of the state variables, spot, and forward prices are incorporated in the regression there are too many terms, and the regression becomes uncontrollable. To solve this issue, three risk factors are chosen by performing principle component analysis. Dimension of the regression is greatly reduced by only incorporating the three risk factors. Both the second methodology and the third methodology only consider the spot price in the valuation. The second methodology uses Monte Carlo simulation with ordinary least square regression, which is based on the work of Boogert and Jong (2006). The third methodology uses stochastic dual dynamic programming, which is based on the work of Bringedal (2003). However, both methodologies are improved to incorporate bid and ask prices. Price models are crucial for the valuation. Forward prices of each month are assumed to follow geometric Brownian motions. Future spot price is also assumed to follow a geometric Brownian motion but for a specific month its expectation is set to the corresponding forward price on the valuation date. Since the simulation of spot and forward prices is separated from the storage optimization, alternative spot and forward models can be used when necessary. The results show that the value of the storage contract estimated by the first methodology is close to the market value and the value estimated by the Financial Engineering Associates (FEA) provided function. A much higher value is obtained when only spot price is considered, since the high volatility of the spot curve makes frequent position change profitable. However in the reality traders adjust their positions less frequently.

Geochemistry of Gold One tailings and associated contaminant transport into the Randfontein area, Witwatersrand Basin.

Abrahams, Jamie-Leigh Robin January 2017 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Earth Science) / The city of Randfontein, in the Witwatersrand, hosts several slimes and tailings storage facilities which pose potential threat to the environment in the form of acid mine drainage (AMD). The latter, readily scavenges toxic metals, contaminating surrounding soils and water resources, thereby potentially compromising the overall environmental- and public health of the area. To this end, three slimes sections (section T001, T002 and T003) from the Gold One Millsite Slimes Complex were investigated, with the aim of understanding metal release from the slimes dam into the Randfontein area. To achieve this, the mineralogical and geochemical factors controlling metal release were investigated using combined core log analysis, cluster and discriminant analysis, x-ray diffraction analysis, bulk geochemical analysis, acid base accounting methods and selective sequential extraction procedures.
