Student Services in Bible Colleges and Universities Accredited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (AABC)

This study attempted to determine the types, extent, and quality of student personnel services in colleges and universities accredited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (AABC). The Basic Services Questionnaire (BSQ) was adapted for use among Bible colleges and universities and mailed to chief student affairs officers representing 69 Bible colleges in the United States accredited by the AABC. Of the 71 surveys mailed (two institutions employed both a Dean of Men and Dean of Women), 46 were returned for a response rate of 65 percent. Chi-square tests of goodness-of-fit were performed on the data in order to categorize the types, extent, and quality of student services provided by the institutions. The Mueller-Schuessler Index of Qualitative Variation was used to determine the homogeneity, or heterogeneity, of the chief student affairs officers when grouped according to specific variables (gender, ethnic origin, major for highest degree earned, and highest degree earned). Frequency counts and percentage distributions were used on demographic data to present a profile of chief student services administrators at AABC schools. The results of the study point to four conclusions. First, the types of student personnel services provided by American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC closely match those offered by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as essential to student services divisions within colleges or universities. Second, the extent of the student personnel services provided by American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC was average to broad. Student services such as student development and financial aid were rated as broad to very broad. Third, quality of student personnel services at AABC institutions was fair to good. Financial aid services and student activities were rated as very good. Fourth, the chief student affairs officers at American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC were homogeneous in regard to gender, ethnicity, and education.

Racial identity development and leadership development among Asian American students in ethnic-identity based organizations : a case study

This thesis explored how involvement in Asian ethnic-identity based organizations affected stud~nts' racial identity development and leadership development. There were five Asian ethnic-identity based organizations in this study; each organization served as a case and together created a collective case study. Participants for this study were the Asian American students in the five organizations. The conceptual framework included Input- Environment Outcome model, Student Involvement theory, Asian American Identity Development model, and Leadership Identity Development model. Involvement in Asian ethnic-identity based organizations contributed to a more positive perception of one's racial/ethnic identity. Students had greater cultural exploration and commitment to their ethnic identity. Involvement positively contributed to development of leadership identity specifically greater leadership self-efficacy and the ability to collaborate. The study provided insights into how the practice of leadership was affected by organizational structure and membership level. Ethnic-identity based organizations were the venues where students found an inclusive, supportive and encouraging community that fostered racial identity development. Eventually, these students assumed leadership responsibilities to spread cultural awareness and developed other student leaders to sustain their community. Discussed were the implications for practice and future research.

The Wicked Decision Maker: A Collective Case Study of Senior Student Affairs Officers Responding to At-risk Student Retention

The purpose of this collective case study was to discover the decision-making processes used by senior student affairs officers when making wicked decisions related to the retention of specialized, at-risk student populations. Wicked decisions are complex, resistant to resolutions, lead to other problems, and are essentially unique. In this study, decisions related to retention of Black males; students with mental health issues; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer student retention fall within the wicked problem category and were the focus of this study. These decisions are usually the responsibility of divisions of student affairs in higher education settings and the senior student affairs officer. Hence, the senior student affairs officer is tasked with making responsible and effective decisions that foster the success of all students. An investigation of the effective supervision and communication competence of chief student affairs officers in Christian institutions of higher education.

The purpose of this study was to examine if there is an association between effective supervision and communication competence in divisions of student affairs at Christian higher education institutions. The investigation examined chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) and their direct reports at 45 institutions across the United States using the Synergistic Supervision Scale and the Communication Competence Questionnaire. A positive significant association was found between the direct report's evaluation of the CSAO's level of synergistic supervision and the direct report's evaluation of the CSAO's level of communication competence. The findings of this study will advance the supervision and communication competence literature while informing practice for student affairs professionals. This study provides a foundation of research in the context specific field of student affairs where there has been a dearth of literature regarding effective supervision. This study can be used as a platform for future research to further the understanding of characteristics that define effective supervision.
