This research into the properties of a 5"x5"x16lb W.F., A 36 Steel, rolled structural member was undertaken to determine the following: i - Yield stress distribution over the cross section of the member as determined by coupon tests. ii - Development of strain over the cross section of the member, as measured by electric strain gauges, when subjected to a) Axial loading, b) Bending Moment. iii - The effect of previous loading of a member as a column into the region of yielding on its subsequent behaviour as a beam loaded to failure. The following results were obtained: i - Yield stress, particularly the upper yield stress was not uniform over the cross section. ii - The strain distribution in the plastic range was not uniform and varied from cross section to cross section and even at closely adjacent points on the same cross section. iii - Failure of the member, due to inadequate lateral support when loaded as a column, occurred before complete yielding was achieved. Structural Analysis and Testing of a Carbon-Composite Wing using Fiber Bragg Gratings

The objective of this study was to determine the deflected wing shape and the out-of-plane loads of a large-scale carbon-composite wing of an ultralight aerial vehicle using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. The composite wing was instrumented with an optical fiber on its top and bottom surfaces positioned over the main spar, resulting in approximately 780 strain sensors bonded to the wings. The strain data from the FBGs was compared to that obtained from four conventional strain gages, and was used to obtain the out-of-plane loads as well as the wing shape at various load levels using NASA-developed real-time load and displacement algorithms. The composite wing measured 5.5 meters and was fabricated from laminated carbon uniaxial and biaxial prepreg fabric with varying laminate ply patterns and wall thickness dimensions. A three-tier whiffletree system was used to load the wing in a manner consistent with an inlight loading condition.

A cyclic polarization procedure was designed to evaluate the pitting potentials of high performance stainless steels in synthetic concrete pore water at different chloride concentrations. Cyclic polarization scans were performed on high performance stainless steel reinforcements, S32201, S32305 and S32205. Pitting initiation was observed below the oxygen evolution potential for high chloride concentrations. S32201 and S32304 showed the presence of metastable pitting before reaching its pitting potential. Pitting resistance performance, based on cyclic polarization, was consistent with each material's respective Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) value. Blast/explosion resistant analysis of composite steel girder bridge system

The design of bridge structures to resist explosive loads has become more of a concern to the engineering community. This thesis proposes a method to evaluate the effects of conventional blast loads on a two span continuous composite steel girder bridge system. The bridge design is based on AASHTO LRFD method. Resistance capacities of bridge deck and composite steel girder are calculated according to AASHTO specifications. Equivalent blast pressures on the bridge components are obtained. Response and performance of concrete deck, steel girders, and supporting piers are evaluated under typical blast loads. The blast induced force in the bridge components are computed in the static analyses for varying amounts of TNT. The blast effects in the supporting pier are determined using both static and dynamic analyses.
