Knowledge of and attitudes to sexually transmitted diseases among Thai university students

Svensson, Linn, Waern, Sara January 2013 (has links)
Sexually transmitted diseases are a major problem among adolescents in Thailand, and seeing that unprotected sex is a growing trend, awareness must be increased. The aim of this study was to examine Thai students’ knowledge of and attitudes to STDs as well as if there are any differences in gender regarding these questions. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at a private university in Bangkok, Thailand. The Health Belief Model was provided as theoretical framework. A questionnaire was answered voluntarily by 150 students, both male and female. The results showed that the students had low level of knowledge on STDs and their attitudes showed that they have many misconceptions regarding these issues. The study also showed that Thai students want to learn more about STDs and wish to receive this information from school. No major difference in gender was found. This study shows that additional education on STDs is needed among Thai adolescents. Further research in this area is acquired to get a wider perspective of Thai students’ knowledge on STDs, to help prevent future spreading of STDs.

Návrh a otestování výukových materiálů k terénní exkurzi do oblasti Brd. / Design and testing of students'materials for a field trip to Brdy area

Přibylová, Anna January 2014 (has links)
The reason why I chose this topic is that field trips (short-term or long-term) have demonstrable effect on students' knowledge, values and attitudes as well as teachers' skills. The objective of this thesis was to prepare a field trip including all needed teaching materials and evaluate it's effect on students' knowledge. Created teaching materials were tested in four classes in two primary school in Příbram and a nearby village. Students from these schools were divided into two groups - experimental and control. The experimental group attended the field trip and the control group got involved in the same program but at school. Both groups completed pretest, teaching, posttest 1 (with a feedback about teaching), posttest 2 and 3. Data collected from this research were evaluated using statistical methods. The results from these methods proved a significant difference of knowledge between groups in posttest 1 and 2. The score of both groups gained in posttest 3 was similar. We can conclude that students of both groups learned new information and their knowledge improved. Nevertheless the field trip had significantly higher effect on students' knowledge than the school lesson. Key words: teaching methods, field trip, students' knowledge, knowledge testing

Testování vlivu nově vytvořených učebních materiálů k fluorescenčnímu mikroskopu na znalosti žáků / Testing the influence of newly created learning materials for the fluorescent microscope on students` knowledge

Filipová, Jana January 2013 (has links)
Among students, interest in Science is decreasing, despite the fact that knowledge of Science can be useful in many real life situations, such as medicine, conservation etc. Science education can also simply help to form a positive attitude towards nature. There are many possibilities of increasing students' interest in Science that could increase their motivation to study. Apart from Inquiry Based Education or Prescribed Practical Activities, working with devices used in research practice is one of the possibilities. If a school doesn't own such devices, there is a possibility to borrow them, or to work with them via the Internet. Possibilities of remote access to these devices are subject to research abroad, and this trend is also starting to appear in the Czech Republic. One example of a device that can be borrowed by schools is a fluorescence microscope at the Department of Didactics and Education of Biology, Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague. In my thesis, I was investigating the influence of the presence or absence of this fluorescence microscope on the knowledge of students. Research was carried out in four different classes at two secondary schools in Prague. Students who took part in this research were from the first year of a four year secondary school or from the third...

Silva, Daniela Rodrigues da January 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims at analyzing how high school first-year students build knowledge by taking part in activities organized as a teaching and learning proposal, designed on the basis of key assumptions to the study of chemical transformations. The study is organized in four chapters, in which three case studies, as well as a computer-mediated educational object designed to the study of chemical transformations are presented. The first chapter seeks to understand a) how nineteen teachers in different levels and teaching modalities view what is needed for students to learn chemistry; b) how they view creativity in this process; c) the characteristics of their lesson plans and d) the difficulties faced throughout practical implementation in chemistry classes. In the second chapter, storytelling and problem solving in pencil and paper are used to analyze the implicit theories that seventeen first-year students in a high school technical course at a public school in Canoas – Rio Grande do Sul have about situations involving chemical transformations. From the results obtained in these two case studies, a Teaching and Learning Proposal (PEA) was elaborated based on concepts, approaches and strategies developed by Pozo (2008), Pozo and Gómez Crespo (2009), Johnstone (2000) and Pozo and Echeverría (1998). This proposal guided the development of the third case study, performed with high school first-year students at a public school in Porto Alegre – Rio Grande do Sul. Content analysis (BARDIN, 2009) was used to process the results obtained in the three case studies. The PensaQui, a computer-mediated educational object based on the same assumptions of the PEA was established as a tool for teachers to access students’ notions about chemical transformations and, at the same time, propose the study of key concepts related to the topic. In this context, it is argued the thesis that to be able to understand such concepts students should be aware of the differences between their implicit theories – structured mainly on the macroscopic level – and scientific theories based on abstract models – symbolic and submicroscopic level –, so that the conceptual change resulting from new forms of understanding the same phenomenon can facilitate the restructuring and integration of knowledge. The arguments presented in this study support the idea that, early in high school, teachers should create conditions for their students to represent matter as something discontinuous by using the corpuscular kinetic model of matter and the conservation of unobservable properties as assumptions to interpret the situations studied.

Evaluating a new transformative culturally competent pediatric dental training among predoctoral students

Zuhairy, Reem Akram 26 July 2022 (has links)
Few general dentists feel comfortable treating very young children 0-5-years old due to inadequate training and exposure. Over the past few years, there is an increasing demand on providers to be culturally competent and meet the health needs of the culturally diverse population. OBJECTIVE: Assess the gained knowledge, perception and confidence in providing clinical dental care to vulnerable populations, pregnant adolescents and to very young children 0-5-years old following the enhancement of the predoctoral pediatric dental curriculum and training which was aimed to prepare future practitioners to be culturally competent in providing pediatric dental care to the current culturally diverse population. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis conducted among the predoctoral students including the Doctor of Dental Medicine-(DMD) and Advanced Standing-(AS) who underwent pediatric dental training between 2017-2022 at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. Predoctoral students participated in the pre/post training surveys of the implemented didactic training program in cultural competency and oral health literacy lectures. The students completed questionnaires on their knowledge and confidence level on treating children 0-5-years old following the novel simulation scenario discussion after the Haptic simulator training and following clinical training in the pediatric dental clinic. Descriptive statistics were calculated, univariate and multivariate analysis were used to analyze the differences in the level of knowledge gained by program type, year of training and demographic characteristics such as age and gender. Statistical significance was set at p-value<0.05. RESULTS: The cultural competency training improved the students’ knowledge and perception. DMD-students performed better to have a higher level of knowledge in the post training survey compared to AS-students (OR=4.724;p<0.001). Based on the post training questionnaires, the haptic simulator session and novel simulation scenarios increased the students’ knowledge and confidence to treat pediatric patients. Student’s confidence to treat children 0-5-years and pregnant adolescents improved after completing the trainings. CONCLUSION: The new enhanced training program increased the predoctoral students’ knowledge and confidence to treat children 0-5-years. This can be beneficial when used in dental departments to support predoctoral graduates to be culturally competent who can be better prepared to manage the diverse population.
