Transitional tectonics : early Laramide strike-slip deformation of the Northeastern Front Range, Colorado

Wharton, Goodwin Christopher 20 July 2012 (has links)
The early Laramide tectonic history and Proterozoic metamorphic history of the northeastern Colorado Front Range were examined using kinematic data from minor faults at 25 locations, and U-Th/He dating of apatite from 2 samples (3 unsuccessful) supported by optical petrography, X-ray maps and geothermometry. The role of strike-slip faulting in Laramide uplift of the eastern flank of the northern Front Range was analyzed through kinematic analysis of 97 minor (<100 m trace) faults. The dominant fault population was oriented approximately perpendicular to bedding, with lineations sub-parallel to bedding. Rotating bedding to horizontal showed these faults to have the pattern of a strike-slip conjugate set. Unfolded left-lateral faults have an average orientation of (287, 87N) with lineations to (287, 01); right-lateral faults have an orientation of (065, 88S) with lineations to (245, 00). The timing of motion on these faults postdates 98 Ma deposition of Dakota group sandstones, and predates the folds that rotated them (68 Ma from the age of synorogenic conglomerates). The conclusion is that strike-slip motion was active during the earliest Laramide. The principal strain axes from these faults, after rotation, give an average shortening axis orientation of (276, 03) and an average extension direction of (006, 02). The calculated shortening axis orientation is consistent with that of later Laramide deformation, supporting the hypothesis that strike-slip deformation occurred in the northeast Front Range during the earliest Laramide. Analysis of minor faults on part of the eastern flank of the northern Front Range shows that strike-slip faulting was a locally important deformation mechanism at the onset of the Laramide orogeny. Principal strain axis analysis suggests that the regional tectonic regime was one of east-west shortening and north-south extension prior to the onset of the main phase of Laramide deformation, at which time the regional strain field rotated to one of east-west shortening and vertical extension. Twenty-seven thin-sections of Big Thompson Canyon metapelites were petrologically characterized prior to selection for mineral separation and U-Th/He analysis of apatite. All samples show late high-temperature static recrystallization that has partially recovered prior fabrics. At high grades, sillimanite porphyroblasts overgrow all fabrics. X-ray maps and geothermometry were also conducted to enhance the characterization of the sample suite. Garnet-biotite phase equilibria indicate that initial prograde metamorphism took place at approximately 550 °C. Apatites separated from five of the twenty-seven samples analyzed in thin section were analyzed for U-Th/He thermochronometry. Three samples returned no plausible results; one sample returned one plausible age; and one sample returned three similar and plausible ages. Basement rocks cooled through the closure temperatures for helium and fission-tracks in apatite nearly simultaneously, at about 55 Ma. These temperatures, 40 and 60 °C respectively, correspond to depths of ~ 1.5 and 2.5 km. Laramide exhumation of the Northern Front Range was very rapid. Estimates of minimum magnitude of exhumation during Laramide time may need to be increased from ~2 km to ~3 km. / text

The phenomena of the strike in Nigeria : 1960-83

Yusuf, A. January 1986 (has links)
Strikes are one form of Inaustrial-conflict - furthermore they are distinctive in that they are the ultimate and dramatic action; viz, they bring about a stoppage of work. It is evident that .strikes in Nigeria have been transformed from a purely factory level issue to one of national concern and involvement. Various theories and propositions are advanced to explain how strike activity takes an increasing or decreasing pattern. The major ones (considered in ~his study) being the measures of strike activity choosen, economic and institutional variables and state intervention. The basic measures of strike activity are interdependent but explain differen aspects of the strike. For instance the "Number of Strikes" measure shows the volatility of conflicts, the "Number of Workers Involved" and "Number of Days Lost" measures shows the extent of militancy and the degree of stubbornness of the parties involved respectively. So, for a comprehensive study of the phenomenon all the measures may have to be used. The major economic variables that feature in most studies of strikes include, the business cycle as depicted by boom and recession; unemployment; level of wages and cost of living. In case of a boom, strikes are expected to be frequent but short, and usually concern economic issues especially increases in wages (because of the buoyant economic conditions). By contrast, in recession (usually accompanied by unemployment) strikes will be less frequent, long and on non- economic issues, e.g job protection. There is the notion also that inflation and high costs of living increase the level of strikes. The Nigerian experience however is contrary to these expectations. The institutional elements related to strikes in Nigeria which are considered here are Trade Unions and the Collective Bargaining machinery. Organised unionism is found not to be a pre-requisite for strike actions, and overall size did not influence the occurence of industrial action. However the re-structuring of trade unions did increase the capacity of unions in the conduct of strikes. The institution of collective bargaining has been established to a recogniseable extent in Nigeria, but it did not eliminate strikes although it has minimised their occurence. It is also evident that state intervention in Labour-Management relations is extremely high, the extent is such that third party dis~ute resolution machinary is·~ introduced making strlkes illegal, but that cannot ,and does not bring industrial harmony. On the whole thes~ influential variables are inconsistent in their relationship with strike activit¥; they are themselves influenced by local environmental condltions. However the most importan~si~gle factor that shaped strikes in Nigeria is the effect of the various wage commissions •

A Study of the Roles of American Teacher Organizations in Dealing with Controversial Events Related to Teachers

Li, Wun-chi 13 September 2006 (has links)
The main purposes of this study are (1) to clarify the function of NEA and AFT and original source of law, concrete action, and case study relating to teachers¡¦ rights. (2) to explore the roles of American teacher organizations in dealing with controversial events related to teachers. (3) to discuss the strategies American teacher organizations adopt in striving for the rights of teachers. (4) to make recommendations to the development of teacher organizations in Taiwan. The scope of this study includes three important controversial events related to teachers: charter school, strike and takeover. Moreover, the subjects of the study are as following: (1)charter school: Minnesota, Michigan, Washington;(2)strike: Philadelphia School District, Detroit School District, Chicago School District;(3)takeover: Cleveland School District, Philadelphia School District, Newark School District. In order to achieve the above purposes, this study had adopted content analysis and Bereday¡¦s comparative studies. Firstly, to describe and interpret the subjects of the study. Secondly, four tentative conclusions were achieved: 1. Because local teacher organizations are affiliated with different teacher organizations (NEA or AFT), they pay attention to different educational issues. 2. When teacher organizations deal with controversial events related to teachers, they adopt systematic strategies and steps. 3. The criteria whether teacher organizations support or oppose the controversial events is based on self-interest and the quality of public education. 4. The trend of the merge of NEA and AFT affects the cooperation of two teacher organizations and their local organizations in dealing with controversial events related to teachers. To support the four hypotheses above, four findings were concluded: 1. The operation of teacher organizations is accordance with systemic strategic. 2. The controversial events which teacher organizations oppose usually violate teachers¡¦ rights and public education. 3. The cooperation among teacher organizations is the trend of changing time. 4. The role of teacher organizations deeply affects the educational reform of nation. Finally, suggestions based on the research findings were proposed to the educational authorities, teacher organizations, and future research.
