護理課程如何影響護士學生建立專業身份: The impact of a nursing program on the formation of nursing students' professional identity. / Impact of a nursing program on the formation of nursing students' professional identity / Hu li ke shui ru he ying xiang hu shi xue sheng jian li zhuan ye shen fen: The impact of a nursing program on the formation of nursing students' professional identity.

The formation of nursing professional identity links the individual with the nursing profession. In this process the individual strives to maintain a balance between her professional role and her self-identity. It is a process of developing professional knowledge, skills, value and self-identity. With rapid social changes as well as worldwide development in the nursing profession, Macau’s nursing education is in a situation where strengths and weaknesses co-exist and interact with each other. Such a situation will certainly have significant impact on secondary school graduates’ decision to choose nursing as a future career, nursing students’ pursuit of nursing education as well as the possibility of their contributing to the nursing profession via creative innovation. Owing to the shortage of nurses, whether nursing education is able to help the students establish a concrete professional identity has become a major concern at present. / Being the most long-standing nursing education institution in Macau, Kiang Wu Nursing College established the first four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme in 2002. The philosophy of the programme, named ─From Personhood to Benevolence", is founded on the history and nature of Kiang Wu Charitable Association with the aim of fostering holistic nursing education that centres on care. To enhance the holistic impact of education, Kiang Wu Nursing College adds some new elements to the programme in order to enable students to formulate their professional identity. How did nursing students of Kiang Wu Nursing College form their professional identity in the course of learning, and how effective was the programme in forming students’ sense of professional identity were precisely the two questions that the present study aims at answering. / The researcher selected 20 nursing graduates and 8 nursing educators as participants of the study, which employed a qualitative case study method. In-depth interviews and document reviews were first conducted to collect the required data. After having undergone thorough examination of the collected data as well as detailed analyses and comparisons of various cases, it was found that the sense of professional identity of students of Kiang Wu Nursing College was developed through the following five crucial changes that they had experienced, including shouldering important responsibilities and respecting life, confronting hardship and offering holistic nursing care, leading a life inseparable from nursing and capitalizing on professional competences, developing professional knowledge, and thinking and acting like a nurse, as well as becoming part of the team and carrying forward the nursing spirit. Through summarizing and analyzing the data of the interviewed graduates and teachers, it was discovered that the current bachelor’s degree programme of Kiang Wu Nursing College played an important role in influencing the formation of students’ professional identity. Most students constructed their professional identity by solving people’s health problems and assisting others in developing a healthy lifestyle through their practice in clinical environment and in daily life. In addition to the programme, other aspects including the College’s caring culture, faculty’s role model of effective and appropriate behaviours, connection between the Hospital and the College, as well as students’ personal factors all contribute to the formation of students’ sense of professional identity. / On the basis of the above findings, the present study puts forward some suggestions with regard to nursing education and in the interest of future studies, in order to improve the programme philosophy and programme design for the fostering of students’ sense of professional identity, as well as to optimize the humanistic and environmental attributes for the further enhancement of the quality of nursing education and for the cultivation of nursing professionals who demonstrate civic professionalism. In addition, the study discusses some of the relevant theories and notions, and proposes revisions or solutions for their deficiencies. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 尹一橋. / Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2014. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 331-350). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Yin Yiqiao.

Consciousness-raising tasks for second language grammar instruction: effects on average ability secondarystudents

Chan, Shiu-yip, Simon., 陳肇業. January 2012 (has links)
Within the framework of task-based language teaching, various types of tasks have been proposed, yet in English as foreign language classroom contexts where learners’ exposure to target language input is often limited, the adoption of form-focused tasks seems to receive much credit. Although the potential academic gains brought forth by such tasks have been studied in some previous quantitative research, the call for investigations into those tasks from a learner perspective remains warranted. In this study I investigated the use of grammatical consciousness-raising (C-R) tasks as an inductive approach to grammar pedagogy in an EFL classroom from a learner perspective. While performing such tasks the informants, who were a class of secondary level English as foreign language learners, made discoveries about the targeted grammar items based on contextualized examples provided. In the study I first examined the extent to which adopting C-R tasks impacted on the informants’ learning of English grammar through pretests and posttests. Second, I elicited their perceptions of C-R tasks through a questionnaire and two semi-structured interviews. Third, with the think-aloud protocols method I studied the informants’ engagement with the grammar items presented through either C-R tasks or deductive explanation. The findings revealed that the majority of the informants were able to develop grammatical understanding through performing C-R tasks. They tended to respond positively to and show deep engagement with the grammar items presented though such tasks as well. To enhance the perceived effectiveness of such tasks and thus to maximize the effect of grammar teaching, I concluded by suggesting the need for teachers to make the learners fully aware of the nature of and rationale behind C-R tasks and to investigate whether and how such tasks can be integrated with other methodological options in realizing effective grammar instruction in their own contexts. / published_or_final_version / Education / Doctoral / Doctor of Education

Enhancing academic self-concept and academic achievement of vocationalstudents: a longitudinal intervention studyin mainland China

Yang, Lan, 杨兰 January 2012 (has links)
While much is known about the achievement of high ability students, much less research has focused on their lower ability peers. In addition, although academic self-concept, locus of control and learning approaches have been demonstrated to be important personal variables that influence learning outcomes, less effort has been made to integrate these variables simultaneously to understand the complexity of low-achievement. The present research aimed to not only identify key causes of the low-achievement of academically disadvantaged students, but also provide appropriate and productive enhancement approaches to foster low-achieving students’ school success by conducting a pioneering longitudinal experimental study particularly in mainland China. The participants were low-achieving junior secondary students who had recently enrolled in Secondary Vocational Education (SVE) in mainland China (total N = 724). It was found that compared with normal- and high-achieving students in mainstream secondary education, students in SVE were characterized with less achieving motives, less internal-oriented control beliefs and particularly lower academic self-concepts. In addition, the academic self-concept of SVE students was found to be the most significant predictor of their academic achievement (p< .001) compared with achieving approach (p< .05) and locus of control (p> .05). These findings, in light of the 3P learning model, revealed the likely major role of academic self-concept in affecting academic achievement among adolescent students in SVE. In particular, Study 2, a comparative study, confirmed that vocational students had the lowest English self-concept of the groups studied. Hence, the focus of Study 3 (a longitudinal intervention) was on English self-concept. By incorporating recent advances in Western feedback enhancement approaches and the construct-validity approach to fully explore the intervention effects, Study 3 demonstrated that the researcher-administered treatments (performance feedback and combined feedback) in natural classroom settings successfully enhanced participants’ English self-concept, the targeted facet. Importantly, both the competence and affect components within the English self-concept of targeted students also gained statistically significant improvements from the two feedback treatments, compared with those of students who received no particular treatment. An interesting finding was that the two feedback treatments appeared similarly significant in changing the competence component of English self-concept. However, the internally-focused performance feedback was less effective in changing the affect component of English self-concept compared with the combined feedback. Non-significant transfer effects were found on untargeted facets of academic self-concept among participants receiving only the performance feedback. A slightly significant transfer effect was found on Chinese self-concept (one control facet) among participants receiving the combined feedback, indicating the power of the combined feedback to influence a facet that is closely related to the targeted facet. The present findings provided important cross-cultural empirical evidence to support sound within-network validity of the feedback intervention in a vocational setting. Impressively, the English achievements of students in both experimental classes also gained statistically significant improvements. Based on key research designs of the present intervention, future implications of the two feedback treatments to cultivate positive academic self-beliefs and enhance learning among vocational and non-vocational secondary school students are discussed. / published_or_final_version / Education / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

First year high school students' perception of parental involvement ineducation in a rural area of Heilongjiang province in China

Chen, Jiaxin, 陈佳欣 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research study is to explore first graders’ understanding of parental involvement in a rural high school, to investigate students’ feeling and attitude towards their parents’ participation in high school education, to understand rural students’ expectation of parent-teacher collaboration, and further to examine potential differences caused by gender, degree of parental involvement, and level of academic performance. Qualitative data was collected by means of individual interviews and questionnaires among first-grade students in a rural high school in Heilongjiang Province. The research involves 12 interview participants and 115 students for questionnaires. After transcribing verbally all the individual interviews, both line-by-line coding and software N-Vivo were utilized to analyze transcriptions in order to generate main codes and themes to describe students’ understanding and perception and further explore differences across individual interview participants. Questionnaire data was entered into Excel program to create figures supporting findings of interviews. Findings show that rural high school students understand parental involvement as interactions involving parents, teachers and students in four aspects- material, supportive, communicative and environmental. Effective communication, initiation of providing supports, good relationship, and comfortable environment were highlighted in students’ expectations. Secondly, the feelings of confident, proud, warm, happy, relax, pressure, and distrust were related by students to their parents’ various practices of involvement in high school education. Moreover, students identified three different attitudes towards parental involvement: positive, negative, and dependent. It was found that students’ attitude towards the communicative parental involvement was highly depended on the content and the frequency. Besides, students tend to express their neutral attitude towards activities that were not implemented in the high school such as participation in school decision making and parent-teacher association. Thirdly, academic scores and motivation of study were discovered to be affected by parents’ involvement. Parent involvement with positive feeling and positive attitude were more likely to be related to positive effects on academic outcomes by students. The research suggests a three-way communication among parents, teachers and students at school and in the community. Findings imply that it is necessary for rural high schools and rural parents to work together with students in the establishment of home-school cooperation. Students’ reaction and expectation provide valuable implications for practices of parental involvement in rural high school. Individual differences are also recommended to be taken into considerations in the practices. / published_or_final_version / Education / Master / Master of Education

Mainland Chinese research postgraduate students' attitudes to using English in an English-medium university in Hong Kong

Yang, Jing, 杨静 January 2012 (has links)
This study explored a group of mainland Chinese research postgraduate students’ attitudes to using English in their current academic and daily lives in Hong Kong. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. An interview survey with seven participants was carried out to seek in-depth information about participants’ perceptions of using English in Hong Kong. Based on the major themes found in the preliminary analysis of the interview survey, an online questionnaire survey was designed and sent out to investigate a much larger group of mainland research students' English language use experiences in Hong Kong. The results revealed that this group of students generally had positive attitudes to using English in their academic lives in Hong Kong while had relatively negative attitudes to their experiences of daily English language use. Their perceptions of the English of different groups of people in Hong Kong were varied although they all opined that English was an important language in the educational, commercial and other formal settings in Hong Kong. The pedagogical implications for mainland research students, their academic supervisors and university language policy makers are discussed and future research directions are suggested. / published_or_final_version / Applied English Studies / Master / Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics
