A study of the adequacy of library materials in the area of personal and social development available for teaching social studies in Florida elementary schools

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study is to compile a graded, annotated list of library materials in the area of personal and social development (1) which meet established criteria for selection of children's materials and (2) which can be recommended to teachers of elementary social studies in the State of Florida. In connection with the development of this list, an analysis has been made of materials available for evaluation. This analysis was made to determine the adequacy of library materials related to each continuing strand in Area I of the social studies program and to discover where production of additional materials is badly needed. Only the materials listed in current selection aids were considered for inclusion in the bibliography of library materials developed through this study"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "January, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Sara Krentzman Srygley, Professor Directing Study. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 152-156).

The role of the principal in fostering the practice of democratic values in primary school.

King, Gregory January 2005 (has links)
This study attempted to determine the principal's role in fostering democratic values in schools, which will enable learners to participate meaningfully in society / as well as to suggest attainable recommendations to empower school principals to form or maintain democratically run learning organizations. International and local research has shown that it is widely accepted that schools are important training grounds for democratic practices, because schooling is the largest and most important collective enterprise undertaken in modern societies. It therefore has the potential to have greater influence on values, skills and work habits than any other public institution.

Investigating Student Understanding of the Law of Conservation of Matter

Tremel, Shirley Lynn 01 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gather information about how students learn the foundational concept of conservation of matter during a non-chemistry unit on the rock cycle. The unit covered the rock cycle, rock types, and the law of conservation of matter and took place in a sixth grade classroom of 30 students. A mixed methods, quasi-experimental, pre-post, delayed post design was used to measure student understanding of the concept of conservation of matter as it relates to the rock cycle. Students made significant learning gains from pre-test to post-test and showed mastery in less complex subject areas, but struggled to learn the more complex concept of conservation of matter. More research is needed in order to gain a greater understanding of how students learn difficult foundational concepts such as conservation of matter, and how they are able to apply their understanding across disciplines in science. This study offers suggestions for future work including a series of questions to assess student misconceptions about matter, and how to use those questions to measure students' ability to transfer knowledge to different learning contexts. The recommended questions ask students to transfer knowledge from the conservation of matter as it applies to the rock cycle to chemistry concepts including conservation of matter, mass and volume.

Sharing the land : a 5th and 6th grade curricular unit for Minto-Brown Island Park, Salem, Oregon

Hanson, Mette J. 27 May 1993 (has links)
The lack of first-hand experience or knowledge about farming in the general population of the United States is a concern among scientists as many current environmental issues are strongly linked to agriculture. Developing agricultural literacy and an appreciation for our dependance on limited resources is important for preparing future generations to make informed decisions on environmental and sustainability issues. Support for incorporating agriculture into the science curriculum at the pre-college level comes from a variety of sources including The National Research Council, education administrators, cooperative extension directors and college professors. Minto-Brown is a multi-use city park in Salem, OR including a wildlife refuge and 240 acres of farm fields. This curricular unit is part of an education program at Minto-Brown, developed in response to recent controversy over pesticide use in the park. The unit, "Sharing the Land!" is designed for grade levels 5 and 6. It addresses issues on sustainability in agriculture and interactions between agriculture, wildlife and recreationists. Problem solving skills are emphasized in the various activities. Library research and personal interviews provided technical information for the unit and classroom observation and testing were used in designing activities. Materials for the unit, (a teaching kit) can be checked out from the Community Education Office, 2575 Commercial St SE, 97302. / Graduation date: 1994
