CFD Study of An Office Room Equipped with Corner Impinging Jet VentilationWodaje, Getiye January 2022 (has links)
A CFD validation study was made using corner supplied impinging jet ventilation operating in cooling mode. The air distribution system has two equilateral triangle shaped inlets placed 80cm above the floor at the two that share a common wall. The supply air was introduced at 2.26m/s. The temperature of the supply air at one of the inlets was slightly higher than the other. The room air velocity and temperature profiles were studied using realizable k-e, RNG k-e, k-e SST and v2-f turbulence models and compared with experimental values. Generally, the agreement between the experimental measurement data of the room air temperatures and velocities and the CFD results was very good in all turbulence models. However, the RNG k-e turbulence model showed better correlation with average errors of 1.9% and 2.8% in predicting temperature and velocity respectively. Possibility of local thermal discomfort with the indoor air were investigated using the Fanger’s thermal comfort indices and draught rate while the air quality was evaluated by the mean age of air and the diffusion coefficient. The thermal comfort indices were computed using a user-defined function and the mean age of air was computed by user- defined scalar that solves a partial differential equation that uses the source diffusivity and calculate the residence time of air in the room. The results show that there is a higher risk of draft at the ankle level (close to 20%) and the room air is freshest near the lower region at the centre of the room. The room air is oldest at the region close to the ceiling in the area between the two mannequins. The study concludes that a satisfactory prediction of thermal stratification and velocity fields can made for evaluating the indoor thermal comfort and air quality using RANS based turbulence models.

Estudo fenomenológico e numérico do escoamento estratificado óleo-água ondulado e com mistura na interface / Phenomenological and numerical study of wavy stratified oil-water pipe flow with interfacial mixingÁvila, Ricardo Pereira de 11 March 2016 (has links)
Two-phase flows are present in many natural and industrial processes, such as in the oil industry. The stratified oil-water flow has been used as a convenient way to avoid the formation of emulsions of water in oil and have a common occurrence in directional oil wells. When the interfacial wave exceeds a certain geometric and kinematic limit the phenomenon of drop entrainment arises at the interface, causing an increase of pressure drop. Models have been presented in the literature in an attempt to describe the phenomenon of drop entrainment. In this work, we present a new method for the one-dimensional mathematical modeling of entrainment in order to improve the prediction of oil volume fraction and pressure drop. It was also used a commercial computational fluid dynamics tool (CFD) to obtain the values of flow parameters of wavy stratified oil-water flow, such as oil volume fraction, pressure drop, amplitude and length of the interfacial waves. The results of the phenomenological modeling for entrainment and CFD were compared with experimental databases. The CFD results are in agreement with the experimental results in both the qualitative analysis of the geometric properties of the interfacial waves and in direct comparison with oil-volumetric-fraction and pressure-drop data. The numerical results of the phenomenological model for entrainment factors are in agreement with data from the literature.

Interaction between Flow Induced Pulsations and Multiphase Flows in Gas Liquid Systems / Oscillations auto-induites en systèmes de conduites en présence d’écoulement diphasique air/eauSanna, Francesco 15 April 2016 (has links)
Coupling between flow instabilities and acoustic resonances in ducts with closed side branches leads to Flow Induced Pulsations (FIPs). This is a typical phenomenon in engineering applications (gas transport systems, compressor installations, and chemical plants). The objective of this work is to extend the knowledge about FIPs when the transported medium is not uniquely gas but a combination of gas and (a small quantity of) liquid. For two configurations of double side branches (in tandem and in quasi-cross), the amplitude of pressure pulsations in the side branches was measured for different liquid injection rates. This was repeated with the liquid injection point located at different places to allow different flow regimes at the pipe connections. The results show a strong effect of the water content on the pulsations. On basis of these results and additional measurements, the following hypotheses for the effect of liquid were made: (1) interaction of the liquid with the flow instability and (2) increase of the acoustical damping in the ducts in presence of liquid. The effect of liquid on damping was measured with a dedicated test setup designed to have a stratified flow. It was found that the liquid always increases the acoustical damping, mainly due to the reduction of the effective cross section by the liquid, and because of the increased turbulent friction at the interface between gas and liquid.

Dynamique des tourbillons pour quelques modèles de transport non-linéaires / Vortex dynamics for some non-linear transport modelsHassainia, Zineb 08 June 2015 (has links)
In this dissertation, we are concerned with the study of some non-linear evolution models arising in fluid mechanics. We distinguish three independent parts. The first part of the thesis deals with the existence of the rotating vortex patches (called also V-states) for an inviscid quasi-geostrophic model. Our study is divided into two chapters dealing with different topological structures of the V-states. In the first chapter we study the simply connected case and we prove the existence of such structures in a neighborhood of the Rankine vortices by using the bifurcation theory. In the second chapter we discuss the doubly connected case where the patches admit only one hole. More precisely, close to a given annulus we describe this family by countable branches bifurcating from this annulus at some explicit angular velocities related to Bessel functions of the first kind. Our theoretical study was completed by numerical simulations on the limiting V-states and a number of interesting numerical observation were formulated opening new research perspectives. The second part of the thesis concerns the local well-posedness theory for the inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data. The problem is in some sense critical due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-density formulation. We give a positive answer for a special sub-class of Yudovich data including smooth and singular vortex patches. In the last part we address the problem of the incompressible limit for the 2D isentropic fluids associated to ill-prepared initial data and for which the vortices are not necessarily bounded and belong to some weighted BMO spaces. We mainly use two ingredients: On one hand, the Strichartz estimates to control the acoustic part and prove that it does not contribute for low Mach number. On the other hand, we use the transport compressible structure of the vorticity and we establish a linear propagation estimate in the spirit of a recent work of Bernicot and Keraani conducted in the incompressible case. Transport Phenomena in Complex Two and Three-Phase Flow SystemsAkbar, Muhammad Khalid 22 November 2004 (has links)
Two and three-phase flow processes involving gas, liquid and solid, are common in nature and industry, and include some of the most complex and poorly-understood transport problems. In this research hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer processes in complex two and three-phase flows were investigated. The interfacial surface area concentration in a short vertical column subject to the through flow of fiber-liquid-gas slurry was experimentally measured using the gas absorption technique. The experimental data were statistically analyzed for parametric effects, and were empirically correlated. The absorption of a gaseous species by a slurry droplet with internal circulation and containing reactive micro-particles was simulated, and parametrically studied. The micro-particles were found to enhance the absorption rate. The absorption rate was sensitive to droplet recirculation, and shrinkage of particles with time resulted in declining absorption rates. The transport of soot particles, suspended in laminar hot gas flowing in a tube, was modeled and parametrically studied. Due to coupled thermal radiation and thermophoresis, a radially-nonuniform temperature profile develops, leading to sharp, non-uniform radial soot-concentration profiles. The assumption of monodisperse particles leads to over-prediction of thermophoresis. The transport and removal of particles suspended in bubbles rising in a stagnant liquid pool were modeled based on a Eulerian – Monte Carlo method. The bubble hydrodynamics were treated in Eulerian frame, using the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) technique, while particle equations of motion were numerically solved in Lagrangian frame. The bubbles undergo shape change, and have complex internal circulation, all of which influence the particle removal. Model predictions were also compared with experimental data. Using a resemblance between two-phase flow in microchannels, and in large channels at microgravity, a simple Weber number-based two-phase flow regime map was developed for microchannels. Based on the available air-water experimental data, a criterion for the prediction of conditions that lead to flow regime transition out of the stratified-wavy flow pattern in horizontal annular channels was proposed. The thermocapillary effects on liquid-vapor interface shape during heterogeneous bubble ebullition in microchannels were analytically studied.
