Vegetative covers for sediment control and phosphorus sequestration from dairy waste application fieldsGiri, Subhasis 10 October 2008 (has links)
Excessive phosphorus (P) in runoff contributes to eutrophication of fresh water
bodies. Studies have shown that manure and effluent applied from animal feeding
operations to waste application fields (WAFs) have contributed to excess P in segments
of the North Bosque River in east central Texas. There is a growing need for
environmentally sound, economically viable, and easy to establish best management
practices to control such pollution. Vegetative buffer strips offer a potential solution for
reducing runoff P from WAFs by extracting it from soil and by reducing sediment P
delivery (due to reduced runoff and soil erosion) to streams. In a field study, ten plots
(5m x 5m) were assigned to five replicated treatments, namely control (bare, without
having any plant cover), cool season grass, warm season forb, warm season grass, and
warm season legume to assess their efficacy of runoff sediment control and P
sequestration potential from soil. These plots were established on a coastal Bermuda
grass WAF that received dairy lagoon effluent.
A runoff collection system, a 1m x 1m sub-plot with a runoff conveyance and
collection apparatus, was installed on the upstream and downstream margins of each plot. Natural rainfall runoff samples were collected and analyzed subsequently for total
P, soluble P, and total suspended solids in the laboratory. Additionally, the total mass of
runoff collected from each sub-plot was calculated. Results suggested that the warm
season forb and warm season grass were the most effective vegetative covers for the
reduction of runoff P, followed by coastal Bermuda and cool season grass, respectively.
The lesser amount of runoff total P in these two treatments was due to lesser runoff mass
and lesser sediments in the runoff due to initial interception of rain and less raindrop
impact on soil because of denser vegetative cover in both treatments compared to all
other treatments.

Cultural prorogation in mainland China: a case study of BL cultureWang, Ruoxing, 王若星 January 2013 (has links)
Boys‘love (BL) is originated from the Japanese comics. The phrase ―”boy‘s love” first appeared as a proper noun in the comics at an approximate time of 1966 in Japan. Most BL comics depicted hopeless love of boys. Then, the 1990s saw the emergence of new type of BL comics, namely 耽美 (Tanbi). Tanbi is a Japanese word, it can be attributed the same meaning as aestheticism. Tanbi comics showed a perfect scene to audiences within beautiful boys’ love, pleasure stories also end up with a comedy.
The boys‘ love or nature love between boys is different from the circle of gay. BL is a kind of emotion always can only be seen in literary output due to its strict conditions. BL ought to be explained like this, a beautiful boy is falling love with somebody else, by coincidence, it is a beautiful boy. BL is more like a Platonic love, BL always give a picture of spiritual experiences of boys‘love but fewer sex. In other word, BL is just a kind of comic form.
The researchers in Japanese comics always concentrated on its social influences, characteristics, conditions, etc. There is scarce any research touching on the comic forms. BL comics are a special component of the comics, and this form demonstrates a series of phenomenon in sociology.
With an informal research, BL comics is now turning into a common fashionable comic form among the Asia regions. However, with great exchanges with other areas, there also exists a large number of BL comic fans in Mainland China, and most of them are young ladies. Given this background, BL is treated as an exclusive form to the young ladies, and it largely reflects values and tastes of these ladies. The findings of this thesis might provide insights into a desire understanding males and an expectation of a fathfully lover.
Undeniably, Japanese people attain amazing achievements in many fields, the success of circulating BL products is one of them. To some extent, researching the circulation and consumption patterns of BL comics may reveal the great achievement of Japan in culture transmission. / published_or_final_version / Modern Languages and Cultures / Master / Master of Philosophy

Feasibility Of Left Side Rumble Strips On Rural Arterial Freeways In New BunswickMulkern, Matthew 01 May 2012 (has links)
This study evaluated the feasibility of adding rumble strips
to the left side of rural freeways in New Brunswick. A
review of 940 collisions that occurred on Route 2 and Route
95 was supplemented with an analysis of 547 incidents that
occurred on the Brun-Way owned and operated sections of
Route 2 and Route 95.
The study revealed that despite significantly more traffic
travelling in the right lane, a larger number of ROR crashes
occurred to the left side. Four Crash Modification Factors
(CMF’s) ranging from 0.87 to 0.96 were developed in order to
estimate the potential benefit of left side rumble strip installation. A left side specific CMF of 0.95 was developed for all crashes and a CMF of 0.93 was developed for Fatal
and Injury (FI) crashes. A benefit-cost analysis revealed that the B/C ratio of the installation of left side rumble strips ranged from 7.9 to 9.4.
